Edward James (1907-1984) was a notable patron of the arts<br />
who, in order to preserve his family estate at West Dean House<br />
in Sussex, established the Edward James Foundation, a centre<br />
for the preservation of traditional arts <strong>and</strong> crafts. He is buried<br />
amidst the Arboretum he established.<br />

Freeth, a Political ballad writer <strong>and</strong> propriotor of ‘Freeth’s<br />
Coffee House’, wrote under the pen name John Free. ‘Britain’s<br />
Glory’ was to become his most famous song whilst “The Political<br />
Songster” (1790) was his most substantial collection.<br />

awarded to “Mme Briffaut-Mailliez – Sage-Femme”,<br />
bust of Jenner on plinth, rev inscription, 41mm;<br />

Jenner, the pioneer of the smallpox vaccine, studied his natural<br />
surroundings in Berkeley, Gloucestershire, where he was born.<br />

School, Silver, for First in Chemistry, 1882-1883, <strong>and</strong><br />
First in Physiology, 1884, by B Wyon, awarded to C<br />
F M Althorp (died 1918), bust of Hunter right, rev<br />
named within wreath, 51mm, 64.03g <strong>and</strong> 64.90g,<br />
in Wyon cases of issue (one slightly damaged).<br />

Charles Frederick M Althorp, MB Lond, was later Senior<br />
Surgeon to the Bradford Royal Infirmary. He served as a medical<br />
officer to the “Bradford Pals” Battalion during their training in<br />
Bradford. A copy of his obituary is sold with the lot.
