31mm. All toned <strong>and</strong> extremely fine. (3) £150-250<br />
275 Ships of the Modern Navy, a series of Silver <strong>and</strong><br />
Silvered-bronze <strong>Medals</strong> (30), some with enameled<br />
decoration, including the RN Garibaldi, 1900, 23mm;<br />
the Orsa class, 40mm; Submarine Leonardo da Vinci,<br />
many with ship portraits, all but first around <strong>World</strong><br />
War II period or later, most 25mm. Very fine <strong>and</strong><br />
better <strong>and</strong> an interesting group. (30) £200-250<br />
RN Garibaldi (built Genoa), sunk the Turkish Avnilla <strong>and</strong> several<br />
gunboats at Beirut during the Italo-Turkish War of 1911-1912.<br />
The Orsa class were a group of large torpedo boats or destroyer<br />
escorts built in the late 1930s. The Submarine Leonardo da Vinci,<br />
sunk May 1943, had been the top scoring non-German submarine<br />
of the all war.<br />
Papal <strong>Medals</strong><br />
276 Pius II, Piccolomini (1458-1464), Bronze Medal, bust<br />
left, rev VELOCITER SCRIBENTIS SOBOLES, a table<br />
covered with books, 44mm (Linc 351). Extremely<br />
fine, all examples were posthumously struck, this medal<br />
shows the faint dies cracks. £40-60<br />
277 Hadrian VI (1522-1523), Coronation, restrike Bronze<br />
Medal from original 16 th century dies, bust left, rev<br />
scene of the coronation (Linc 453). About extremely<br />
fine, almost certainly early 18 th century. £50-70<br />
278 Julius III (1550-1555), Restoration of Catholicism in<br />
Engl<strong>and</strong> 1555, Bronze Medal, by Cavino, bust right,<br />
rev ANGLIA RESVRGES, the Pope raising Engl<strong>and</strong>,<br />
with him Queen Mary, Cardinal Pole, Emperor<br />
Charles V <strong>and</strong> Philip II of Spain, Mary’s husb<strong>and</strong>,<br />
49mm (Linc 553-5; MI i 70/15). A later strike, good<br />
extremely fine. £150-200<br />
279 Pius V, Ghislieri (1566-1572), the Battle of Lepanto<br />
1571, Bronze Medal, by Giovanni Antonio de Rossi,<br />
half figure bust right, rev A DOMINO FACTVM EST<br />
ISTVD 1571, view of the naval battle, 42mm (Modesti<br />
620). A crisp strike, small die crack suggesting it is<br />
slightly later, extremely fine <strong>and</strong> rare. £100-150<br />
On 7 October 1571 an alliance of Catholic navies led by John of<br />
Austria defeated the Ottoman fleet off Lepanto, in the Gulf of<br />
Patras. The victory halted the Ottoman Empire’s efforts to secure<br />
free access to the Mediterranean <strong>and</strong> was decisive in protecting<br />
Italy <strong>and</strong> Western Europe from total Ottoman invasion.
