A Special Congregational Meeting Will Be 

Held On October 10 th At 9:00 am! 

A special meeting for the Trinity Lutheran Congregation has 

been set by the Church Council for Sunday, October 10 th , at 9:00 

am in the Church Sanctuary, for the purpose of receiving a proposal 

and resolution from the Committee that has been examining 

our church organ. 

The Organ Study Committee is preparing a brief Power Point 

Presentation to share information. Time will be allowed for discussion 

and questions to be answered. Authorization will be 

sought to engage upon fund raising within the congregation. A 

paper ballot vote will be taken upon the proposals. 

October 17 th . . . A Time To Celebrate 

We will have the opportunity to celebrate and thank Audrey Hanson 

for her many years as Church Secretary, Receptionist, and 

Office Manager on Sunday, October 17 th at 9:00 am. We invite 

you to the Gustafson Room to share in expressing our gratitude 

to Audrey for her many, many years of ministry among us.

2010 Strategic Planning Study: Executive Summary 

(a more manageable 5 page report). The 

church council received the recommendations 

along with specific advice about implementation 

and then proceeded to do some preliminary 

prioritizing. The major sections of the report 

are: Visionary Leadership; Identity, Values, 

Mission & Vision; Discipleship; Looking Outward 

- Welcoming In; Church Communications 

and Marketing; Staff and Management; Church 

Facility and Related Needs, and Financial Resource 

Needs. An Ad Hoc Vision and Mission 

Team will be appointed by the Council and will 

be charged and equipped to re-write vision and 

mission statements reflective of congregational 

values and unique strengths and position. The 

Council also identified areas in which we could 

begin to do immediate work. The congregation 

will be involved and consulted in many of these 

processes. This is an exciting moment as we 

look to our future led by the Spirit and empowered 

to serve & share our faith in Christ Jesus.

CORNER 

Spiritual, Not Religious? 

By Pastor C. 

I need help. I need someone to help me understand 

what it means to be “spiritual” but not 

religious. This is a growing phenomenon as 

we pastors all know: persons describing themselves 

as “spiritual” but not “religious.” It 

means of course, that these folks likely will not 

choose to affiliate with a congregation, that 

they are not interested in “organized religion” 

(in my experience, ‘organized religion’ 

may well be an oxymoron). Their ”spiritual” 

inclinations do not lead them to a church, a 

synagogue, or a mosque. 

What are these religions if they are not bearers, 

protectors, and carriers of “spirituality?” 

Were they to die, surely “spirituality” would 

slowly suffocate too. 

I wonder if it is not just the messy, sometimes 

gory business of living together in congregational 

life that frightens some away. Are these 

Faith-4-Life 

We need parent volunteers to host & help carry 

out social events for 5 th and 6 th Graders in a 

safe Christian environment with FUN being the 

top priority! Usually held a couple times a 

month on either Sundays or Wednesdays. 

Some things they’ve done in the past are: 

bowling, bon-fire at one of the parent’s home, 

hay-rides, caroling, games at the church. The 

kids LOVE it, but without parent volunteers, 

nothing can happen. Sign-up on the parent 

message board and Lori Hanson will contact 

you to discuss how you can get involved &/or 

help you organize your event. Or call Lori at 

931-2574 with any questions.

Roger and Corinne Brenke celebrated their 

40th Wedding Anniversary last month on September 

5 th . We wish you many more blessed 

years together! 

folks disappointed that congregational life is 

that the fully human side of those who live in not as pristine or rarified 

as they expect? Is it and sometimes lead congregations is 

disappointing: clergy who divorce or sexually abuse, congregations 

who advocate a partisan political view, congregations in 

which there remains a degree of sexism, racism, and judgmentalism? 

Of course, congregations expect, need, and will ask for a 

proportion of financial support! Yes, the church is a fully human 

gathering – a hospital for sinners and not a showcase for saints. 

What does it mean to be “spiritual” without religion? Is it just a 

matter of being “awed” at nature, literature, music, great art, the 

ever expanding cosmos? Is it finding God within one’s self? Is it 

being a moral person? All these motifs are promoted by -- religion. 

Is it the pervasive influence of the pre-eminent cultural code: individualism? 

Is it a privatized experience accountable to no one 

else? It is a rejection of any churchly authority? Religions are 

anchored in “belonging.” Is it a wholesale rejection of community? 

Someone who described themselves as “spiritual” recently told me 

he was “dabbling” in Buddhism, Taoism, and mystical Judaism – 

all rooted in religion. Well, then, was he part of a gathering, in 

conversation with like-minded seekers, supporting their efforts with 

his financial contributions? No. Someone help me to understand, 

please. 

If you are seeking the “spiritual,” my experience is that the local 

congregation, as messy as it is, is the most likely, not the least 

likely, place to find it. And if you cannot find it there, the great, 

deep stream of the tradition of that place can guide you into practices 

that will enable. Spiritual but not religious? – I just don’t get 

it?

and taken home by their rightful owners! Any "extras" will be 

donated to the Thrift Store in a few weeks. Thanks so much

The Sunday School Scoop 

Oct. 3rd - World Hunger Day 

To support this event, teachers are going to present a special 

lesson to the students and we ask the children to bring in an item 

of food as their offering. The food and money collected will be 

donated to the SPEC Food Shelf. We’ll need a few parent volunteers 

to hang out with your child until the end of music time to 

help carry the food to the Food Shelf. 

Oct. 24th - MEA Weekend 

No Sunday School or Grapple. Fun event for the whole family 

during education hour - TBD 

A Calendar for the remaining of the year can be found in the

Junior High Synod Youth Gathering 

in Willmar Nov. 20-21 – “Are You Hungry?” 

This annual youth gathering for 7 th – 9 th Graders is an absolute 

favorite! The theme this year is Are You Hungry? The speaker 

and band is AGAPE! Cost is $75.00 (includes transportation, 

lodging, breakfast, a t-shirt AND A FREE TICKET TO THE OCT. 

17 th AGAPE CONCERT IN ST PETER!). Please fill out a registration

on the Youth Table in the Narthex. We are also looking for adults

A MILESTONE EVENT FOR NEW DRIVERS!

This Milestone event is for all 10 th graders and their parents! 

We’ll be celebrating the Milestone of getting your drivers license 

and talking about the privileges of this new responsibility. We 

believe that being able to drive is a matter of STEWARDSHIP. 

We will be playing a few games, enjoying snacks, and offer a 

driving covenant for parents and their child to sign at the end of 

the evening. Plus, we want to honor our new drivers with a special

at Trinity from 7:30-9:00pm. This is a new time for this year, so that 

we can join in the Confirmation’s worship from 7:30-8 and then 

have an hour for our activities and fun! We understand that your 

schedules are busy and that sometimes you have tons of homework, 

but come when you can! Hey, here’s a great idea: come 

early for dinner, work on homework in the youth room and you 

won’t have to tackle your AP classes on your own. BRING YOUR

7 th Grade Confirmands! 

To “matriculate” means: “to enroll as a member of a body, most 

often a college or university.” This year we welcomed 16 7 th grade 

students into our confirmation ministry, along with three adult 

guides and two junior guides. They were officially recognized at a 

special worship service on Sunday, September 19 th , at the 9:30 

a.m. worship service. These young people will celebrate their confirmation 

milestone after three years of preparation in May of 2013.

Fall Gathering in Winthrop 

The Minnesota Valley Conference Fall Gathering is scheduled 

for Saturday, October 16 th , at Peace Lutheran Church in 

Winthrop. The theme for the day is “Come and See—Go 

and Tell.” 

The highlight for the day will be the presentation and entertainment 

by the Kingery Family. This family consists of 

parents and eight children who play and sing traditional 

hymns, classical and folk fiddle. You won’t want to miss it! 

Breakout sessions will be held for officers and those taking 

information back to their churches. Registration and coffee 

begins at 8:30 a.m. The cost is $7.00 including lunch. We 

will plan to car pool from Trinity. Please sign up on the 

women’s bulletin board in the hall off the narthex. Come 

join us for a special day.

Quilt Auction Thanks 

Trinity Women have received thanks from 

Green Lake Bible Camp for the items contributed 

to their annual quilt auction. The quilt 

“Pine Valley” sewn and stitched by our women 

sold for $300. The crocheted squares given by 

Kathleen Hamrum and crocheted together by 

Harriet Rydeen to make a spread sold for $450. 

Many thanks to all who helped with these projects. 

Please look at the women’s bulletin board for 

the listing of the top selling quilts and viewer’s 

choice awards. The highest selling quilt went 

for $3,600!!

Martha Bible Study Circle Meeting 

at Realife 

On Friday, October 1st at 1:30 pm, the Martha Circle 

will be meeting at Realife. Ann Maland is the 

hostess. 

Health Kits 

The need for Health Kits is still critical! We ask you to help us collect 

more items for the kits which will be taken to the Women’s Fall 

Gathering on October 16 th . 

Trinity members contributed 174 complete kits which were brought 

to our SWMN Synodical Convention in June. A total of 4,379 

Health Kits were sent to LWR following the Convention. The need 

continues to be so great that our Conference decided to extend 

our campaign. 

Can you help Trinity send 25 more kits? 

Needed are: 

• Dark colored hand towels 

• 4 to 5 oz. bath size soap in wrapping 

• Adult size toothbrush in packaging 

• Sturdy combs 

• Metal nail files or clippers with file attached

PRAY-ERS NEEDED! 

Yes, you read that right! The Trinity Prayer Chain is looking for 

pray-ers, - that is, people who are able to take a few minutes several 

times a week to pray for specific prayer requests. The requests 

are usually prayers for people who are sick or troubled, for 

Trinity members or friends or relatives. The requests may also 

include prayers for special congregational programs or needs, 

and for thanksgiving and praise to God. 

This group began functioning nearly 21 years ago in the form of 

several telephone chains. The first person on each chain receives 

a call with the requests, jots them down, and in turn, contacts 

the next person on the chain, and so on until everyone available 

has been reached. 

In order to expand the prayer chain and make it possible for more 

people to participate, an e-mail prayer chain was added in 2005. 

The prayer requests are typed up and e-mailed directly to each 

participant, at home or at work. The only response needed is to 

take a few minutes’ time to pray for each request. 

In either case, your responsibility as a member of the Prayer 

Chain will be to pray for the requests you have received. And as 

a result, you will be blessed……………………………………...� 

“Amazing Grays” Meeting October 14 th 

The “Amazing Grays” will be gathering at 1:30 pm on Thursday, 

October 14 th . They will start with devotions, then play some 

games, and dessert being served about 3:00 pm. All are invited 

and welcomed to join in the fun . . . if you’re 55 and over. 

We’re Giving You A Night Off From 

Cooking! Every Wednesday! 

Take a break from the kitchen and let us do the cooking for 

you! Join us on Wednesday evenings for our Fellowship 

Suppers. We serve each Wednesday from 5:15-6:15 p.m. in 

the Gustafson Fellowship Hall. Come and share some fine 

food with family and friends. 

Fellowship suppers are not a fund-raiser, but an opportunity 

to gather with others during the week over a meal – our goal 

is to break even while providing good food to great people. 

Cost for the Fellowship Supper is $4/person, maximum of 

$12/family.

Adult Ed Scheduled For October 

Oct 3 The presenter is Leah Gardner, repre- 

senting Minnesota Council of Nonprofits. 

The presentation is on the topic of 

“Disproportionate Impacts of Climate 

Change Upon the Poor.” 

Oct 10 A discussion will led by Jim Dontje about 

how we live out a commitment to care 

for God’s creation with our daily lives. Is 

it all about light bulbs and leaving our 

cars behind, or is the call to be a good

All Trinity members share in food preparation and serving duties 

for funerals and other church events throughout the year. The 

membership has been divided into 13 groups with designated 

coordinators for each month. This allows one group to have a 

month off each year. Groups move up one month each year as 

well, so that you are not serving in the same month each year. 

This list is also used to secure ushers. When your assistance is 

needed, a coordinator will contact you.
