Trinity Receives Major Gift
We are delighted to announce that Trinity is the recipient of a “gift
annuity” in the amount of just over $103,000 from Hildur Swenson.
Hildur died at her home on February 16th , 2011. Her memorial service
was celebrated on March 26th . She was the oldest member of
Trinity, age 103, and maintained her independence and clarity of
mind to the end of her life. Hildur was a graduate of Gustavus and
committed to the life and growth of the college. She taught English
and Latin at various schools in Minnesota and taught Latin in St. Peter
for the last 15 years of her teaching career. Her accomplishments
and activities are too numerous to mention. Priority number
one in her life was her faith, her Savior, Lord, and congregation
where she used her gifts of the Spirit putting them to action in love
for the sake of God’s Kingdom. Over the years, Hildur was exceedingly
generous with her financial giving to Trinity – a calling and gift
she carried out in her last will and testament.
We remember her with joy and delight and give thanks for Hildur’s
life and compelling witness among us. Indeed, Thanks be to God!
We are aware, as well, of an additional $15,000 bequest upon the
sale of her home and personal property.
These “major gifts” will be distributed according to the Major Gifts
Policy of our congregation. In general terms that means that 50% of
Hildur’s bequest will go into Endowment Funds, 40% will be used at
the discretion of the congregation, and 10% will be given to benevolence
causes beyond our congregational life. These decisions will
be made and implemented by congregational leadership.
CORNER
The Natwick Epistle
“Do you not know that all of us who have been
baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into
his death? Therefore we have been buried with
him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ
was raised from the dead by the glory of the
Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.”
ROMANS 6:3-4
In his Large Catechism, Luther makes this remarkable
statement about Holy Baptism:
“In Baptism every Christian has enough to
study and to practice all his life. He always
has enough to do to believe firmly what Baptism
promises and brings – victory over death
and the devil, forgiveness of sin, God’s grace,
the entire Christ, and the Holy Spirit with his
gifts. In short, the blessings of Baptism are so
boundless that if timid nature considers them, it
may well doubt whether they could all be true.”
Luther loved to make wild, audacious statements
like this. But, let me say three things
about Baptism that Luther felt were important
for us to remember:
1. In Baptism, God rescues us sinners, wrapping
us up in the saving work of Jesus Christ.
Baptism is not something you and I do for God.
Baptism is something God does for us. Baptism
is God’s love letter – “I love you forever”
written in our lives.
But isn’t simply hearing that promise enough?
Why do we need both to hear God’s promise
and to be washed in Baptism?
Think about how we express love to one another.
We speak our love to another, but we
also act on it. We say, “I love you!” and hug
(perhaps even kiss) the one we love. Baptism
is God’s kiss on our forehead. We hear it, but
we also feel it. Baptism is God’s first move toward
us, opening us to receive all that Jesus
has done for us.
When we are baptized it is as if time has
stretched out. Our baptismal day and Good
Friday and Easter are all brought together. Jesus’
death and resurrection overtakes us in the
present and brings to you and me all of the rescuing
work of Christ; unmistakably . . . . . . . .
May 2011 THE PASTOR’S
. . .passing on to us all that Christ has done for us.
2. In Baptism God signs and seals us forever.
When we are baptized God sets his stamp of ownership upon
us and that is a brand – a mark that cannot be erased. In Baptism
we get something that can never be taken away from us:
God’s unconditional right to us, washed over us with promises
that God will not and cannot ever go back on.
Some of you remember the old TV series, “All in the Family”. In
one episode, their daughter, Gloria, and her self-professed
atheist husband, Mike, made the decision not to baptize their
baby, little Joey. Their wish was that Joey would grow up and
find his own religious path. Beside himself with worry, Archie
reminded his atheist son-in-law that he (Michael) had himself
been baptized.
“Yeah, but I renounced it years ago, Archie” Michael declared.
To which Archie Bunker responded, “You can go ahead and
renounce your belly button, but ya still got one!”
You and I cannot erase our baptism. You can try to run from
God, but God will come after you. Your baptism is part of your
permanent record. AND, you can always return to it, reclaim it,
and live back into it.
3. The last thing I would want you to remember about baptism
is this: Baptism is for life. Baptism launches us into an adventure
of faith, following Jesus. Baptism sends us into God’s mission
in the world.
When someone is baptized, we give a candle as a reminder of
what our Lord Jesus said: “Let your light so shine before others,
that they may see your good works and give glory to your
Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
Baptism is sheer gift, folks! It’s the gift that gives us the calling
that we receive. If you are baptized, you are called to take the
light of Christ with you, wherever you go. It’s the job of a lifetime
and the joy of a lifetime.
May it be so for each of us! Amen
Do you know what your children are doing?
Along with their Bible studies, Sunday School and Confirmation
students have been creating designs on fabric this spring. Wonderful,
colorful, joyful quilt squares which will be assembled by
Trinity Women Quilters. To our knowledge, this will be the first
project jointly undertaken by youth and adults in the quilting group.
Did you know the quilters, who started their good works in the
1940’s, are the longest continuous service group at Trinity?
Through their steady and abiding efforts week after week, they’ve
made literally thousands of quilts which have been distributed
worldwide through Lutheran World Relief. Many have also been
donated locally to St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, Green
Lake Bible Camp, homeless shelters, women’s and children’s shelters,
the food shelf, and other agencies.
The quilting tradition symbolizes our ability to work together, each
contributing as she is able (currently there are no gentlemen
quilters, but they are welcome anytime!) Some donate supplies,
some cut fabric, some sew squares, some lay out the tops and
linings, some tie the layers together, some finish the edges, some
coordinate all the work, and finally some deliver the quilts. Much
like barn-raising, this community effort is made light by many willing
hands.
Watch for more news about this project – the magic of this intergenerational
effort will result in a one-of-a-kind quilt to be gifted to
a new Habitat for Humanity house in St. Peter. We can’t wait for
you to see the finished product as well as photos of our children
and quilters in action.
But the fun of this project won’t be kept to the children and quilters.
In the months ahead, the entire congregation will be given an opportunity
to be a part of this stewardship endeavor.
Under His direction the whole body is fitted together perfectly,
and each part in its own special way helps the other parts, so
that the whole body is healthy, and growing and full of love.
Ephesians 4:16
When quilting, this is exactly what is done…and a completed quilt
is full of love!
Kids Who Care
On March 13 th , the 1 st - 6 th graders spent their
education hour at Benedictine’s Living Community
sharing the Word of God with the residents.
Together they sang songs, read their
bible story, and did a craft. The children left
their jellybean cross crafts with their new friends
as a visual reminder of their time together and a
great visual for Easter. The residents really
enjoyed our visit.
I am pleased to announce that $140 was raised
for God’s Global Barnyard during our “$1-a-
Chick” giving booth on Palm Sunday. Thank
you to everyone who supported it. The chicks
that you gifted will help 14 families feed their
growing kids nutritious meals and the extra
eggs will generate income putting them on a
path to a brighter future. To date our Sunday
School kids have purchased a cow, a sheep, 5
goats, a pig, a duck, and 10 chicks with their
Sunday School offering. And now we’ll add
another 140 chicks!
Faith-4-Life
We’re working on planning a fun game night at
the church for our 5 th & 6 th graders and maybe a
the dates and details when we have them.
Thank you to Lori Hanson for over-seeing this
ministry and a huge thank you to all the parents
who have hosted events this year. This ministry
is alive and thriving because of all of you!
Trinity Lutheran’s Co-ed Softball
So your tryout with the Minnesota Twins didn’t
work out? That’s okay!!! Now you can play
with Minnesota’s truly elite players (who may
also happen to be your closest friends) by signing
up for Trinity Lutheran Church’s co-ed softball
team. Games will be played on Monday
nights beginning in May and as many as 20
people can make the official roster. Husband
and wife combinations are preferred so we can
save paper on player contracts. For more information,
contact either Marc Bachman or
Dave Greisen. Dust off those gloves and sign
up in the narthex NOW!
All Trinity members share in food preparation and serving duties for
funerals and other church events throughout the year. The membership
has been divided into 13 groups with designated coordinators
for each month. This allows one group to have a month off each
year. Groups move up one month each year as well, so that you are
not serving in the same month each year. This list is also used to
secure ushers. When your assistance is needed, a coordinator will
contact you.
