VBS: High Seas Expedition! 

Get ready for a swashbuckling adventure as we embark on 

the voyage of a lifetime! Children going into Kindergarten 

thru 6 th Grade in the fall are invited to Set Sail with us on an 

exciting High Seas Expedition! Kids will be Exploring the 

Mighty Love of God at Trinity’s Vacation Bible School the 

week of June 7 th - 11 th from 9:00am - Noon. There is a suggested 

donation of $10/child, maximum of $25/family. 

Making new friends, creating crazy crafts, playing teambuilding 

games, enjoying goodies from the galley, and singing 

splashingly fun songs are just a few of the activities the 

kids will be doing to help their faith flow into real life.

bring your completed form and donation to the church 

office or the Education office

Summer Worship Schedule 

Summer Schedule begins Memorial Day 

weekend (Sunday, May 30) through Labor 

Day weekend (Sunday, September 5), the 

worship schedule on Sundays will be 8 & 

9:30am.

We will be receiving new members into our 

church family on Sunday, May 23 rd , at the 

9:30am worship service. This is a time of 

celebration for us as we continue to grow as 

a part of the body of Christ here in St. Peter. 

Be sure to take a moment to greet and welcome 

our new brothers and sisters in Christ. 

Introducing Our New 

Missionary Partners 

During the past several years our church has 

shared the privilege and responsibility for 

prayer and material support of Joyce and Ian 

Graue as they taught and ministered in new 

Guinea and the Central African Republic. 

They have not left the missionary field for 

health reasons. 

At this time we are beginning partnering 

with Eric and Christie Anspach-Hanson as 

they minister and teach in the Tokyo Lutheran 

Church. Their pictures and personal 

profiles are now posted on the hallway bulletin 

board near the Gustafson Fellowship 

Hall. Please read and note their requests 

and concerns as they faithfully move forward 

with their challenging call. Your encouragement, 

prayers and financial support 

will be greatly appreciated by both Eric and 

Christie.

CORNER 

Crossbeams 

(from Pastor C’s Study) 

In Bishop Jon Anderson's report offered to 

the Synod Assembly, recently, he pointed the 

voting members to a resource available 

online that identified "trends and forces" affecting 

the future of congregations. I find it 

very interesting and will share some of this 

material with you and congregational leadership 

over the coming months. 

This written summary describes thirteen (yes, 

13) trends or forces that are expected to impact 

us assuming that these trends continue. 

This report is offered by an organization 

called "Faith Formation 2020". 

Trend 1. Declining Participation in Christian 

Churches There has been a steady decline 

in all Christian congregations in the 

numbers of people attending worship and 

participating in church life. In 1990 about 

20.6% of the U.S. population was 'in church' 

on any given weekend. Today, that percentage 

has dropped to 17.3%. If the current 

trends continue, by 2020 14.7% is projected. 

Looked at another way, by 2020 85% 

of Americans will be staying away from worshipping 

God at church. Many think that 

North Americans will follow in the way of 

European Christians whose churches are 

largely empty on Sunday. 

Trend 2. Growth in No Religious Affiliation 

The number of Americans who claim 

"no religious affiliation" has almost doubled 

since 1990 rising from 8% to 15%. The 

number of American adults who identified 

themselves as Christian dropped 10% from 

1990 to 2008. (from 86% to 76%). By the 

way, these figures are substantiated by multiple 

studies. Among Americans age 18-29 

one-in -four claims no religious affiliation. 

All forms of organized religion are being 

rejected. This means, of course, that the traditional 

societal role of congregations and 

places of worship is being reduced. 

Trend 3. Becoming more "Spiritual" and 

Less "Religious" 80% of Americans describe themselves as 

both spiritual and religious. However, a growing minority 

describe themselves as spiritual but not religious. Today, 18 

percent of 18-39 year olds describe themselves as "spiritual 

but not religious" compared to 10% a decade ago. What does 

this mean for us as a congregation? If what people mean 

when the say they are spiritual but not religious is that they 

are generally concerned with "spiritual matters" (whatever 

that means) but not interested in organized religions, this 

means a growing population whose spiritual inclinations do 

not lead them to become involved in congregational life. By 

the way, I recently looked at the "spirituality" section at Barnes 

and Noble in Mankato to discover that it was all about 

"Tarot" -- something most of us would consider as occult. 

Congregational leaders in particular and Christians in general, 

I believe, are going to have to come to grips with these forces 

and trends. Creative approaches will be called for. We live in 

a moment of great concern and change. More to come . . .

National Alliance for Mental Illness 

(NAMI) — Mankato Area 

The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) will 

be operating the Brat Wagon at Cub East in Mankato 

May 3-6. 

Stop by and have a hot dog or brat and help as we do 

fundraising for our chapter. NAMI is a non-profit, 

grassroots organization. These funds help to supply brochures, 

classes and support groups. If you would like to 

volunteer at the Brat Wagon one of the days contact 

Diane Gerlach @ 931-6996. We are organizing workers 

in 2 hour shifts.

“SPRING INTO GROWTH” WILL 

HIGHLIGHT SALAD LUNCHEON 

Trinity Women along with their guests will gather for a 

salad luncheon on Saturday, May 8, 11:30 a.m.-1:30 

p.m. in the Gustafson room. Special guest presenter 

will be former member, Andrea (Miller) Haglund who 

will share how growing a garden compares to our growing 

in Christ. She will base her message on II Peter 

3:18 , “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our 

Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” A good friend of hers 

will join her and share her vocal talents with us as well. 

Tickets will be $7.00 and available at the door. A free 

will offering will also be received. Mark the date on 

your calendar and plan to bring your mother, daughter 

or friend and share this special time with your sisters in 

Christ. 

HEALTH KITS STILL NEEDED 

FOR DISASTER RELIEF 

Health kits will be collected as a part of the in-kind offering 

for the SW MN Synodical Convention to be held 

June 11-12, 2010 at Our Savior’s Lutheran in New Ulm. 

Check out the posters and baskets in the narthex for further 

information and the items most needed. 

Other in-kind offerings include donations to LWR 

Clean Water, Project Comfort (shipping costs), and 

Christian Literature (any Christian books which are 

non-denominational). 

SCHOLARSHIPS FOR FIRST TIME 

ATTENDERS AT WELCA CONVENTION 

Women who would be first time convention visitors 

wishing to learn about the Women of the ELCA are encouraged 

to apply for a convention scholarship for the 

synodical convention to be held June 11-12 at Our Savior’s 

Lutheran in New Ulm. 

You would need to attend all sessions to be held Friday 

and Saturday, June 11-12. The convention costs 

(registration, meals and hotel) will be paid by the synodical 

organization. You will be asked to evaluate your 

experience and share impressions with the convention 

participants. Scholarship application blanks are available 

on the bulletin board and are due by May 3, 2010.

WOMEN 

COME and SEE—GO and TELL 

SYNODICAL CONVENTION THEME 

The SW MN Women of the ELCA will gather in 

convention on Friday and Saturday, June 11-12, 

2010 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in New 

Ulm. All women are cordially invited to attend. 

Kay Mowbray is our unit delegate. Registration 

costs are $50 for both days or $40 for one day. 

Advanced registration blanks are available on the 

bulletin board and are due by May 24. Registration 

at the event begins at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, 

June 11. 

A special tour of New Ulm will be offered on 

Friday morning at an additional cost of $15. It 

will include a guided tour of Herman the German, 

Schell’s gardens, the Way of the Cross, the Cathedral 

and will end with a box lunch as you 

watch and listen to the Glockenspiel and hear a 

short performance of the Concord Singers. 

The featured speakers will be Lutheran World 

Relief president, John Nunes and Dawn Cocchiarella 

representing the Susan G. Komen for the 

Cure of breast cancer, Bishop Jon Anderson and 

Cam Martin representing churchwide WELCA. 

Eleven different workshops will be available both 

days and a special presentation about Katie and 

Martin Luther will be made by Johan and Sonja 

Hinderlie Friday evening followed by a Keg Party 

with 1919 root beer. 

LEONA MILLER ELECTED 

VICE PRESIDENT OF MN VALLEY 

CONFERENCE 

Our congratulations to Leona Miller from Trinity 

Women on her election to the position of vice 

president of the Minnesota Valley Conference 

WELCA. She will serve a two year term and 

could also be elected for a second term. 

Seven women from here attended the spring gathering 

held at First Lutheran in Winthrop on April 

13. There were a total of 123 in attendance representing 

21 different churches which was 100% 

representation from the units in the conference.

We will be working with an organization that networks 

with Twin Cities homeless shelters, battered women's 

centers, crisis nurseries, affordable housing projects, 

food shelves, and senior centers to give our group a 

chance to serve and connect more personally with the 

circumstances of struggling urban families. For some in 

our group the connection may be hands-on, such as 

serving a meal to families in a shelter, for other groups it 

may mean working behind the scenes, such as painting a 

crisis nursery.

Fourth Grade Wheat Planting 

On Sunday, April 25 th , the 4 th Grade Sunday School 

class planted wheat in a plot just outside of the kitchen 

door to the Education Wing. This planting is the first 

step in their preparation for First Communion, which

Fair Trade Coffees hit the spot on these 

cool, spring mornings when one finds the 

time to pause and enjoy the wakening of 

creation. If you’ve never tried it, consider 

purchasing Fair Trade coffee, tea, cocoa, 

and nuts that are available for sale at 

church on our little Fair Trade Stand 

(chocolate bars are available in the office). 

If you’ve never checked out the Fair 

Trade display in our narthex, we invite 

you to do so soon! By choosing to buy 

fair Trade products, we ensure that farmers 

in developing countries earn enough 

income to adequately feed and care for 

their families and communities. What a 

great way to help out people in need! 

Senior Recognition Sunday 

Please join us in worship at 9:30 on June 

6 th to honor Trinity’s Graduating Seniors. 

Special music will be provided by the 

Celebration Singers, this year’s recipients 

of Trinity’s Scholarships will be announced 

and honored, and a special ceremony 

will be used in which we honor 

both students and their parents on this 

important milestone in both of their lives. 

Community Baccalaureate Service 

Wed., June 2 nd, 7 p.m. at Christ Chapel 

Residents of the St. Peter area community, 

along with graduating seniors and 

their families, are invited to join in a special 

Baccalaureate Service at Gustavus 

Adolphus College on Wednesday, June 

2 nd , at 7:00 p.m. The Baccalaureate is a 

traditional community worship service of 

prayer and blessing for new graduates. 

This annual event is organized by the St. 

Peter Ministerial Association.

Electronic Givers Please Note: 

Trinity presently has 84 giving units participating 

in electronic giving which 

blesses our congregation with a positive 

financial flow. All charges associated 

with this program had been picked up by 

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, but 

they discontinued their program at the 

end of 2009. Since January, all charges 

for electronic giving (checking, savings 

and credit card accounts), are being paid 

by Trinity. When you signed up to start 

or continue electronic giving for 2010, 

you were asked to make a one time donation 

of $12.00 to off-set the charges of 

your account. If you have not already 

done so, please consider helping Trinity’s 

budget by remitting a $12.00 check for 

these electronic charges. Thank you!

Please know that a “thank-you” has been 

sent to Trinity from our synod office for 

our contribution of $22,729 to the work

The Sunday School Scoop 

May 16 th will be the last Sunday of Sunday School. It is also 

Parent Appreciation Day. You are invited to join us in the 

Gustafson Room during the education hour for a fun program 

and some treats to honor you and our Sunday School staff.

Kids Who Care 

On April 11 th the Sunday School students, on behalf of 

the Trinity Woman, put together 125 Heath Kits in 

about 45 minutes for Lutheran World Relief. It was so 

impressive to see all their tiny hands make such a big 

difference. If you haven’t seen them yet, check out the 

pictures in the hall by the Gustafson room. My deepest 

appreciation to our 6 th Grade class and their teacher 

Shannon Zachman for guiding and coaching the younger 

classes and to Lori Hanson and Ryan Eberhart for your 

extra help that morning. This couldn’t have been possible 

without you. When you see them, please thank them 

personally for me! 

On April 18 th , the 1 st - 4 th Graders spent their education 

hour at Benedictine’s Living Community sharing the 

Word of God with the residents. They sang songs with 

them, read their bible story with them, and did a craft 

with them. The children left their flower pot crafts with 

their new friends as a visual reminder of their time together. 

I heard that the residents enjoyed their time with 

the children so much that they talked about it for days. 

Vacation Bible School Fundraiser Update 

The Children and Families Committee wrapped up the 

VBS Fundraiser in April with $370.09 profit. Thank 

you to everyone who supported our efforts. Please help 

me congratulate our top sellers: Alexandra Eberhart, 

Taylor Graft, and Connor Winter. They were rewarded 

with a free movie pass to CineMagic St. Peter 5. We 

fell short of our goal and therefore are in need of additional 

assistance to help us make VBS memorable and 

exciting. Please check out the list of supplies needed on 

the display in the Narthex to see if there is anything you 

can help us with. 

Antiquities Fundraiser Update 

The Antiquities Fundraiser raised $550 for Trinity’s 

Milestone Ministry. Thank you so much to everyone 

who supported it. Your children looked adorable! I 

know you’ll treasure those photos forever. A warm 

thank you to the members of the Children and Families 

Committee for all that you did to help and a shower of 

gratitude to Cindy Porter for all the hours you put in to 

organize and see this fundraiser thru.

All Trinity members share in food preparation and serving duties 

for funerals and other church events throughout the year. The membership 

has been divided into 13 groups with designated coordinators 

for each month. This allows one group to have a month off 

each year. Groups move up one month each year as well, so that 

you are not serving in the same month each year. This list is also 

used to secure ushers. When your assistance is needed, a coordinator 

will contact you.
