Hurling
Thavin Juvanendran 5H
Sports writer
If there were ever a sport which
needed helmets, Hurling is it. It is
one of the most violent sports in
the history of the world. Hurling
is a combination of football, field
hockey, rugby and a drunken fight.
A game consists of two teams made
up of 15 unquestionably brave men.
The players use axe-like wooden
sticks called ‘hurleys’ to smack
a small ball as hard as possible at
head height into the goals.
A well hit ball can reach up to
100mph, which, considering that
no protective padding is ever worn,
is pretty daunting. Obviously
this sport is only played in a
country full of the bravest men,
not afraid of having their heads
knocked off by a small plastic
ball, in other words, Ireland.
For women, there is a similar
game called ‘camogie.’
The origins of Hurling can be
found back in Gaelic times
and are based on an energetic
outdoor activity. When the
Irish began to migrate overseas,
they tried to spread Hurling
but everyone else was too
frightened to take part.
In 1931, Time magazine
suggested the sport of golf was
“a form of hurling modified by
a more cautious race”.
