Page 6 School news Friday October 15 2010 Insight into this year’s charity leadership Andrew Vergottis J6WER Charity Correspondent While the school is awaiting eagerly the result of the charity vote (next Wednesday), The Citizen caught up with co-chairman Nathaniel Greenwold, to find out about his aspirations and expectations for this year’s Charity Appeal. Q - What inspired you to run for the chair of the Charity Committee and how well are you equipped for the post? A - My Mother runs a charity which she started from scratch. Her work made me feel that it would be very interesting and fulfilling to help raise money for the wonderful cause of our school’s charity. I feel I want to give back to society and the Charity Appeal gives me the opportunity to do so. I believe I am a good leader and more importantly, I am happy to listen and take into account other people’s ideas and opinions. Sam and I are approachable people, which is an essential quality for the Appeal. You may rest assured that I will be working very hard with the rest of the Committee so Bridget Kendall at City Politics Society Ezra Cohen J6MJW Politics & Economics Editor On Friday 8th October, Bridget Kendall, the BBC’s Diplomatic Correspondent, addressed the CLS Politics Society. The talk was unusual in that it primarily focused not on her current responsibilities, but instead addressed her past and the Communist Russia it is intertwined with – she first lived the Soviet Union in 1977 and followed this visit with successive trips to various regions of the regime. The Politics audience were therefore gifted with a captivating first-hand description of another world, delivered with the potent combination of experience and journalistic excellence, as she illustrated an image unfamiliar that this year’s Charity Appeal is successful, as well as enjoyable. Q – Will you follow the modus operandi of the previous chairmen or will you introduce some new initiatives/innovations in the fundraising process? A - There have been various incredible fundraising efforts in the past, so one may think it difficult to be original. Certainly, there will be customary, money-spinning events, like the annual sponsored walk/swim, mufti days, CLX-factor, cake sales etc. However, I see this year’s enthusiastic committee is brimming with new and exciting ideas and has a lot of potential to fulfil our expectations and raise record sums. Q - What is your response to criticism that the charities have to be UK registered? A - It is true that this is one of the criteria for the chosen charities and rules are rules. One should not forget that there is a great number of charities in this country for worthy causes that merit our support. The benefits of many of these charities are felt in other countries too, in particular in the developing world; a good example is last year’s charity, Malaika Kids in aid of Tanzanian children. Of particular interest was the secrecy she described, which had permeated even her closest friendships, compelling her and her friends to withhold their true sentiments on the Communist state even from each other. The talk was, however, not confined to recollections – Ms. Kendall also exploited her expertise in asserting a cautiously optimistic view concerning Russia’s future, balancing praise for Vladimir Putin’s economic reforms with fear of a descent to dictatorship if Mr. Putin proposes his candidacy once more. Friday October 15 2010 Billionaire Attacked by an Elephant Nima Amin 4A Reporter We hear many things in the news nowadays but none quite as shocking as this. A Californian billionaire has described how he was trampled on and nearly killed in a terrifying attack while on safari in Tanzania. Tom Siebel, aged 56, made a fortune of £1.06 billion from business software. He still doesn’t know what caused the 6 ton animal to charge at 30 mph as he hiked across the Serengeti National Park at dawn. He left his wife and two daughters at the lodge when Siebel and a guide went tip toeing around the buffalo lake when they saw a group of elephants grazing. “I’m not sure what happened next” Tom Siebel told Fortune magazine. “ All of a sudden one Woman sues after Transformers 3 accident Julian Green 4B Roving reporter The makers of Transformers 3 are being sued by the family of Gabriela Cedillo who was left with brain damage after an accident during the filming of the movie. During filming on the 1st of September, Mrs Cedillo (an extra), was 500 feet away from the stunt scene when she was hit in the head by a stray piece of metal. Gabriela Cedillo is currently being treated at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago. The accident left her permanently brain damaged, paralysed on her left side and with her left eye stitched shut. Her family has filed a lawsuit against Paramount Pictures accusing them of negligence. Total damages sought are in excess of $350,000. Paramount officials said they were sorry about the accident and sent their best wishes to the Cedillo family. Associates say he is still often in pain and still wears protective gear around his leg but is determined to get better. Despite his love for nature, he has no plans to go back in the near future and who would blame him. PARENTS: WHY THEY DON’T UNDERSTAND YOU Jake Moss S6 Unusual Reporter These days it is often commented on how the middle-aged and the elderly are unable to understand some aspects of the modern world. Would it be better if our parents were “cool and hip”, or “feeling the cold with a dodgy hip?” Some people think it’s only natural that they don’t know the difference between Cheryl Cole and a bag of coal… the difference is that the coal is useful. The main area of geriatric confusion is definitely technology. The youth are always the first to grasp an understanding of the latest Apple product, but our parents seem to have difficulty. When you’re asked questions, such as “what is an ‘apps’?”, you know that there is a terrible problem. Some old people think that an iPad is just an iPhone for people with bad eyesight or enormous fingers. This is not a world I want to live in, so I’ve devised a list of very basic definitions of some modern phenomena, for the benefit of the older generation: • “T4” – a TV programme on weekend mornings watched by about 8 or 9 teenagers. Filled with chequered shirts, hair gel and references to Tinie Tempah. About as amusing or interesting as a tropical disease. • “T4 on the Beach” – an annual event full of chequered shirts and hair gel, this time on a beach. Tip: if you are middleaged and come across this party, do not mention biscuits, the financial crisis, nonchequered shirts or Cliff Richards. • “Facebook” – either a veritable smorgasbord of social delights, or if you have no friends, the height of loneliness. • “World of Warcraft” – the actual height of loneliness. • “Paris Hilton” – a lovely hotel with views of the Eiffel Tower.
