Page 10 News and comment Video game review Assassins Creed: Brotherhood Marcus Collier-Wright 5B Reviews Section Editor Arguably Ubisoft’s flagship series, the impact of the two previous Assassins Creed games on the gaming world cannot be undervalued, and so it is that the third of the series, Brotherhood, hits our consoles with great expectations to perform to the high levels of its predecessors. And perform it does, offering over twenty hours of single player gameplay along with countless side quests and activities for the proper gamer to sink his teeth into. Whilst not branded as a full blown sequel, it certainly feels like one, as once again the player steps into the boots of the assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze. Now fighting for his cause in the absolutely enormous city of Rome, the landscape and environment are produced exceptionally well, immersing the player into the exciting cultural times of Renaissance Italy. Battling against the corrupt Borgia rulers, Ezio lives through a plot that is well told, exciting, filled with suspense, and has an extraordinary twist of an ending. Along with the brilliant parkour, freerunning style of travel that has made this series a favourite of many gamers, Ezio has many new abilities at his disposal, signifying a huge improvement since the last title. Vastly improved combat, an updated economic system (now spread throughout the entire game), and most importantly, the ability to recruit and train his own assassins for his own brotherhood give this game new life when it had threatened to become boring and repetitive. Outside the main story, the multiplayer offers hours of simple yet exciting fun as gamers from around the world compete against each other. As with its predecessors, Assassins Creed: Brotherhood has placed itself in a league of its own, offering more variety than ever before, and taking the excellent idea of the assassin to even higher levels. Miss this at your peril. Rating: 10/10 Film Review: Monsters Nick Berić 5H Citizen Review Team Monsters had an excessive amount of potential, but on the whole, it did not live up to its expectations. I, however, was still entertained by the film. Gareth Edwards presents a mediocre film which on occasions shows terrific CGI but due to the rareness of it, is isn’t exploited to its full potential. The amazing acting gives the film something to boast about as dashing Scoot McNairy and glamorous Whitney Able portray the protagonists superbly. McNairy plays a mercenary paparazzo, with Able portraying an idealist, critical of his fuzzy morals. Two opposites who form an unlikely friendship and more. Borrowing the handheld lensing and easy pace Album of the week Arcade Fire - The Suburbs Daoud Al-Janabi Citizen Reviewer ‘The Suburbs’ is arguably the spiritual successor of Arcade Fire’s magnum opus, ‘Funeral’. It carries forward many of the themes from their first offering, especially the semi-autobiographical tone of the album, presenting us with a personal look at the band’s life. Musically, there are all the features one Friday December 10 2010 of a low budget character piece, director Gareth Edwards, a CGI artist by trade, has created a dystopian landscape that’s so naturalistic it’s uncanny. As a writer, he’s a less successful realist, resorting to some pretty hoary contrivances to keep his boy and girl in the same space for the film’s duration, and the largely improvised post-mumble performances don’t add much depth. The film peaks dramatically and creatively, with an alien mating dance of astonishing verisimilitude. It’s a cheap shot plot device but also visually spectacular. The film had much potential but the final result was average with the final scene which ending abruptly in medias res leaving many loose ends. Rating: 3/5 would expect in an Arcade Fire album, from the commanding percussion to the sweeping violins. Yet it presents a more toned down side of the band, one which is less hasty to settle into their comfort zone of epic tracks often featuring all 7 members of the band playing at once. The record features many more calculated tracks such as ‘Modern Man’ while still featuring energetic songs like ‘We Used To Wait’, my personal highlight of the album. While lacking an obvious ‘Wake Up’ moment, the album represents a maturity on the band’s part, especially singer Win Butler who has become more competent a storyteller over the course of their three records.
