Herzl Happenings By Stacy Kesner, M.A. Early Childhood Center Director Stacy@tebh.org January and February will be full of winter wonder at the ECC. Our science tables will be fi lled with the amazing “Instant Snow” which will grow right before the children’s eyes! “Mad Science” will come to amaze us with two workshops, World of Worms and Rocket Power. In February the children at the Early Childhood Center will explore the holiday of Tu B’shevat. Reading stories, singing songs and making special Tu B’shevat projects are some of the creative activities the children will participate in. The children will also plant fl owers to take home and replant in their garden to commemorate this “Birthday of the Trees." Our Early Childhood Center offers an innovative, developmentally sensitive curriculum. Judaic activities foster and refl ect basic knowledge of our Jewish heritage. Our integrated curriculum includes science, art, dance, language arts, music, stories, and water play. Purposeful learning comes about as a result of activities organized around childdirected play. Our goal is to provide each child with an environment that is set up to stimulate curiosity, which will in turn stimulate learning and imagination. Our registration for the school year 2012-2013 will begin February 1. We are currently making appointments for families to tour our center in January, February and March. (6) TEMPLE TOPICS /// JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2012 ECC Summer Camp June 18–July 27, 2012 9:00AM–1:45PM 3 and 4 year olds* It’s time to register for Temple Emanuel’s ECC Summer Camp! Please join us for a fun-fi lled summer. Each week our campers will spend their time enjoying water play, games, arts and crafts, outdoor activities, science experiments, singing in the Chapel for Shabbat, and movement activities all within a loving Jewish environment. Our summer camp welcomes 3 and 4 year olds* whether or not they attend our ECC. Our camp program will run for six weeks. Come all six weeks or choose your own weeks! Only 8% of early childhood center programs nationally are NAEYC accredited. Baby Emanuel A variety of different Baby Emanuel Programs are offered at Temple Emanuel. Currently we offer a 12–24 month Parent and Me class, and a Friday Shabbat class. Each program provides developmentally appropriate activities within our cozy and warm Jewish environment. Teaching From Emanuel Day School Developing minds... Nourishing souls... Cultivating creativity... www.teads.org by Rachel Sternheim, Assistant Head of School Hebrew Profi ciency Project: Teaching Students to Use the Language Alef, bet, gimmel dalet…the Hebrew letters are the building blocks of the Hebrew language, but to really use the language in a practical way, students need to be taught in a systematic way that goes beyond the basics with teachers emphasizing communication skills. At Temple Emanuel Academy Day School, Hebrew is an integral part of the curriculum and the staff is continually incorporating the newest instructional methods into the curriculum. Three years ago, the school adopted the use of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century. As the Hebrew/Judaic Studies coordinator, it was important to me that the school’s program achieves the highest level possible in foreign language education in general and Hebrew in particular. As a team, the Hebrew staff has been identifying goals and objectives, updating textbooks and materials and been working to enhance classroom instruction. This year, Temple Emanuel Academy Day School is one of fi ve Jewish day schools in the greater Los Angeles area to participate in the Hebrew Profi ciency Project led by the nationally acclaimed Hebrew at the Center, Inc. in partnership with the Bureau of Jewish Education. The goal of the project is to train key Hebrew language staff in select Los Angeles schools in order to further professionalize the teaching and learning of Hebrew. The project focuses on developing leadership in each of the participating schools and in the Los Angeles area in order to embed expertise that will be able to empower Hebrew language teachers to impact their learners’ outcomes, maximize the acquisition of Hebrew, ignite a passion for Hebrew in students and elevate the status of Hebrew in the community. The Hebrew Profi ciency Project is just one example of the kind of programs that are put in place to help our students reach their potential and beyond. The students at Temple Emanuel are the priority, and the teachers consistently bring their best to the classroom. On a separate note, there are some important staff and volunteer changes to announce. We are pleased to have Rabbi Jonathan Aaron as our Interim Head of School, while thanking Donna Raskin for her work at TEADS over the last year and half. The Board of Regents has made some changes in its leadership resulting in electing John Stone as the president of the board. In other news from the board, Martin Berman will be leading the Head of School search committee.
