At Temple Emanuel people find meaning
and purpose in their lives and discover
holiness through connection with Jewish
tradition, with each other and with God.
We open doors to Judaism that is alive,
vibrant and joyful, with innovative prayer
a passion to repair the world. We honor
each individual's unique Jewish journey
Jewish people, Israel and the larger world.

Scott Shlecter Dr. Elisa Newman White
sshlecter@gmail.com elsnwmn@aol.com
By Scott Shlecter
Just another Friday night...
A week ago as I write this, our Temple had its monthly Shabbat
Unplugged (December 2). We do this most every month. But to
me, it was an extraordinary and inspiring event, and I would like to
share some of the reasons why.
The fi rst of many memorable moments was at dinner, when
an long time member asked me why the service was called
"Unplugged". I guess we sometimes take such things for granted.
I explained that the term "Unplugged" comes from rock music,
when concerts or recordings are done in acoustic rather than
electric guitars, which creates a softer, more mellow rendition.
As rock music becomes increasingly the domain of aging Baby
Boomers, perhaps we should enshrine this bit of knowledge in our
literature along the lines of Passover's Four Questions, so we can
be sure of passing it L'dor V'dor - The inquisitive child asks... "Why
is this service called Unplugged?"
Not only are the guitars toned down, but we also create a softer,
more mellow mood in our Sanctuary by lowering the lighting,
as we do with our Ne'ilah service. I fi nd the atmosphere very
conducive to moving my karma from the stress of the work week
to the peace that Shabbat offers. Sharp eyed observers have
pointed out to me that when we turn the Star Wars Light Sabers
off (those vertical fl orescent lights on our western wall), it also
unfortunately turns off the Menorah. This gives me the opportunity
to thank Scott Stone, who has been serving tirelessly to see the
project to completion. At the end of the service I made a point
to thank and congratulate Scott on how beautiful the space was,
but all the more so for the sacred moments that had taken place.
Scott continues his work both to iron out this and other remaining
glitches, as well as leading our Campaign Committee in imagining
what the next phase of our facilities upgrading should be.
In addition to the architectural beauty, the vibe was enhanced by
having our Sanctuary fi lled almost to capacity. The Adler family
was there in force, to begin the celebration of Jake becoming
a Bar Mitzvah. Our Temple Board and families were also part of
the crowd. More on the Board in a bit. And "the regulars shuffl ed
in..." to borrow from aging rocker Billy Joel.
Early in the service Sydney Turk Porter and Hale Porter were
brought to the center of the circle, to receive a blessing for all the
contributions they have made over the years to our congregation,
as they move to the desert for their next life adventure. Sydney
was for many years the godmother of our Caring Committee,
which helps to organize visits to ill congregants and other acts
of lovingkindness. Hale was a congregational leader in varying
capacities for many years. Of course we are sad to see them
leave, but due to the strong foundation Sydney leaves behind,
the Caring Committee is now stronger than ever, with a recent
meeting attended by 30 congregants eager to continue the good
works.
The service was also billed as the Board's installation. On one
level, this occurrence was so late relative to when this Board
actually began its term, its was perhaps almost silly (our term
runs July to June, so we are nearly 50% through). Nevertheless,
about 20 of our Board members were there, most with family
and friends. At the designated time, we were invited up to
the Bimah, where each of us briefl y introduced ourselves.
The congregation read a paragraph calling us to service, we
responded with a paragraph acknowledging our responsibility to
care for our Temple, and the clergy completed the ceremony with
a benediction. Even though I have been through this "exercise" a
few times before, this one touched me (and I would bet the rest of
us) in a stronger way, surrounded by a substantial representation
of our community, and having almost all of the Board together.
Along with our weekly announcements, we also handed out our
Board Covenant. This is a one page document that enumerates
all the things we ask of Board members. The clergy have guided
us in the construction of this document over the past few years.
Aside from derech eretz (maintaining ethical and responsible
comportment), we ask quite a bit of our Board members in both
time and money. The fact that 30 such capable members of our
community have agreed to step up to this level of responsibility
is remarkable, and is something our Temple is most fortunate to
have.
Selfl ess dedication to the Temple extends well beyond the Board,
to dozens of other service committees - for our schools, our
fundraising, greeters, and many other functional areas such as
fi nance and membership. It would be impossible for our Temple
to operate without the dedication of so many members of our
congregation
I'll conclude with a request of the congregation. All of us are
both volunteers and only human. What all volunteers contribute
of their time usually comes at the expense of professional, family
or well earned personal downtime. Most Temples face ongoing
challenges, and we are not immune. We always welcome your
feedback when given constructively and lovingly. And if the
opportunity arises, please thank your favorite Board member or
volunteer for for their selfl ess dedication to our Temple and its
sacred work.
See you at the next Shabbat Unplugged or our other monthly
musical service, Shabbat B'Yachad.
TEMPLE TOPICS /// JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2012 (3)

By Rabbi Laura Geller
RabbiGeller@tebh.org
The Rest of My Life
The English word “sabbatical” comes from the word
“Shabbat.” It was first used in 1886 to refer to a year’s absence
granted to researchers which typically occurred once in every
seven years of teaching. The idea emerged from the Biblical
injunction to let the land lie fallow every seven years to give
it a chance to regenerate. Not a bad idea for those who are
teaching and researching to have a chance to take a breath
and regenerate a bit. In fact, it is probably a good idea for all
of us! Professors and rabbis are among the lucky few whose
professions encourage this privilege. The clergy at Temple
Emanuel are grateful to have leadership who recognizes that
it is important for clergy to have time to reflect, study and
renew ourselves.
Over my almost 17 years as rabbi here, I have taken two
separate months of sabbatical leave, both in the summers
when I studied as a Rabbinic Fellow in the Hartman Institute in
Jerusalem. In January I will take another month of sabbatical
leave to give me some time to think about a project which
I hope will benefit the congregation and myself as well:
reaching out to baby boomers and helping them discover
meaning and purpose through their connection to Jewish
experience and our synagogue.
My greatgrandparents’ lifetime was characterized by three
major life stages: childhood, midlife and old age. The idea
that “adolescence” was a life stage didn’t develop until the
early years of the twentieth century. For my parents, there
was childhood, adolescence, midlife and then retirement
at 65 to Florida. For the Boomer generation it seems to be
different. We are seeing a lot being written about another
life stage between midlife and old age, sometimes called
“the third stage” or the “encore stage.” It constitutes a very
large cohort, getting larger by the year. As of January, 2011,
a person in the United States will turn 65 every eight seconds.
(4) TEMPLE TOPICS /// JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2012
The well known social scientist Steven Cohen has written:
“Boomers (people born between 1946 and 1964) are the
first generation in human history… to reasonably anticipate
living well and wholesomely into their 80’s and 90’s if not
beyond…. Jews (as others) are not only living longer, they
are living in an age of meaning-seeking, with the interest
and wherewithal to make living a life of meaning an ultimate
and reasonably obtainable objective for any point in their
lives. As such, this aging, yet largely healthy generation of
American Jews poses a challenge and an opportunity to
a society and community that is as yet unprepared for the
totally new policy and planning opportunities that loom in
the near future.”
My sabbatical project will begin with my catching up on the
literature that relates to this third stage; it turns out there
is quite a bit, but not much of it focused on the Jewish
community. I also intend to meet with people already thinking
about these questions around the country. I’m hopeful that
when I return to work in February, we can begin a series of
informal conversations that will help us clarify how best to
create a culture within our congregation that helps the Baby
Boomers among us celebrate the next stage of our lives.
Let me know after February 1 if you would be interested in
being part of one of these conversations.
I’ll be back in time to welcome one of my heroes, Anat
Hoffman, Director of the Israel Religious Action Center,
sponsored by the Reform Movement, and a leader of Women
at the Wall, on Friday night February 3. More information
about her visit is on page 22. I hope I’ll see you there.
Music Talks
By Rabbi Jonathan Aaron
RabbiAaron@tebh.org
We talk all the time about the synagogue being a kind of
mezuzah, or set of mezuzot that adorn the many different
doors with which one can enter Judaism. Whether you enter
through Torah study, Israel, education, prayer, poker, choir,
the intergenerational play, food, or as a social center, our
synagogue opens its doors for all who wish to experience
Judaism in a way that gives them meaning. From the time
I was small, singing a little too loudly at my mother’s choir
rehearsal in a tiny classroom of my childhood synagogue,
to leading 200 teenagers in a song session at Kutz Camp
in Warwick, New York, music has been the mezuzah that
generates meaningful Jewish moments.
Over the years, I’ve spoken many times about my grandfather,
Cantor Hugo Chaim Adler, the main cantor at the synagogue
in Manheim, Germany and Worcestor, Massachusetts, and
his son, my uncle Dr. Samuel Adler (who came here a couple
of years ago for a scholar in residence weekend). Each of
them has added significantly to the corpus of Jewish music
in America. My uncle wrote a melody that is known by
almost every Jew in this country, the “Motzi” song that goes
before the blessing for the bread. My grandfather has been
responsible for saving the music of Levandovsky, a nineteenth
century composer who died on the day Hugo was born. And
then there was me, a rabbi in Beverly Hills, who has continued
the tradition of writing music for the synagogue, although my
music has entered the synagogue in a more subtle and quiet
way. My writing doesn’t have music written out (although
someday I’m sure that will happen), isn’t for purchase (yet),
and you may not even know you have heard it at all. It is
the place where my Judaism and my art intersect, the place
where I can enter the synagogue in a way that enters right
to my heart, and to that place inside of me that can’t be
measured or found with any monitoring machine – my soul.
Since I was a teenager and I first picked up the guitar, I’ve been
writing music. Of course, early on most of my songs involved
kissing girls or unrequited love like any good teenager in
angst. Later, they were about anything that caught my eye.
But over the last several years, I’ve concentrated on music
for children (the CD Michelle and I made together can be
found in our gift-shop and iTunes, under the name “The
Treehouse Band with Slim and Lulu”), and music for our
services at Temple Emanuel. My Shalom Aleichem has been
used in Unplugged since it’s inception, and this past year,
two melodies of mine have been added to the service, Ufros
Aleinu and just this past month, V’shamru. This last melody
has come from deep inside of me, and I just wanted to share
the process.
These past two months have been difficult ones for me,
personally. One evening I had a meeting at seven PM, and
I headed into my office at about five o’clock, at dusk. The
room had some light in it, but not much. I was filled with
a heavy feeling that evening, and had the urge to create
something with lightness and positive energy, so I picked up
my guitar and just started playing. I had wanted to write a
V’shamru that went along with the mood of the Ufros Aleinu
in the service so that there would be a flow of energy moving
across that section of the service…it needed to be in the
same key, have a similar feel, but keep us moving forward.
About an hour later, a knock came on the door. Cantor
Kliger heard the guitar and slowly opened the door into a
room that was pitch black. He said, “What the heck is going
on in here?” I said, “You wanna hear our new V’Shamru?,” he
said, “sure, but what if it’s bad?” (He was kidding). I played
it for him, he learned it quickly, and that week, we debuted
it at the Shabbat Unplugged service. We sang the chorus a
couple of times, and by the time we were on the third chorus,
it seemed like everyone was singing, smiling, closing eyes,
almost as if they had known this song their whole lives. That
moment brought tears to my eyes. How could something
that didn’t exist one week ago, come to life in a way that
actually moved people? I will never forget that first moment
it was played and sung in our new sanctuary. More than any
sermon, more than any d’var Torah, people were touched
by the waves of the music, the combination of tones that
left them with a feeling. It is very difficult to describe why
a melody touches someone inside, but when it does, it can
carry a person to a new place, and for me, for just a couple
of minutes, I found that place, amongst our congregation
singing this melody, singing what was in my heart.
January and February will be full of winter wonder at the
ECC. Our science tables will be fi lled with the amazing
“Instant Snow” which will grow right before the children’s
eyes! “Mad Science” will come to amaze us with two
workshops, World of Worms and Rocket Power. In February
the children at the Early Childhood Center will explore the
holiday of Tu B’shevat. Reading stories, singing songs and
making special Tu B’shevat projects are some of the creative
activities the children will participate in. The children will
also plant fl owers to take home and replant in their garden
to commemorate this “Birthday of the Trees."
Our Early Childhood Center offers an innovative,
developmentally sensitive curriculum. Judaic activities foster
and refl ect basic knowledge of our Jewish heritage. Our
integrated curriculum includes science, art, dance, language
arts, music, stories, and water play. Purposeful learning
comes about as a result of activities organized around childdirected
play. Our goal is to provide each child with an
environment that is set up to stimulate curiosity, which will in
turn stimulate learning and imagination.
Our registration for the school year 2012-2013 will begin
February 1. We are currently making appointments for
families to tour our center in January, February and
Teaching
From
Emanuel
Day School
Developing minds...
Nourishing souls...
Cultivating creativity...
by Rachel Sternheim, Assistant Head of School
Hebrew Profi ciency Project:
Teaching Students to Use the
Language
Alef, bet, gimmel dalet…the Hebrew letters are the building
blocks of the Hebrew language, but to really use the language
in a practical way, students need to be taught in a systematic
way that goes beyond the basics with teachers emphasizing
communication skills.
At Temple Emanuel Academy Day School, Hebrew is an
integral part of the curriculum and the staff is continually
incorporating the newest instructional methods into the
curriculum. Three years ago, the school adopted the use
of the National Standards for Foreign Language Learning in
the 21st Century. As the Hebrew/Judaic Studies coordinator,
it was important to me that the school’s program achieves
the highest level possible in foreign language education in
general and Hebrew in particular. As a team, the Hebrew
staff has been identifying goals and objectives, updating
textbooks and materials and been working to enhance
classroom instruction.
This year, Temple Emanuel Academy Day School is one of
fi ve Jewish day schools in the greater Los Angeles area to
participate in the Hebrew Profi ciency Project led by the
nationally acclaimed Hebrew at the Center, Inc. in partnership
with the Bureau of Jewish Education. The goal of the project
is to train key Hebrew language staff in select Los Angeles
schools in order to further professionalize the teaching and
learning of Hebrew. The project focuses on developing
leadership in each of the participating schools and in the
Los Angeles area in order to embed expertise that will be
able to empower Hebrew language teachers to impact their
learners’ outcomes, maximize the acquisition of Hebrew,
ignite a passion for Hebrew in students and elevate the status
of Hebrew in the community.
The Hebrew Profi ciency Project is just one example of the
kind of programs that are put in place to help our students
reach their potential and beyond. The students at Temple
Emanuel are the priority, and the teachers consistently bring
their best to the classroom.
On a separate note, there are some important staff and
volunteer changes to announce. We are pleased to have
Rabbi Jonathan Aaron as our Interim Head of School, while
thanking Donna Raskin for her work at TEADS over the last
Get Away with Temple
Emanuel!
Temple Emanuel Family Retreat:
January 27 - 29
There is an old Hasidic story in which the rabbi's young son
begins to wander away from the village to meander in the
woods. His father worries, because the woods are so dark
and dangerous. He fears that something lurking there might
harm his him.
He says to his child, “You know, I have noticed that you like
to spend time in the woods each day. I wonder, why do you
go there?” The boy replies, “I go there to fi nd God.”
“That is a good thing,” his father gently replies. “I am glad
you are searching for God. Do you know that God is the
same anywhere?”
“Yes,” replied the boy, “but I am not.”
While those of us at Temple Emanuel are unlikely to let
our children wander alone in the wilds of Los Angeles, we
understand the sentiment that sometimes it is necessary to
get away from one’s ordinary schedule and surroundings
to connect with ourselves and one another in a different,
deeper way. Shabbat can help, as it breaks us out of our
norm and requires us to slow down. However there might
be times when even Shabbat in the city is not enough.
Sometimes we just need to get away!
For the last several years, groups of families from Temple
Emanuel have taken to the roads to experience a weekend
away at the Temple Emanuel Family Retreat. Together, we
have explored themes of Shabbat and family, taken hikes,
Temple Emanuel Religious school is currently accepting enrollment.
Temple Emanuel Religious School
Tu B'Shevat Family Day
Sunday, February 5, 2012
Religious School families celebrate the birthday
of the trees
• 9:00-10:00 Hebrew Learning & Parent Schmooze
• 10:00- 10:30 Welcome & Assembly
• 10:30-11:30 Multi-Sensory, hands on Tu’b’Shevat
family activities
• 11:30 Celebrating the birthday of the trees!
done yoga, traversed an adventure course, climbed trees,
created art and celebrated community. In this setting,
children are free to run and play in a safe place and adults
have time together for conversation with old friends and
new.
We are still Temple Emanuel when we gather away from our
‘regular’ sacred space, but there is undoubtedly something
different when we are away in nature together. Whether it
is the crisp, cool feeling in the air, the shared Shabbat meals,
or the way that relationships with our Temple friends deepen
and grow, it is undeniable: God is the same anywhere, but
when we get away we change, and are able to see the world
with new eyes.
We hope that you will join us this year for our annual Temple
Emauel Family Retreat. Families of all shapes and sizes
are welcome! This year we will journey together to Camp
JCA Shalom in Malibu. We begin with Shabbat on Friday
afternoon, January 27 and return on Sunday, January 29.
Endow a Chair in Temple Emanuel’s New Sanctuary
Create a lasting memory for yourself or your family by endowing one of the new chairs
in our beautifully renovated Corwin Family Sanctuary.
One of the most dramatic aspects of the synagogue transformation is the transition in the sanctuary from fi xed theater chairs
to ‘fl exible seating’ that can be arranged in a traditional forward-facing set-up or in the circular setting used for Shabbat
Unplugged. By leveling the sanctuary fl oor and introducing new upholstered armchairs, we have transformed how we use the
sanctuary and reclaimed our majestic worship space as our primary place of worship.
It is not too late to be a part of Temple Emanuel’s amazing synagogue transformation. We have raised more than 80% of
our capital campaign funds from 20% of the congregation. Now, we need your help to close out our
$10 $ 1 0
million Phase One fund-raising goal. If every temple family steps forward to support pport this project, we
will have achieved our second goal of 100% participation.
Please consider how you or your family can participate in a meaningful way ay in
the New Emanuel Campaign and join your congregational family to ensure ure a
strong future for Temple Emanuel’s next generation. Gifts of any amount t are
appreciated, and with a contribution of $3,600 you will be able to endow a new
sanctuary chair. A dedication plaque, attached to the left side of each chair r and
visible when seated in the chair, will acknowledge your generosity. Additional tional
recognition opportunities are available, such as Jerusalem Limestone Pavers for a
gift of $5,000.
For more information and to see a complete list of naming opportunities,
please contact Tova Joffe Larsen at 310.288.3742 x 508 or tova@tebh.org. All
Steven Daneshgar
January 7, 2012
My name is Steven Daneshgar and I will become a Bar Mitzvah
on January 7, 2012. I have been at Temple Emanuel religious
school since 4th grade, I have enjoyed it immensely. I am
currently in 7th grade at El Rodeo School. I have been taking
Karate instructions since 3rd grade and I am currently a green
belt. I enjoy playing soccer, swimming, playing video games,
and hanging out with my friends.
For my Bar Mitzvah project, I will collect tzedakah to be
donated to the homeless.
I am extremely excited to become a Bar Mitzvah and want to
thank Jeff Magder, Rabbi Aaron, Cantor Kliger,, my parents,
and my brothers, Justin and Brian, for being so great and for
helping me prepare for this special day.
Celebrate with a
Temple Emanuel
Oneg Shabbat
Celebrate a special simcha such as a bar/bat mitzvah,
wedding, your next birthday, anniversary, engagement,
baby naming, your grandchild’s birth, graduation, or a
friend’s achievement or event by sponsoring an Oneg
Shabbat at one of our Friday night or Shabbat morning
services.
An Oneg Shabbat is a way to celebrate the sweetness
of life by sponsoring the sweet noshes we serve after
services. As a sponsor, your name or the name of those
whose event you want to celebrate can be publicized
in the weekly Temple email, the Shabbat program and
our Temple Topics newsletter (if we know far enough in
advance).
Contact Katie Almaleh at: Katie@tebh.org or
Giselle Nissenbaum
January 28, 2012
My name is Giselle Nissenbaum and I will become a Bat
Mitzvah on January 28, 2012. I am currently in seventh grade
at the Wildwood School in West LA, and I have been a student
at the Temple Emanuel Religious School since fourth grade.
My family and I live in Beverly Hills, including my two brothers,
Ari and Eli, and a chocolate labrador, Rascal.
About 3 ½ years ago my family and I moved to Beverly Hills
from New York City. Previously, I attended nursery school and
religious school at Central Synagogue in Manhattan.
Outside of my studies, I have many interests including the arts
and sports. I love to dance and participate on a competitive
dance team, play soccer and piano, and for the past year, I
have enjoyed learning sign language. I also look forward to
family trips to Israel, where my father was born, to see my
family there and go to special places like the beautiful beach
near Netanya.
For my Mitzvah Project, I am making a mini-documentary
about accomplished deaf women, which is giving me a lot
of inspiration. I am going to host a screening at Temple
Emanuel Beverly Hills, for which people will buy tickets; the
money raised will be donated to help purchase hearing aids
for a fi nancially needy child getting services at the John Tracy
Clinic. I am deaf myself, and wear cochlear implants which
are helping me “hear” differently. So I feel very fortunate to
have the benefi t of these medical advances and to especially
have the support of so many different people. Being grateful
always keeps me motivated.
Preparing for my Bat Mitzvah has been a big challenge, but
really worth it. And remember, I am always lip reading, so
watch out!
Dylan Michelle Brenner
February 18, 2012
My name is Dylan Michelle Brenner and I will become a Bat
Mitzvah on February 18, 2012. My parents, Amy and Greg,
along with my brother, Jesse, are all excited and supportive
while I get ready for my big day!
I am currently in the seventh grade at Los Angeles Center for
Enriched Studies, LACES for short. I pass my free time outside
of school, reading, shopping, hanging out with my friends,
swimming, and hiking. In addition I play volleyball and softball
and hope to continue playing these sports for a very long
time. I’ve also been playing piano since the second grade.
For my Bat Mitzvah project I worked two weeks at a school
called Vista Del Mar with kids who have psychological,
behavioral, and emotional problems. I went in thinking it
would be interesting to learn about these issues and to meet
children trying to live with them. I came out grateful for my
good health, and my wonderful family. Some of these kids
have neither, and I learned how important it is to mentor and
show kindness and affection to those who don’t see enough
of it.
Jewish Spirituality
Rabbi Laura Geller and ten women from Temple Emanuel
participated in a Shabbaton womens' retreat the weekend
of Dec 9-11th. The retreat was organized by our former
Assistant Rabbi, Rabbi Jill Zimmerman, and sponsored by
the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.
Thirty amazing women gathered from Los Angeles, Northern
California, as well as the New York area. We learned mindful
meditation techniques from master meditation teacher,
Sylvia Boorstein. We had a beautiful contemplative shabbat
service where we engaged in wonderful text study. The
weekend was fi lled with wonderful teaching from faculty
including Rabbi Geller, Rabbi Rachel Cowan, Rabbi Lisa
Goldstein and Rabbi Marion Lev-Cohen. It was a real
opportunity for women to come together to learn from each
other and to deepen their own spirituality.
There will be two more opportunities in January for Temple
members to experience the Institute of Jewish Spirituality
Scholar-in-Residence
Anat Hoffman
Director, Israel Religious Action Center
February 3 at Shabbat Unplugged
Gender segregation on buses? Images of women erased
from public billboards? Economic inequity that led to the
tent cities over the summer? Meet the woman leading the
effort to challenge this and lead a new era in the pursuit of
social justice and equal rights in Israel. You’ve read about
her in the pages of the New York Times when she was
arrested for carrying a Torah scroll near the Western Wall
in Jerusalem; you’ve heard her on NPR speaking about the
tent cities this summer in Israel. Now you can meet her in
person.
Anat Hoffman is a major
leader for social justice in
Israel. She is perhaps best
known for never givingup,
even when faced with
seemingly insurmountable
obstacles. Anat was born and
raised in Jerusalem and she
served in the Jerusalem City
Council for 14 years, leading
the opposition to the right
wing and ultra-Orthodox
administration. She was a
founding member of Women
of the Wall and continues
to be a tireless advocate
for freedom of religion and women’s rights. In 2002, Anat
Hoffman became the Executive Director of the Israel
Religious Action Center (IRAC), the legal and advocacy arm
of the Reform Movement in Israel.
IRAC’s goals are to promote the values of religious pluralism,
human equality, social justice and religious tolerance in Israel
and to strengthen the public standing of the Israel Movement
for Progressive Judaism (Reform), its congregations and
institutions and to protect their rights.
Anat Hoffman will speak briefl y during services and again
after the oneg from 9:15–10:15PM
of our religious and spiritual experiences for over 60 years. This
started with experiences in our early youth, has continued all the
way through many life cycles, and now extends to both our son and
Making
Connections
Are you a single parent? Would you like to be in a group
with other single parents? Are you newly married?
Would you like to meet other families with school-age
children?
Chavurah (friendship) groups are forming now for all
ages and interests. A chavurah meets regularly (every
4-6 weeks) and people often form life-long friendships
Some chavurot (plural of chavurah) share Jewish
holidays together, attend concerts, have barbecues,
or work together on synagogue projects. Being in a
chavurah is often the best way to get to know other
people and form meaningful relationships. Please email
Leslie Shlecter at Chavurah@tebh.org if you would like
to be included or have any questions.

TEMPLE TOPICS /// JANUARY – FEBRUARY 2012 (27)

A Warm Welcome
to Marlene Canter,
Temple Emanuel's New
Chaplaincy Intern
I’m Marlene Canter, your
chaplaincy intern this year
at Temple Emanuel. I am a
student at the Academy of
Jewish Religion, California.
Before beginning on this
path, I worked in the fi eld of
education. I began teaching
in the 70’s as a special
education teacher at Alta
Loma Elementary School and
worked for eight years in the
classroom teaching autistic
children, as well as serving as
a resource specialist in several
other districts. It was at that
time that my former husband
and I wrote a book for teachers called Assertive Discipline.
This book served as the foundation for a business we began
training teachers in areas that would make them more
successful in the classroom. We ran the company for twentyfi
ve years, then sold it to Sylvan Learning in 1998.
In 2001, I decided to run for the LAUSD School Board. I
served two terms representing children and their families on
the Westside and in the West Valley and decided not to
run for a third term. I retired from public service in 2009.
I realized, however, that something was still calling me to a
different kind of service. Surprisingly, given my very secular
background, it was a calling to deepen my Jewish roots and
discover what Judaism means to me. This yearning led me to
the Academy of Jewish Religion and it’s chaplaincy program.
Chaplains have traditionally ministered to people in
hospitals, prisons, and hospices. I see my chaplaincy
through a slightly different lens. Throughout my career I
have experienced ‘chaplaincy’ moments occurring everyday.
What I mean by that is what we all experience on a daily
basis many challenging moments. Oftentimes we feel alone
in our struggles however big or small. Chaplains offer
solace through their presence to create connections that
oftentimes are not available in our day to day interactions.
Jewish Chaplains offer pastoral care which is also based on
Jewish texts and prayer.
I feel very privileged to be interning at Temple Emanuel
under the guidance of our clergy, and in particular Rabbi
Geller. I will be working with members of the congregation
including the elderly and the sick as well as with congregants
whom other needs. I am delighted to be part of the Temple
Emanuel community.
Beginning in January I will be leading a group, with
congregant Renee Brook for congregants that are dealing
with their aging parents. Many of us have experienced the
joy and the challenge of our aging parents and I am looking
forward to creating a support network that will deal with
this issue. The fi rst meeting will be on January 25 from 7:30-
9:00PM. The location will be at a congregant's home and the
address will be given when you register for the group.
I feel very fortunate to have been placed at Temple Emanuel
for my Chaplaincy internship. I will be participating in many
of the Temple Emanuel activities and I look forward to
meeting you.
Pillar members, the “Pillars” of our Temple community, voluntarily contribute an additional amount above full dues. The Pillar program is
a signifi cant source for the Temple’s support and it enables us to provide important programs and services for our members. Our Pillar
members have all the benefi ts of full membership, and they also receive a Pillar Pass with priority entrance and seating for High Holy Days
and complimentary parking. They are invited to special select events during the year as guests of Temple Emanuel, have their names
displayed in the foyer of the Sanctuary, and receive special acknowledgement in our Annual Report.
If you are interested in becoming a Pillar member, please call Tova Joffe Larsen at 310.288.3742 x508
