Mazamas mission is to
provide a comprehensive
climbing program with
allied activities that
enhance and protect the
participants and the
environment.
Capital Campaign News
When we first moved to the area we lived in an
apartment that had a beautiful view of Mt. Hood. We
often said to each other that some day we should climb
it. Being from the Midwest, our experience with mountains
was nil. However, we did have plenty of experience
with snow and cold weather. A friend of ours, who
had just completed the BCEP and had climbed Mt.
Hood, suggested we sign up for it the next year. That
was 15 years ago. We did and have been Mazamas ever
since.
When we heard that a new home for the Mazamas
was needed, we didn’t hesitate to contribute. The
Mazamas have been like a family to us over the years.
They have provided us a sense of community. We have
attended many classes and other functions at the present
business office. It has always felt like coming
home. It has been, to paraphrase from the old sitcom
Cheers, a place “… where everyone knows your
name.” We want that sense of community to be available
to future generations of climbers. We hope our
contribution will make the Mazama Mountaineering
Center a reality.
outstanding. As a consequence, we have retained Smith & Co. to assist
us with our fund-raising efforts, and they will begin work immediately.
Wildflower Identification Hike
What’s the name of that little blue flower? Why is it growing
on this slope and not in the valley below? That white one
looks like what I have growing in my garden. Are they related?
Join us on a free wildflower identification and appreciation
hike Sat., April 30. Amateur botanist Barry Maletzky
will lead us on an easily-paced hike up Dog Mountain at the
height of the flower season. We will hike up the steeper west
side and then loop down the east trail, of course enjoying
many stops to inspect the flora and learn about the names of
the plants, how they received their names, their relationships
to other plants in our mountains and to familiar plants in
our gardens back home. Meet at 8:30 a.m. at Gateway or
9:45 a.m. at the Dog Mountain Trailhead. Forest Service
Pass required at the trailhead.

MAZAMAS EXECUTIVE COUNCIL SPECIAL MEETING
February 25, 2005
Attending: Wendy Carlton, Sam Nebel, Marty Hanson, Keith
Dubanevich, Terri Cummings, Eugene Lewins, Gary Beck, Lori Freeman,
Harold Crawford, Peggie Schwarz.
Wendy Carlton called the meeting to order at 12:05 p.m. The
meeting was adjourned just after 1 p.m. The purpose of the meeting
was to discuss some recent developments regarding the Capital
Campaign
Keith Dubanevich reported that he and co-chair Eugene Lewins
were recommending that the Mazamas retain experts in fundraising.
Keith outlined the success of the campaign so far and the need to develop
a more coordinated and professional approach to fundraising. In
the prior few weeks, Eugene, Keith and Peggie Schwarz have met with
and interviewed two candidates for the position. A written proposal
was obtained from Smith & Co.
After extensive discussion and debate it was moved that Council
approve the request to retain Smith & Co. subject to the following: 1)
incorporation into the contract a requirement of at least quarterly performance
evaluations by the co-chairs of the campaign, Peggie and
Wendy Carlton; 2) that the terms of the contract be acceptable to the
co-chairs of the campaign and the executive members of Council and
include a requirement of detailed billing; and 3) that acceptable references
be obtained. The motion was seconded, and there was a unanimous
vote to approve the motion.
Old-Timers Activities
25 years or more of Mazama membership
Wednesday, April 27. We’ll walk along the Columbia enjoying
the awesome views up and down the river and the great variety
of birds that are visible and active at this time of year. There will
be lots of wildflowers to see, too. It is fun to try to identify both
birds and flowers, so bring your binoculars and reference books.
We’ll have lunch in a cozy restaurant in Washougal after the
hike and then visit the Pendleton Mills Outlet Store in search of
fabulous clothing bargains.
Leader: Flora Huber (503) 658-5710. Meet for carpooling at
10 a.m. at the northwest corner of the big K-Mart parking lot at
N.E. 122nd and Sandy Blvd. in Portland.
Thursday, May 26. Meet in the banquet room of J.J. North’s
Grand Buffet at N.E. 105th and Halsey at 11:30 a.m. It’s just a
few blocks east of the Gateway MAX station. Bring your
friends, they are always welcome!
There is going to be a special program you won’t want to
miss! Betty Parker will re-live for us a wonderful Mazamas outing
that went to Nepal in 1979. It was led by Bob Pierce who
has been a member since 1956. Betty was part of the outing and
took beautiful slide pictures as they trekked the Annapurna massif
and crossed over 17,771-foot-high Thorung La. They even
detoured from New Delhi to Agra in India to see the Taj Mahal.
Betty is no stranger to high peaks, since joining the Mazamas in
1949, she has received the 16 Major NW Peaks climbing award.
For directions to the restaurant or information, call (503) 254-
9465 or (503) 293-6304.
We are saddened to report that Helen Wirtanen passed away
March 10 in her home at Calaroga Terrace. A member since
1952, she had many friends and will be greatly missed.
‘Mazamas’ Founding Principals’
In 1966, the Long Range Planning Committee (yes, they had one
then too!) established the Philosophy Subcommittee and directed the
committee to review the Mazamas to make sure the 72-year-old organization
had remained true to its founding principles. The subcommittee
concluded that the founding principles had been held to: mountain
climbing and directly related activities were the main focus of the
Mazamas when founded in 1894, and continued to be the driving
principle in 1966.
The committee also noted that the Mazamas had experienced gradual
but enduring growth. I quote from the report “Growth that might
be compared to that of a sequoia that has not reached ultimate maturity.
The guiding light to the organization’s exisitence and its ability to
attract devoted members must be more than just the climbing of
mountains. Perhaps it is mountaineering fellowship that is the key? Is
not fellowship then a potent part of the Mazama philosophy — fellowship
activated by a common ideal?”
Mountain climbing, related activities, and fellowship — rich principles
indeed!
More than 111 years later we are still like the sequoia — strong,
deeply rooted, growing slowly, continuing to thrive and flourish —
continuing to gain members through a shared set of principles, interests
and goals. We climb mountains, we hike, we support conservation
and research projects, we conduct unique educational programs, we
train leaders, we protect our history, we laugh together, and we celebrate
together. We support each other’s successes and mourn each
other’s losses. Is this not true fellowship?
After reading the 1966 report I dug out my copy of our current
strategic plan and was delighted to find that many of the founding
ideals and principles are repeated in our current strategic plan. We have
held to the ideals that served the Mazamas so well for the first 70 years,
we have continued to grow and thrive in the last 50 years, and as we
make decisions about our programs and our goals, we will always go
back to that map, to that set of principles that have proved their value
and their enduring strength. If we do this, I know that in a hundred
years the Mazamas’ president will write an another article, similar to
this one, celebrating the rich legacy and history of the Mazamas.
New Reserve Collection at the Mazama
Library – Climbing Guidebooks
With the arrival of the summer climb schedule, many of us are starting
to research routes for our upcoming adventures. Now, the frustration
of stopping by the library for the one key route description or
photo you need and finding it’s been checked out is (mostly) a thing of
the past. The Mazama Library now has a reserve collection of the most
popular guidebooks that will always be available. The books will be on
the main floor (not in the library), so just ask any staff member if you
need one. Again, these books do not circulate, so please keep them here
so we all can use them. (We also have circulating copies of many of
these titles, so if you want to check one you usually can.)
We currently have these titles available:
• Cascade Alpine Guide Volume 1,2 and 3, by Fred Beckey
• Oregon High, by Jeff Thomas
• Climbing Washington’s Mountains, by Jeff Smoot
• Selected Climbs in the North Cascades Volume 1 and 2, by
Nelson and Potterfield
• 75 Scrambles in Oregon, by (our own) Barbara Bond
• 75 Scrambles in Washington, by Peggy Goldman
• Washington’s Highest Mountains, by Peggy Goldman
• A Climber’s Guide to the Olympic Mountains, by Olympic
Access Committee
The Access Committee needs you! Please join me in making the
Access Committee active once more. We have a number of issues
that need our attention. One topic of interest to many members is
the continuing effort to preserve the Madrone Wall area. On
March 15 the Clackamas County Board of Commisioners held a
disposition meeting on the “Hardscrabble Quarry” — as they call
the area. The 45-acre area also known as the Madrone Wall,
which is just east of Carver, is home to a distinctive cliff face and
its namesake trees. Additionally the area is a unique wildlife and
plant habitat. The Mazamas Access Committee is working with
local nonprofits to insure that our interests are being represented
as the commissioners consider all the angles while deliberating.
Watch for further updates on the Madrone Wall.
The annual Adopt-a-Crag cleanup at Rocky Butte will be held
in the coming months. Coordinated with The Access Fund, this is
a great way to give a little back to an area of such educational and
recreational importance to the Mazamas. These are just a fraction
of the important issues the Access Committee is working on.
For more information on Access, or to join — please contact
me. I look forward to the challenges of the upcoming year as we
work to be strong advocates for our outdoor pursuits. Send me
e-mail at: access@mazamas.org.
Thank you,
Barbara I. Bond, Mazamas Access Committee chair
Mazamas Aid Madrone Wall Preservation
Thank you, Mazamas, for your outstanding recent support including
a $2000 grant from the Executive Council that was drawn partially
from the Becker Fund. This was a big shot in the arm and it
will help the Madrone Wall Preservation Committee (MWPC)
continue our work toward preventing the site from being
destroyed as a quarry or housing development, and re-establishing
recreational access including rock climbing and establishing
permanent protective status as a park or open space.
On March 15, a study session was held in Clackamas
County between Clackamas County Commissioners and
County Park managers. Several interested community representatives
and conservation activists attended this session
including fellow Mazamas Barbara Bond, chair of the Access
Committee; Joan Zuber, member of the Conservation Committee
(and vice chair of South Clackamas Community Planning Organization-CPO);
Kellie Rice, regional coordinator, western Oregon, The
Access Fund; and me. The session outcome directed the County Parks
Department and its citizen-led Parks Advisory Board (PAB) to conduct
meetings with community organizations and other interested parties
over this coming spring and summer. By late October, the
PAB will make a recommendation for the future use of this
publicly-owned property to the commissioners. The commissioners
will evaluate the recommendation and then make
decisions about the future of the Madrone Wall. We saw
encouraging signs and have guarded optimism that the site
could receive protective park status and once again be open
to future outdoor recreation.
Outstanding community momentum is developing to support
preservation of this amazing civic treasure, especially in
light of the increasing pressures of nearby urbanization in the
newly incorporated city of Damascus. In the past three
months, the MWPC has presented to and extensively discussed the
CLIMB GRADES
Climbs are graded to indicate approximate experience and/or ability levels
required. Grades are:
A — May require off-trail hiking, ice axe and crampon use on moderately
steep slopes, and self-arrest.
B — May require off-trail hiking, ice axe and crampon use on moderately
steep slopes, self arrest, glacier travel, and roped climbing.
C — May require off-trail hiking, ice axe and crampon use on moderately
steep snow slopes, self arrest, glacier travel, and crevasse rescue
skills, belaying, rappelling, and low 5th-class rock climbing.
D — Ice axe and crampon use on steep snow slopes, glacier travel and crevasse
rescue, self-arrest, belaying, rappelling and 5th-class rock climbing.
E — Multi-pitch technical routes same as “D,” with high degree of selfsufficiency
and proficiency using technical skills under high exposure,
sharing high angle leads, setting protection and anchors.
SIGNING UP FOR A CLIMB
Sign-up for a climb is by applying directly to the climb leader. “A,” “B”
and “C” grade sign-up is by mail only, using an “Application for Climb”
card (see below). “B” and “C” climb applicants should list recent climbing
experience in spaces provided.
“D” and “E” grade sign-up is by telephone with individual climb leaders.
If accepted, most “D” and “E” leaders will then require an “Application
for Climb” card. If telephone contact with leaders is not possible,
applicants may send letters including thorough listings of experience, formal
instruction, etc. with the climb card. Climb leaders’ addresses and
telephone numbers are on page 10 of the schedule.
To apply, fill out the card and mail in an envelope to the climb leader.
(DO NOT return it to Mazamas). Make sure the return postcard portion
of the card has proper postage affixed along with YOUR address.
ADVANCE SIGN-UP PERIOD
In order to give each applicant the same time frame in which to apply for
climbs, applications may not be mailed to leaders prior to April 15.
Applications mailed prior to that date will either be refused or the applicant
placed on an alternate list.
MULTIPLE APPLICATIONS FOR THE SAME ROUTE
During the advance sign-up period, applicants may apply for only
one climb of the same grade on each peak chosen. Applicants
applying for more than one climb of the same grade on the same
peak either will not be accepted or become an alternate on climbs
of that peak after the earliest climb applied for, whether or not
2005 Summer Climb Guidelines
www.mazamas.org
accepted on the earlier climb.
CLIMB APPLICATION CARDS
“Application for Climb” cards are sold at Mazamas business office, by
mail or by telephone using a credit card. Cost of the card constitutes the
climb fee. Member Cards: $15.00; Nonmember Cards: $25.00. To order
cards by mail:
Mail check or money order for total amount to Mazamas, 909 NW 19th
Avenue, Portland, OR 97209.
CANCELLATIONS AND REFUNDS
If unable to participate on a climb after having been accepted, notify the
climb leader immediately. “No shows” and those who cancel at the last
moment deprive others of the opportunity to climb. IF YOU CANCEL
AFTER HAVING BEEN ACCEPTED, YOUR CLIMB FEE IS NOT
REFUNDABLE. If the climb is canceled or does not leave the trailhead,
climb fees are refunded.
CLIMB PROSPECTUS
A prospectus is mailed to each party member by the climb leader
about two weeks prior to the climb. It will contain such information
as names/addresses of party members, equipment required, description
of the route, experience required, travel instructions, meeting
place, etc.
TRANSPORTATION
Transportation to and from the mountain is the responsibility of individual
party members. Leaders will include a list of party members as an
aid to arranging car pooling.
CLIMB REGULATIONS
In case of accident, illness, or other incapacity, a climber must pay for
his/her own medical and/or evacuation expenses, whether or not he/she
has specifically authorized them. Note that all Mazama members have
rescue insurance.
Pets, firearms, alcoholic beverages and radios (other than ham radio
transmitters or weather radios) are not permitted on climbs or in base
camps. No one will be permitted on the climb who has taken or used
substances (including medication) which impair performance or judgment.
Climbers 17 years of age or under must furnish the climb leader with
a written parental or guardian permission slip. Climbers 14 years of
age or under must be accompanied on the climb by an adult responsible
for them, who shall be required to remain with them for the entirety
of the climb or descend with them. Neither the leader nor the assistant
leader of any climb shall be the responsible adult for a climber 14
years of age or younger. If the “responsible adult” descends, all
climbers for whom he/she is responsible shall be required to descend
as well.
Wilderness Steward Program! The Mazamas are entering the
sixth season of our partnership with the US Forest Service to
promote this great program. Rangers Mary Ellen Fitzgerald
and Sue Brun will train us in Leave No Trace principles. We
will then be well equipped to hike into the Mt. Hood, Salmon-
Huckleberry and the Hatfield wildernesses to talk to campers
and hikers about wilderness ethics and LNT practices. If you
can’t hike or backpack there are opportunities to do community
outreach with church groups, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and
school groups in a classroom setting. Training and teaching
tools are provided. Other activities that are planned for 2005
include invasive plant pulling, revegetation projects and help
with watering newly planted areas.
Wilderness Steward Update
This program has been well received by the outdoor community
and the personal rewards are great. Teaching others, especially
young people, how to tread lightly and leave no evidence
of their visit in the wilderness is tremendously satisfying. If you
have wanted to do more backpacking, do some community
service, or just give back to this wonderful mountain in our
backyard, this program is for you. For more information go to
BARK Hike to the NE Side of Mt. Hood
Sunday, April 10, at 8:45 a.m. Carpools will leave the Daily Grind
(SE Hawthorne & 40th) promptly at 9 a.m. Please arrive by 8:45 a.m.
Enjoy an exploration to one of Mt. Hood’s most popular and threatened
recreation areas on the northeast side of Mt. Hood. The Pollalie
Cooper timber sales, which encompass 865 acres, sit adjacent to the
Tilly Jane roadless area, home of the historic Tilly Jane Trail leading up
about the community restoration vision for this area—as opposed to
the development vision of Mt. Hood Meadows, and the logging vision
of the US Forest Service. For the hike, bring warm clothing (scarf, hat,
Conservation Committee Outing
Held on March 12, 2005
The Conservation Committee outing to Circle Creek was very successful
and informative. Seven volunteers: Debbie Meisinger, Barry Buchanan,
John Hawthorne, Stefan Hauser, Virginia Keefer, Vik Anantha and Neal
Keefer were treated to a most educational and recreational day. We met
Doug Ray, an enthusiastic and knowledgeable wetlands biologist. Doug
gave us a multi-hour lesson on riparian ecosystems and a taste of the
complexity of the interdependencies of healthy natural forests, the
streams they support and the salmon who populate healthy streams.
Doug is a fun guy with incredible passion for his work. His enthusiasm is
very contagious, and his running dialog was truly educational.
The North Coast Land Conservancy recently bought nearly 400
acres along Circle Creek, which runs along the East side of Tillamook
Head and is a major tributary of the Necanicum River. About 100
years ago the property was cleared of its big spruce trees and turned
into grazing lands. The work we did was to plant native bushes and
trees in a former grazing meadow adjacent to the creek. This work supports
NCLC’s plan to reestablish the original forest and rebuild the
riparian zones along the creek, in an effort to help restore native Coho
Salmon populations. It was very humbling and gratifying to be part of
this restoration.
Our crew was so effective we finished the planting work well ahead
of schedule, so we had time to clean up an old scrap metal and glass
dump site from an otherwise beautiful spruce forest glen, carpeted with
moss, oxalis and skunk cabbage in full bloom.
Our reward for the morning’s work (as if the work was not reward
enough) was a guided tour of the amazing wetlands spruce forest
downstream of our planting site, followed by a very adventurous and
vigorous scramble on Tillamook head. It was a perfect day weather
wise and left us all with a feeling of great satisfaction and accomplishment.
Many thanks to the volunteers!
