Conservation Grant Recipients
The Conservation Committee is excited to announce this year's Conservation Grant
recipients. There was tough competition this year, with 15 grant proposals requesting
a total of $63,500, and only $15,000 to give. The following local conservation
organizations will be receiving grants:
1. Cascade Resource Advocacy Group (CRAG): The Conservation Committee's top
priority this year has been actively opposing the development of the Cooper Spur Area
on the NE side of Mt. Hood. CRAG is a public interest law firm that has been hired to
represent the numerous groups, including Mazamas, that have banned together to fight
the expansion of the Cooper Spur Inn, the Cooper Spur Ski Area and adjacent forestland
recently acquired by Mt. Hood Meadows Development Corporation.
CRAG has been granted a total of $5,000, $3500 in grant money and $1500 from
the Ellis Fund (a special conservation fund bequeathed to the Conservation Committee).
This money will be used by CRAG to carry forward with the Cooper Spur Wild and Free
Campaign (see www.cooperspur.org for more information). The money will be used
for indirect litigation costs, monitoring of timber sales, community organizing and
outreach.
2. Tillamook Rainforest Coalition: Protecting the Tillamook State Forest is another
important issue for the Conservation Committee. The Tillamook Rainforest Coalition's
mission is to inspire Oregonians to protect the health of the Tillamook, to provide clean
drinking water, abundant fish and wildlife, recreational opportunities, livable
communities and healthy economies today, for tomorrow.
The Coalition has been granted $1,000 to lead and promote hikes throughout the
Tillamook State Forest as part of their outreach efforts.
3. WaterWatch: WaterWatch of Oregon is dedicated to protecting and restoring
natural flows in Oregon's rivers by working for environmentally sound water laws,
policies, and practices. WaterWatch requested grant money to promote rules to protect
the Deschutes River from being depleted by groundwater pumping. The Deschutes River
flows from the Cascade Mountains down through Oregon's high desert, and offers
beautiful scenery and excellent recreational opportunities, including fly-fishing,
whitewater boating, and hiking. Unfortunately, much of the Deschutes Basin is
intensively irrigated. Agriculture accounts for over 90 percent of water withdrawals,
and in the summertime irrigation diversions leave very little water in the river and its
tributaries which is destructive to fish and wildlife in the area. In addition to the
irrigation, explosive population growth is taking its toll on river levels.
WaterWatch was granted $2,000 to protect the Deschutes from groundwater
pumping.
4. Friends of Columbia Gorge: For over 20 years, Friends has been building broad,
ongoing support for the protection of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.
This year, Friends requested funds to upgrade their public outreach tools.
The Conservation Committee granted Friends $1,000 to update their 2003 Hiking
Program brochure.
5. Oregon Zoo's Urban Nature Overnights (UNO): UNO provides outdoor recreational
opportunities to underserved youth aged 8-11. The goals of UNO are to introduce basics
of camping and outdoor recreation, increase understanding, enjoyment, and respect of
the natural world, and inspire the next generation of recreational enthusiasts and
natural area stewards.
The Conservation Committee liked the idea of supporting a program that is
educating potential future Mazamas! UNO was granted $1,000 to help fund an
overnight camping trip to Camp Westwind on the Oregon Coast.
6. Center for Environmental Equity (CEE): CEE works to stop mining degradation of
public lands, water, and wild places. CEE is the only Oregon group to prioritize
withdrawing public lands from new mining claims and cleaning up abandoned and
inactive mines.
CEE requested $1,000 for continued support (Mazamas granted CEE $1,500 in
2001) of the public information and education components of its report regarding case
studies of inactive and abandoned mines in southern Oregon. A grant of $1,000 was
approved.
7. Rogue Group of the Oregon Chapter Sierra Club: This group has spent over a decade
working to prevent expansion of the Mt. Ashland ski area into a pristine roadless area,
sensitive habitat for at-risk species, and a critical watershed providing drinking water
for the city of Ashland. Recently, the Forest Service issued a Draft Environmental Impact
Statement (EIS) regarding the proposed expansion that was withdrawn (a second time)
after receiving fifty-five pages of comments from the Rogue Group and 1,500 comment
letters from the public in opposition to the expansion. A new Draft EIS will be issued
this summer. Based on the Rogue Group's successes so far in preventing the ski area
expansion, the Group believes that the continued demonstration of public opposition to
the expansion will cause the Forest Service to finally withdraw the project and/or
choose the "no action alternative" in the Final EIS stopping the expansion.
The Rogue Group applied for a grant to support a direct mail campaign that will
include a mail piece with an attached postcard that will serve as the official public
comment to the Forest Service second Draft EIS. The Conservation Committee granted
the Group $2,000 for their direct mail campaign.
8. Bark: Bark watchdogs federal land agencies to make sure they manage the forests
in the public interest. Bark leads field trips to proposed timber sales to gather
information about important natural characteristics that would be destroyed by
logging, and to monitor compliance with existing forest practices laws. Bark is one of
the many organizations that is opposed to the Cooper Spur development.
Bark submitted a grant request to help support its field trips through training
others to lead these trips and to continue maintaining its database of timber sales on
our public lands. Bark was granted $3,500 to support this program.
L O D G E N O T E S
I would like to thank Jim Gregory for donating a brand new microwave
to the lodge and for spending a lot of time digging out firewood for us this
winter. Also a huge thank you to the folks who have come up and helped us
with downed timber. Stan Enevoldsen came up early with chain saw and
truck and “the skill and know how” to get a lot of wood out of some large
tree tops and whole trees that came down and wedged themselves nicely
between other large healthy trees. Oh yes, and then he cut it all up, moved
it and stacked it. . . whew! A bit later he was joined by Jim Hendricksen, a
member and Arborist from Oregon City who brought his commercial chipper
up, and his fun and talented daughter, Karen showed me how this amazing
machine works. They cleared a lot of downed limbs and entire tree tops and
cut up a bunch of wood for us. It's nice to have some of the forest fuel that
was close to the lodge cleared away. Gayle Brauner came up the following
weekend and worked very hard. Without these four troopers, it wouldn't
look this good—and it was great getting to know them. Thank you!
EXCLUSIVE USE DATES: Tuesday and Wednesday—August 6-7 .
and 20th will be the First Aid weekend. This is not an exclusive use event,
however this group needs pretty much the whole lodge for the weekend.
We can bunk a few additional, but day use space will be limited as they will
be using the lodge for training. DINING ROOM HELP IS NEEDED FOR ANY OF
THE UPCOMING EXCLUSIVE USE DATES. IF YOU HAVE ANY INTEREST IN
HELPING AT A NICE EVENT, PLEASE CALL ME. YOUR VOLUNTEER HELP HERE
AT THE LODGE REALLY HELPS THE CLUB BY KEEPING OUR OPERATING COSTS
LOWER. IT'LL BE FUN. . . COME ON UP.
Thank you, Ruth McNitt Justen, for the linen napkins you sent us. This
is twice now that Ruth has come to the rescue through the lodge want ads.
Speaking of want ads, we are still in need of a couch. The couch in the
basement has officially bit the dust and we need to put it to rest. Also any
white table linens could be put to use up here.
Thank you to Kelly Harrison, Steve Bauer, and Dan Dewey for hosting
for me so I could take a little time off in July. As you can see, the rest of the
summer is non-stop. Come on up, roll your sleeves up and you might enjoy
seeing how this place works. Thanks everybody. Sincerely, Lisa Davis
Kate McCarthy — Honorary Member
The term "environmental activist" scarcely describes the energetic
work of Kate McCarthy, daughter of 1912 lifetime Mazama member
Homer Rogers. Photographer, speaker, organizer, writer, she has
undertaken insurmountable challenges and made them surmountable.
She has reasoned with uninterested heads and captured their interest.
She has taken thousands of photos and given a hundred slide shows to
call for environmental justice and responsibility.
Her concerns and activities have been focused on the Columbia River
Gorge, the Hood River Valley and on Mt. Hood, near which she has lived
much of her life. She has been on several boards and commissions
where she has effectively drawn attention to the environmental effects
of their decisions.
On the Oregon Columbia River Gorge Commission she was instrumental
in arguing for federal, not bi-state management in the proposed
scenic area act. She was a founding member of the Hood River Valley
committee formed to support protection of the valley's agricultural
resources.
But Kate's most visible influence has been her 30-year watchdog role
over the relentless growth aspirations of a Mt. Hood ski resort. She has
photographed their violations and destructive practices on National
Forest lands. This has provided Mazamas and other groups with
material upon which formal appeals of the operation's expansion plans
have been based.
Mazamas are grateful to Kate McCarthy for her environmental
perseverence. We will welcome her as our newest Honorary Member at
our November Annual Banquet. -Vera Dafoe
Candidates for Executive Council
The 2002 Nominating Committee appointed by the Executive Council
nominated the following individuals for election to the Executive Council
to replace the three current members whose terms will expire September
30. The information contained herein was supplied by the individuals
and is unedited. The Annual Meeting and election will be held the first
Monday in October.
Name: Wendy Carlton — member since 1994
Committee Participation: Financial Affairs 1999-present (chairperson
2000-present). Community Relations,2002 (chairperson)
Activity Participation: Climb Leader, 2000-present. Basic Climbing
School Group Leader, 2001-02. Attended Intermediate and Advanced
Rock Classes, Attended First Aid Class. Instructor, Basic School,
Intermediate School, First Aid Course and Advanced Rock.
Organizational Experience and Skills: Mazamas organization works
because of a group of committees who are intrinsic to the operations of
the club. They need support and information in a very autonomous and
independent organization structure. This is similar to an academic
department like the one I manage. I know how to support operations
and optimize results in an organizational structure like Mazamas.
Occupation: Administrator, Department of Psychiatry, Oregon Health
and Science University.
Personal Statement: When I lead a climb I tell the group that I have three
goals for the climb: #1) everyone returns safely, #2) every member of
the group should have the opportunity to push their own limits
physically or mentally; and a very close and important #3) that we
have fun. These goals reflect what I value as a member of the Mazama
organization. The activities that I enjoy as a member of Mazamas
provide me with personal challenges and a great deal of joy. I truly
value the experience of teaching others the skills to enjoy the outdoors
at a whole new level; the comradely and laughter that is shared during
a climb, outing, or class enhances every aspects of my life; the
opportunity to see and experience nature and the outdoors never fails to
inspire me. After a climb or a day of teaching climbing skills I return to
my “day job” refreshed, invigorated and ready to tackle the challenges
of everyday life. I would be honored to be a member of Mazamas
Executive Council because I believe in the organization and what it
offers and I want to do my part to ensure that it is around for a long,
long time and continues to offer these valuable experiences to many
more generations of climbs and outdoors enthusiasts.
Organizational Experience: Commodore of cruising group at Island
Sailing Club.
Skills: Many of the skills that I have learned as a manager and project
leader in my 23 years at Intel will be of value on Council. Among them:
the ability to articulate complex issues in a simple way, effective
negotiation skills, organizing and conducting effective meetings,
managing conflict, systematic problem solving, tolerance of ambiguity,
and decisiveness.
Occupation: Senior Software Engineer, Intel Corporation.
Personal Statement: In the last twelve years, Mazamas has been an
important part of my life. I am proud to belong to an organization with
such a rich history and sense of tradition. I want to zee the club
continue its thrust to bring twenty-first century tools and methods to its
operational environment while respecting its historical perspective and
traditional mountaineering values.
major part of my life, due to the friends I’ve made and the climbing
experiences that have challenged and enriched me. I look forward to
serving on Council and offering my experience in real estate, finance,
and money management as we move through the process of obtaining
and funding a permanent clubrooms location. I will also work to ensure
stable and sufficient resources for our schools and committees, so that
we continue to provide real value to our members, through climbing
opportunities, education, services and activities. And it’s vital that we
support and recognize the many volunteers whose time, energy, and
commitment make it all possible.
Organizational Experience: Boy Scouts - WEBELOS Den Leader.
Skills: Project Management, Planning, Negotiation, Management,
Operational Budgeting, Problem Solving, Personnel Development.
Occupation: Engineering Manager
Personal Statement: I enjoy the MAZAMAS and want to see the Club
continue to prosper. As one can see from my participation on
committees and activities, I am an active in helping the Club.
For the last year and a half, I have been chairman of the Long Range
Planning Committee. In that role, I have worked to help formulate a
path that the Club can take to be successful in the coming years. We
need a clear, common vision that we proceed from. I believe that vision
should include the purchase of a building for our clubrooms. But I’d like
our building to be more than a clubroom. I want it to be a center that
showcases our commitment to alpine climbing and education as well
as one that supports our activities in wilderness preservation. I also am
convinced that we need to examine the costs and benefits of the Lodge
and determine if we should include it in our vision. We need to
determine what we want and what we can afford.
Because of the probability of our lease not being renewed (see the April
Bulletin), we need to make a decision and have our plans in place for the
Clubroom facility in the next year. I believe that I can help make that
process a success if elected to Council.
Personal Statement: Climbing and the out-of-doors have been a huge
part of my life. Serving on the Executive council is consistent with my
life-long values, and a desire on my part to give back to a club that has
nurtured my love of the out-of-doors. Our club is in the process of
making plans regarding where and what our clubrooms will look like
when our lease at our present facility ends in 2005. I have extensive
experience working on committees and the Executive Council. Now is
a time I would like to put my experience to work. Recently retired, I
have time to participate in the decision making process, and do the
hard work which will be required. As a frequent participant in club
activities, I'm invested in maintaining and supporting our programs.
Personal Statement: I have enjoyed my membership in Mazamas for
over the last 10 years. Since joining, I’ve been very active every year
with the Basic Climbing Education Program. I really enjoy teaching and
helping people come together for a common cause, whether it is a
