FEAST OF THE HOLY FAMILY
Deacon Says Goodbye
To St. Olaf
These past five years have been a joy for
me to serve you, the St. Olaf Community.
Your support, kindness, and friendship
have meant so very much for me as I have
grown to better understand the needs of
such an amazing parish as St. Olaf.
We have done many things together that
will be fond memories for me as your
Deacon (Annual Celebrations of St. Olaf
Fund Raisers, Pancakes to Heaven Sunday
Reflections, Fish Stick Friday's, Advent
Journey to Bethlehem, Dead Sea Scrolls
bus trip with Sister Joan, to name a few
that have meant so much to me).
With all the needs of the diocese, I will be
reassigned in the near future to another
parish.
I thank Fr. Mark for opening his heart and
support as I have grown in service and
preaching.
I will keep you in my prayers and hope
you do the same for me as I continue
to respond to
the call of Christ
to serve his
amazing Church.
Christmas Blessings Shared —
Thank You for Your Donations for Exodus Gift Bags
and Our St. Olaf Christmas Shop for Families in Need
Thank you for responding to the needs of poor families, and
women and men who live at the Exodus Residence, next door
to St. Olaf. Your donations of winter gloves, hats, socks,
children’s toys, stockings, teen jewelry, soccer balls, family
games, dolls was a beautiful expression of your generosity
and gratitude. Your contributions have lightened the load for
families and brought smiles to faces! We are especially grateful
to our dedicated volunteers who sorted and wrapped gifts,
greeted guests and cooked a hearty meal. You enable our parish
to “serve as a living sign of Christ’s saving presence in the heart
of the city”.
New Envelope System
Electronic Giving Option
Please note that your electronic giving will
continue without interruption for the new year
unless you request that it be stopped. It will
be updated with your new pledge informa-
tion as well. There is no need to re-apply
for this option. If you would like to utilize electronic giving, please call
the parish office at 612-332-7471 and ask for an authorization form.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Beginning in January, 2013, we will be utilizing a new system for your
offering envelopes. The envelopes will be mailed to you monthly rather
than as one package each year. So often, the yearly packages have
been received and put away — and unfortunately, forgotten. The new
monthly system will provide for a more timely receipt and return of
your parish financial support. However, if you would like to use electronic
giving, we will be happy to set that up for you. Just call our office
612-332-7471 and ask for Annette. She will send you an
electronic giving application and information. At that point you may or
may not cancel your envelopes. If you wish, you may mark the envelope
showing you give electronically and put it in the collection basket.
If you have not been receiving offering envelopes, please feel free to
call the office and we will add you to the recipient’s list.
Volunteers Needed for St. Olaf’s
Social Outreach Program
St. Olaf Outreach ministry has several special volunteer opportunities
available. Daily volunteers are needed to assist guests with
their food, clothing, and transportation needs. When not meeting
with guests, volunteers sort and organize donations, along with
other special projects. Volunteer hours are available from 9:00
am to 2:00 pm on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. This is an
unique opportunity to live out your faith through relationships
with our brothers and sisters in need and our downtown
neighbors. Ongoing training is provided. If you are interested
in this ministry, contact Jean Thoresen, Assistant in Social
Outreach, for an application and to schedule a tour: 612-332-
FEAST OF THE
HOLY FAMILY
Weekend of
December 29-30
As we might expect on this Feast of
the Holy Family, the readings focus
on family matters. In fact, they offer
a blueprint for family stewardship.
The concept of stewardship within a
family is closely related to how family
members treat one another — how
they show respect and love for one
another.
The first reading from the Book of Sirach makes it quite clear that
children are called to honor, revere, care for, and be kind to their
father and mother. Of course, this is a manifestation of the commandment
with which we are so familiar — Honor thy Father and Mother.
Stewardship is synonymous with love. Thus, although the children are
called to love in this way, it is also strongly implied that the father
and mother are also called to love and revere one another and their
children.
“And Jesus advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and
man.” We do not know much about the life of Jesus between his birth
and the beginning of His ministry. We are presented with one vignette
of His youth, however, in the Gospel reading from Luke. Under
Jewish tradition a boy became a Bar Mitzvah (which means Son of the
Commandment) at the age of 13. Prior to that step into maturity and
adulthood a boy was expected to study, listen, and question at the
Temple one or two years earlier. That is what Mary and Joseph and
Jesus were pursuing in this Gospel passage — they were following the
customs of the day. About this time in His life we might say, “The
child became a man.”
The Holy Family is an ideal we as people cannot replicate. Nevertheless,
it is clear that family life, like the virtues of love and kindness and
humility and forgiveness, requires constant effort. Nothing in life is
necessarily easy. Being a unified and loving family has rewards beyond
our comprehension.
Something to Consider
For several years, St. Olaf has honored the requests of parishioners to
pre-plan their funeral arrangements. The benefits of pre-planning are
many. If you are interested or would like more information, contact
Gene Smith at St. Olaf, 612-332-7471 ext. 227 or email her at
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
The gifts of gold, frankincense, and
myrrh portend the universal significance
of the child Jesus. Myrrh, a
perfume used for burial, foreshadows
his death. Gold is a gift for
royalty, and frankincense signifies
holiness. They indicate that,
through his suffering and death,
Jesus will become both the afflicted
King, in whose service we are to
offer our gifts to the afflicted, and
the eternal Priest, whose sacrifice is
the source of atonement (at-onement)
for all humanity. The authors
of today’s Scriptures seem to
be super-sensitized to the harmony
in the world, and certain of the
goodness and oneness of all humanity.
All nations are depicted as
gathering as “members of the same
body” (Ephesians 3:6) to serve the
one and only Lord and King. No
longer do the magi feel obliged to
Herod or any power that would
separate them from the true
Source of at-one-ment — Christ
Jesus.
1. With what person do you least
feel a sense of “at-one-ment?”
2. When have you felt deeply connected
with others or with nature?
3. How do you think the experience
of the magi changed their lives?
the companionship of others who are also wounded by loss is
tremendously consoling and powerfully healing.
