DECEMBER 9, 2012<br />
SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT<br />
<strong>Is</strong> <strong>There</strong> <strong>Enough</strong> <strong>Silence</strong><br />
<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Word</strong> <strong>to</strong> Be Heard?<br />
by Sr. Joan Tuberty<br />
Two days ago, early in <strong>the</strong> morning, I had a very<br />
disorienting experience. I lost my keys! Although I<br />
was at St. <strong>Olaf</strong>, I could not enter through <strong>the</strong> door<br />
in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> spaces where I needed <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> do my<br />
work. I felt lost and helpless. As we try <strong>to</strong> enter in<strong>to</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Season of Advent in preparation <strong>for</strong> Christmas<br />
aren’t we also in need of some KEY <strong>for</strong> opening <strong>the</strong><br />
door in<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> mystery of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Word</strong> becoming flesh<br />
and pitching His tent in our very midst…God With<br />
Us! <strong>Silence</strong> and Stillness is considered such a key.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Gospel reading from St. Luke <strong>for</strong> this Second<br />
Sunday of Advent <strong>the</strong> words of <strong>the</strong> Prophet <strong>Is</strong>aiah<br />
are spoken again through John <strong>the</strong> Baptist. “A voice<br />
of one crying out in <strong>the</strong> desert. Prepare <strong>the</strong> way of<br />
<strong>the</strong> Lord, make straight his path!” This is <strong>the</strong> voice<br />
crying out of God’s incredible love and mercy, shining<br />
in <strong>the</strong> face of <strong>the</strong> Infant Jesus. It is not <strong>the</strong> voice<br />
shouting out in all <strong>the</strong> holidazzle about being first in<br />
line <strong>to</strong> buy! This voice crying out is heard in your<br />
own heart. It is <strong>the</strong> still, small voice that is heard<br />
when you find <strong>the</strong> key <strong>to</strong> open <strong>the</strong> inner chamber of<br />
your own soul. <strong>There</strong> at <strong>the</strong> door of your heart,<br />
God stands and knocks and if you but open, God<br />
will enter.<br />
I hope you will be as eager <strong>to</strong> find <strong>the</strong> true meaning<br />
of Christmas as <strong>the</strong> man pictured in <strong>to</strong>day’s paper,<br />
November 21, who pitched his tent two days be<strong>for</strong>e<br />
<strong>the</strong> opening of <strong>the</strong> doors <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black Friday sales at<br />
Best Buy so he could be first.<br />
St. <strong>Olaf</strong> <strong>Church</strong> and Chapel offer silence and stillness<br />
here in <strong>the</strong> heart of <strong>the</strong> city. Many persons come<br />
here <strong>for</strong> that reason. <strong>There</strong> is nothing you have <strong>to</strong><br />
buy <strong>for</strong> silence, only your willingness <strong>to</strong> let go <strong>for</strong><br />
awhile of <strong>the</strong> big and little things that fill your life so<br />
that you may open your mind and heart <strong>to</strong> receive<br />
<strong>the</strong> <strong>Word</strong> that is spoken in <strong>the</strong> silence.<br />
In <strong>the</strong> Feast of <strong>the</strong> Immaculate Conception on December<br />
8 <strong>the</strong> Annunciation Gospel from St. Luke is<br />
presented in which Mary is <strong>the</strong> prime example offered<br />
as <strong>the</strong> one who hears <strong>the</strong> word spoken <strong>to</strong> her<br />
and holds it with tenderness. May Mary intercede<br />
<strong>for</strong> us that we also may be able <strong>to</strong> respond as she<br />
did, “Yes, I am <strong>the</strong> handmaid of <strong>the</strong> Lord. May it be<br />
done <strong>to</strong> me according <strong>to</strong> your word!”<br />
<strong>Is</strong> <strong>the</strong>re enough silence <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> word <strong>to</strong> be heard?

or a gift <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> age group listed.<br />
You will also see ornaments<br />
labeled: Family Package. Each<br />
family registered <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> St. <strong>Olaf</strong><br />
Social Outreach Christmas Shop<br />
will receive a gift box filled with<br />
items. A handout with gift ideas<br />
is located by <strong>the</strong> tree but please<br />

Sunday’s Liturgy<br />
DECEMBER 16<br />
3rd Sunday of Advent<br />
FIRST READING:<br />
Zephaniah 3:14–18a<br />
RESPONSORIAL PSALM:<br />
<strong>Is</strong>aiah 12:2–3, 4, 5–6<br />
SECOND READING:<br />
Philippians 4:4–7<br />
GOSPEL:<br />
Luke 3:10–18<br />
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS<br />
Today’s readings are heavily<br />
laden with calls <strong>to</strong> be joyful.<br />
We’re beckoned by <strong>the</strong> prophet<br />
Zephaniah <strong>to</strong> “shout <strong>for</strong> joy.”<br />
Paul tells <strong>the</strong> Philippians <strong>to</strong><br />
“Rejoice in <strong>the</strong> Lord always!”<br />
Luke cites <strong>the</strong> message of John<br />
<strong>the</strong> Baptist as one of “good<br />
news.” This Sunday, often<br />
called Gaudete (“Rejoice”)<br />
Sunday, is our annual reminder<br />
that joy and laughter befit <strong>the</strong><br />
Christian much more than sadness<br />
and gloom. Whenever we<br />
show evidence of a sunrise<br />
ra<strong>the</strong>r than a sunset, we’re providing<br />
<strong>the</strong> world with evidence<br />
of <strong>the</strong> presence of God.<br />
1. If someone asked you what<br />
<strong>the</strong>re is <strong>to</strong> be joyful about in this<br />
world, what would you say?<br />
2. Many of our thoughts and<br />
beliefs are matters of folly. We<br />
foolishly think, <strong>for</strong> example, that<br />
we are perfect. Provide examples<br />
of thoughts and beliefs that are a<br />
matter of similar folly.<br />
3. Share some of <strong>the</strong> ways in<br />
which our faith gives us cause<br />
<strong>for</strong> joy!<br />
