THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT
Be Joyful! by Fr. Mark Pavlik
We are at the midpoint of Advent, the Sunday
known as Gaudete. This is the Sunday for rejoicing.
Advent is a time for joy, not only because we are
anticipating the celebration of the birth of Jesus, but
because God is already in our midst. That is what
the prophet Zephaniah proclaims in this Sunday’s
first reading. He is speaking to a people who have
been burdened with war and destruction and
displacement. Their lives have been assaulted and
their hopes have been dashed. In the face of this
the prophet directs them to “Shout for joy...Sing
joyfully...Be glad and exult.” How can they possibly
respond in this way?
The prophet assures them that with God in their
midst, they can indeed move forward into a new life.
In God’s presence they have nothing further to fear.
No longer do they stand under judgment, for they
will be renewed in God’s love. Are these empty
promises? Can this really come to pass? It was up
to Israel to decide whether they would turn to God
and trust in the promises made to them or continue
on the path they had set for themselves.
Unfortunately, our world is not terribly different
from theirs. It too is burdened with war and
destruction and displacement; lives have been
assaulted and hopes have been dashed. We are
probably as skeptical about peace and restoration as
were the ancient Israelites — perhaps even more.
However, this skepticism need not prevent us from
trusting that God will encircle us with love and will
grant us the peace we so desperately seek.
Paul also calls us to rejoice. In fact, he says that we
should rejoice always, because the Lord is near.
There is no contradiction here regarding God’s
presence. Paul did not think that Christ is absent
from our midst. Rather, he was speaking of Christ’s
final manifestation in glory. It is that time that is
near; hence there is reason for rejoicing. But notice
what else he says. In anticipation of that time of
fulfillment, he admonishes us: “Your kindness
should be known to all.” Though peace and
restoration are given to us by God, they do not
simply drop down from heaven. We are involved in
their fashioning. Still, we do not create this renewed
world — God does.
So friends, as we continue our Advent journey, in
the midst of wherever we are, be it good or bad,
joyful or fearful: today we REJOICE!

Oh, Baby! WEEK 39
I weigh about seven pounds and I am
about 21 inches long. Mom is getting
ready for me to be born soon, and so am
I! When I am ready, my body will release hormones to start my
Mom’s labor. Both of us can’t wait for me to be born, but we
have to, just a little while longer!
Watch the bulletin in the coming weeks and track my growth!
4:00 pm Mass on Saturday and both the 12:00 noon and
4:00 pm Masses on Sunday.
All will be given full training and support for these valuable
positions. In addition, we will work with your availability and
generosity of time as the service schedule is formed.
Now is the time to step out of the pew and answer this call.
Please contact Anne Susag at 612-332-7471 ext. 260 or
New Envelope System
Beginning in January, 2013, we will be utilizing a new system
for your offering envelopes. The envelopes will be mailed to you
monthly rather than as one package each year. So often, the
yearly packages have been received and put away — and
unfortunately, forgotten. The new monthly system will provide
for a more timely receipt and return of your parish financial
support. However, if you would like to use electronic giving,
we will be happy to set that up for you. Just call our office
612-332-7471 and ask for Annette. She will send you an
electronic giving application and information. At that point you
may or may not cancel your envelopes. If you wish, you may
mark the envelope showing you give electronically and put
it in the collection basket. If you have not been receiving offering
envelopes, please feel free to call the office and we will add you
to the recipient’s list.
DISCUSSION
QUESTIONS
Contrary to popular opinion,
God does not favor cataclysmic
events. God likes to sneak into
life in quiet ways. As Micah
proclaims today, it would be
from Bethlehem, “too small to
be among the clans of Judah,”
that our Savior would be born.
The two tiny infants mentioned
in the Gospel, infants still in the
wombs of Mary and Elizabeth,
are still affecting lives two thousand
years later. Something
small can have an unbelievably
powerful effect.
1. What are some ways and
examples of one person or one
act making a tremendous impact?
2. Why do you suppose God
decided to enter human life
quietly and in a small and seemingly
insignificant way?
3. Think of and share examples
of how something little or small
made a big difference in your life.
