The Blue Devils now look
to get an early 2-0 advantage
in the Big North with a home
contest against Traverse
City Central. Many believe
Gaylord is now the favorite
in the league.
"We've always been the
team to beat." said a confident
Wickert.
St. Mary (1-2,1-1 SkiValley
the first 28 minutes of the
game, jumping out to a 15-
6 first quarter lead behind
six points from junior Lauren
Reppuhn, and holding
strong at 27-18 at halftime
and 34-23 after the third.
"We played three very
good quarters against a
good team," Jacob said. "We
let it slip in the fourth, because
we didn't handle the
situation well. We need to
be able to close it out."
Senior Sarah Bauer led
the Snowbirds with 13
points, including the first
basket in overtime. Reppuhn
added 12 points,
while junior point guard
Grace Westerman added
eight. Foster chipped in six
points and six points in a
solid effort.
GAYpOKD—The first period
befeh kind to the
Gaylotd hockey team.
TWice this weekend, and
twice prior to that, the Blue
Devils fell behind big early
and were forced to play
catch-up.
And despite their best efforts
each time to battle back,
the result each time has been
predicatable — a Blue Devil
loss. This weekend, Gaylord
fell 5-3 to both No. 5-ranked
Dearborn Divine Child and
No. 6-ranked Flint Powers in
the Division 3 Hockey Challenge.
"This has been a nightmare,"
said Gaylord coach
Pete Wilkinson. "We've talked
and talked about it, and we
keep going out and doing exactly
that we don't want to
do. You can't spot a team two
or three goals. You expend so
much energy trying to come
back."
Saturday's battle with the
Chargers was the perfect case
and point. Powers scored on
the game's first three shots,
giving them a 3-0 advantage
just over two minutes into
the contest.
Then, senior Taylor Carey
was brought into the game
and he performed excellently.
not allowing the lead
to grow.
The No. 10-ranked Blue
Devils came out a different
team in the second, taking
control of the play and eventually
scoring on a beautiful
top-shelf goal by senior
Hunter Stier, who took a pass
from senior Jeff Birk.
Just moments later,
Gaylord took advantage of a
power play and netted a goal
on a wraparound play by senior
Gavin Palm.
Still charging hard, the
Blue Devils (2-4) took advantage
of their aggressiveness
just 30 seconds into the third
period, when junior Joey Zaborowski
flipped the puck
into the back of the Powers
net. Suddenly, Gaylord had
tied the game and was outplaying
the Chargers hand-
Uy.
"We didn't quit, the effort
was there," Wilkinson said.
"We just have to put together
a full game and execute our
game plan. We have to learn
what it takes to win big
games."
All four of the Blue Devils'
losses this season has come
against ranked teams.
That was the case Friday,
when Gaylord was overmatched
in the first two p>eriods
against Dearborn Divine
Child, and fell behind 4-0.
Gaylord again battled
back, with seniors Kyle Eckert,
Matt Zaremba and Birk
netting third-period goals to
cut into the defecit. Still, it
was too little, too late.
"It took us two periods to
decide to play," Wilkinson
said.
The road doesn't get any
easier for the Blue Devils this
weekend, with a home game
Friday against Traverse City
Gaylord 7-2. That is followed
by an away game at Sault Ste.
