What is the Most Popular Korean Products
among Japanese and Chinese Tourists?
Orion Market O Snacks and Seasoned Seaweed
Japanese and Chinese tourists are buying these snacks
the most when they visit Korea.
According to Lotte Mart, “the Orion Market O Real
Brownie” gift set was the number one product among
Japanese and Chinese tourists who visited the Seoul
Station Lotte Mart during the “golden week” (a ten day hol-
The full-fledged sales of exported
Korean apples started in the supermarkets
in the United States.
At the same time, the aT (Korea Agro-
Fisheries Trade Corporation) held
Korean Apple promotion events twice -
April 29~May 1 and May 6~8 - at four
LA branches of H-Mart. By carrying out
sampling promotions, the aT focused its
efforts on introducing consumers to the
crispy and sweet taste of Korean apples.
The total export amount of Korean
apples to the United States reached 54
tons after the Chungcheongbuk-do
the second position and was followed by seasoned seaweeds,
including “Yangban Gim,” from third to fifth. The recently
released Shin Ramyeon Black, the Crown Butter
Waffles, and Harim Samgyetang have also recorded big
sales volumes.
Compared to last year, the sales of snacks and instant
noodles have increased while those of jeotgal and kimchi
have declined somewhat.
The spokesperson for Lotte Mart said that “exports to
Japan have improved awareness of the Orion Market O
brand. We believe that many tourists buy the snacks because
the price of them in Korea is 20 percent lower than
in Japan.” Compared to last year, the number of foreign
visitors during this golden week rose 30 percent and the
number of purchases increased by 50 percent.
Korean Apples Sell in USA Market Kimchi Picked as
“Must-Eat Food”
The American online journal “Huffington
Post” selected Korean kimchi as one of
the top five “must-eat foods,” along with
rosemary, elderberry, kiwifruit, and curcumin.
On May 6, the journal published
an article entitled “Foods You Probably
Aren’t Eating - But Should.” It explained
that “kimchi’s superstar bacteria,
Lactobacillus, has been found to help reduce
gas, indigestion and bloating - it
may even reduce the number of yeast infections
and aid in weight loss.”
Exporting Cabbage to
Hong Kong and Singapore
To introduce Korean spring cabbages,
the aT organized promotion events in the
stores of big distribution companies -
JUSCO in Hong Kong on May 21 and
22, and NTUC in Singapore in late May.
A spokesperson of the aT said that “the
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture,
Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF) held a
proclamation ceremony for “King Nupchi
by the National Fisheries Research
and Development Institute (NFRDI).
The new breed grows 30 percent faster
than other breeds and has a strong immunity
against germs, viruses, and parasites.
For that, it was named “King” and
the Korean word for halibut - nupchi -
so we tried to resolve the export problem
and held Korean spring cabbage promotion
events.
Paprika
Peppers Are
Exported to
Canada
Korean paprika, a product that
greatly contributes to the country’s
exports, was exported to
Canada for the first time.
According to the aT, Korean paprika
was shipped to Canada on
May 16. This represents the efforts
to diversify export markets,
which are now leaning too heavily
on the Japanese market.
The latter takes 90 percent of
the entire Korean paprika export.
The aT has been working on expanding
the exports to Canada,
Australia, Taiwan, and other
countries.
Following the first export deal,
the aT held promotion events in
Canada, and plans to organize
several more large-scale events
in Australia and Taiwan to inform
local people about the advantages
of Korean paprika.
Wild Sea Mustard,
the Best Gift for Both Mother and Baby
Simple yet Scrumptious Taste and Soft Texture
Soup Gets Milkier with Longer Boiling
Perfect Food for Postnatal Care
In Korea, mothers who have just delivered a baby
are advised to eat miyeokguk (sea mustard
soup). This is because sea mustard contains iodine
that is believed to thin the blood, help contract
the dilated uterus after delivery, and make breast milk
flow well. In addition, the seaweed is rich in calcium
that is important for strengthening weakened bones
and in dietary fiber that prevents constipation - a
common irregularity for new mothers.
The entrenched Korean tradition to eat miyeokguk
on birthdays has much to do with this scientific wisdom
and emotional consolation. For Koreans birthdays
are not so much the day to receive congratulations,
as to remember and sympathize with the mothers
who went through so many pains during delivery.
So Koreans eat the meaningful soup and thank their
mothers.
Wild Sea Mustard Picked by Haenyeo
The Haemalgeun Beonyoung Marine Products
company takes the lead in promoting the unique
Korean postnatal food culture and exporting Korean
sea mustard as a healthy food to all mothers around
the world, irrespective of their home countries.
Haemalgeun offers prestigious sea mustard that is
picked by haenyeo (female divers who pick deep sea
aquatic life). The principle sea mustard-producing areas
are clean waters near the east coast around
Yeongdeok and Ulsan. The female divers first do gatdakki-
the wiping of rocks under the sea for sea mustard
to grow well - and later pick the seaweed stalks
one by one and dry them in the sun and sea breeze.
Although the sea mustard gathered in wild seas is
pricier than the farmed version, it is much tastier and
softer in texture and produces a whiter and richer
soup. That’s why consumers prefer the wild seaweed
to the farmed one. Furthermore, the wild sea mustard
contains more essential nutrients for mothers (such as
calcium, zinc, and alginic acid) than the seaweed of
watery farms. In other words, the wild sea mustard
outpaces the farmed one in terms of nutritional value.
The Haemalgeun seaweed has already won a reputation
for reliable quality and the marine product company
has recently started efforts to secure the image
of its products safety and credibility. To increase its
credibility in the international market, in 2002 it obtained
HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control
Product) certification and ISO 9001. In line with this
effort, it has also diversified the product line: the
small 30g, 100g, and 150g packages keep up with the
nuclear family trend. Thanks to these endeavors, the
company succeeded in entering the Japanese seaweed
market in 2005 and is now starting to expand its ex-
port markets to the United States and Mongolia.
Kim Boun-soon, CEO of Haemalgeun Beonyoung
Marine Products, explains that “in particular, sea
mustard is a must-have food for mothers after delivery
as the product is rich in calcium, iodine, and iron.
Haemalgeun will not stop its efforts to promote the
excellence of wild sea mustard and convince mothers
in other countries that they need Korea’s superb seaweed.”
Sea Mustard Basket out of Gratitude
The CEO of the company was designated as a new
seafood intellectual by the Ministry of Food,
Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MIFAFF) in
2010. Her baskets of sea mustard look like floral
arrangements and are trending these days. Wrapped
in Korean traditional paper and ribbons, the seaweed
baskets are designed to be used as presents on special
days like a birthday, childbirth, or a store-opening
day. This is an example of a brilliant idea in which
ordinary sea mustard has been reborn as a valueadded
gift item.
The beautifully adorned baskets are sold online at
www.bunyoung.co.kr. They sell particularly well for
first birthday parties and weddings. Koreans residing
abroad often feel nostalgia for their home country and
are showing a favorable response to the present baskets.
Confected Schizandra
Schizandra (fruit of Maximowiczia typica,
Omija in Korean) is a red fruit that at once
tastes sweet, sour, bitter, salty, and spicy.
Traditionally used in Oriental (Chinese) medicine, it
has recently come to the center of people’s attention
as a food. With the rise in public interest, the output of
schizandra production has also been increasing.
Mungyeong in Gyeongsangbuk-do, with 45 percent
of all the schizandra produced in Korea, is a major
schizandra production area. Mungyeong officials have
fostered the fruit as a regional specialty since 1996
and by now Mungyeong has become a representative
city of schizandra.
“Schizandra Confect” is one of the most famous
The Charm of Five Tastes
products of the Mungyeong area. The production
process involves 60 days of aging a mixture of fresh
schizandra with sugar. The product is widely used as
an ingredient in food and beverages.
Korean schizandra drinks have come in to the spotlight
on the world stage and received rave reviews. A
wine made of Mungyeong schizandra was selected as
the “Toast Drink” for the 2010 G-20 meeting in
Korea. Korea and France also used the omija schizandra
drink as an official beverage during their 120th anniversary
celebration of establishing diplomatic ties.
Sujinuri Foods Co.,Ltd in Mungyeong is an
schizandra processing company famous for producing
high-quality schizandra items with the technical sup-
port of the Rural Development Administration (RDA)
and Mungyeong Agricultural Technology Center -
two institutions for Korean agricultural technique development
and education.
The institutions are educating farmers about organic
farming technologies and farming ethics. The
Mungyeong Agricultural Processing Support Center
is also assisting farmers through technology transfers,
developing schizandra processed goods, creating
sample products, marketing, and management consulting.
Sujinuri Foods Co.,Ltd acquires high quality
schizandra under the contract cultivation and its products
are distributed under the brand name “Red In.”
According to Noh Chun-su, President of Sujinuri,
“good ingredients are key to a good product. In addition,
a processing technique that can keep the original
taste and nutrition of omija schizandra as well as invested
time and effort are crucial.”
Interview
Ms. Kim Mi-ja is a
recognized expert in
omija. After graduating
from university
as a food processing
major, she has
been working in the
field to help develop
and promote the
Mungyeong omija.
Why is the Mungyeong area so famous for
schizandra?
Mungyeong is a high altitude region with cool
temperatures that makes it good for growing
schizandra. The MATC is also playing an important
role in schizandra farming here by offering
classes about organic schizandra and teaching cultivation
and processing techniques.
Schizandra, the fruit of five tastes, makes a good
ingredient thanks to the variety of tastes that it can offer
and its vivid color. If one part schizandra confect
is mixed with three to five parts hot water, it can become
a hot tea to keep you warm in the winter. In the
summer, you can make schizandra-ade by adding
cold carbonated or still water. You can also use it
when preparing cocktails, salads, jellies, meat dishes,
cookies, and cakes.
Kim Mi-ja, a Mungyeong Agricultural Technology Center (MATC) consultant
“Improves functions of liver and lungs”
What are schizandra’s values and functions as
a food?
Chinese medicine regards schizandra as good for
the internal organs and scientific research has
proven this effect.
According to researchers, schizandra stimulates
the cranial nerve so it can improve memory, improve
liver and lung functions, and be used for
treating diabetes.
What food would you particularly recommend
to make with schizandra?
Schizandra is widely consumed as beverage.
Whether it is made into a drink or added to a dish
as a sauce, schizandra enhances the food’s taste
and fragrance, and gives it a beautiful hue thanks
to the natural red color of the fruit. If you use it
when cooking meat, schizandra will make it tender.
The fruit also helps digestion.
Topan Solar Salt,
Naturally-Crafted Grayish Gems
The mudflat off Korea’s southwestern coast is, along with the east coast of
Canada and the Amazon basin of Brazil, one of the world’s five largest mudflats
and renowned for its solar salt. The favorable environment - low salinity, a variety
of organisms, and abundant minerals - makes the Korean mudflat an ideal place
for producing solar salt. A study released at the International Salt Expo in Naples,
Italy, found that the Korean salt bests France’s famous Guerande salt, aka the
“Fleur De Sel” (flower of salt), in terms of the sodium chloride content. The
Korean variety has 81.75 percent whereas the French has 89.57 percent. The
same research also stated that the Korean salt has two to three times more
healthy minerals such as calcium and magnesium.
Topan solar salt of SINAN-
MADE CO.,LTD well-received
by superb quality
and luxury package design
Topan solar salt of SinanMade CO., LTD. is
produced on Sineui islet, in Sinan county,
an area off the southwestern coast. Two
hours by water from downtown Mokpo in Jeollanamdo,
the islet is representative of the clean environment
of the coast. Topan solar salt is produced in a traditional
way on the hardened mudflat. Compared to ordinary
solar salt that is manufactured by spreading
some artificial materials like tiles or floor coverings
on salt ponds, the Topan salt has a unique flavor and
taste. The Topan salt crystals are big and take on a
grayish color. It has some sweetness and the aftertaste
is refreshing rather than bitter.
Patented Safe Conveyance System
Another strong point of SinanMade is its sophisticated
conveyance system. The salt company employs
a hygienic system that enables a vehicle loaded with
some three tons of salt to move on rails from a salt
pond. The system spares workers the trouble of using
toilsome handcarts - the process of which, moreover,
has a high risk of gathering foreign substances.
With the conveyance system in operation, all the
workers have to do in the salt pond is shovel the salt
into sacks so that the vehicle quickly conveys the salt
sacks to storehouses. The patented system guarantees
safety and hygiene. It also allows the company to attach
to its products tags showing the salt pond number,
producers, and the dates of production.
“The Salt” Brand Goes to the United States
and Hong Kong
The Topan salt of the SinanMade is packed in
small quantities. As part of the strategy to promote
the salt as a high-end product, it is branded as “The
Salt” and distributed exclusively to well-known department
stores, posh hotels, and organic food specialty
stores. This export is on its way and mainly targets
the markets of the United States and Hong Kong.
In the U.S., the salt earned the approval of the US
Food and Drug Administration for its hygiene and is
now selling in Whole Foods Market, an organic food
specialty store. Despite a somewhat steep price, local
consumers are showing a favorable response to the
high quality of the product and luxurious design of
the packaging.
This year, SinanMade is trying to pioneer into the
Japanese market. The amount of salt imported by
Japan is expected to increase because the nuclear
woes have caused the Japanese consumers to distrust
the marine products produced in their own country.
The products of SinanMade will appear in some
11,000 Family Marts in Japan next month.
Celebrity Chef Marketing Strategy
In a bid to expand to new markets abroad,
SinanMade plans to employ a marketing strategy that
brings celebrity chefs to the fore. It will carve out the
American alcoholic drinks market with the help of
Corey Lee, the renowned owner and chef of Benu in
San Francisco. Mr. Lee was selected as a rising star
chef by the James Beard Foundation in 2006.
SinanMade has concluded an MOU (Memorandum
of Understanding) with the C-LLC Company the chef
runs. In addition, the salt company is planning to
make inroads into the central, eastern, and western
parts of the United States by signing contracts with
big distribution channels in those regions.
SinanMade launched a product named after the famous
chef Edward Kwon, who used to be a senior
managing chef at the Dubai Burj Al Arab and uses
the SinanMade solar salt whenever he cooks. The
Edward Kwon SALT is a brand of salt designed to
win over Southeast Asian consumers. Currently, the
product is selling though home-shopping networks in
seven countries and in the upscale Tangs department
store in Singapore.
One of the most important keywords that determines the competitiveness of businesses in the
21st century is “brand.” Since the quality of a product is fundamental to its survival in the global
market, a differentiated brand image is now one of a few factors that can decide whether a product
appeals to consumers or not. The National Brand Awards - an event at which Korea’s best
brands are selected and awarded - is marking its second year. This year a total of 1,953 brands
participated in the competition.
The winners of the national brand awards were chosen through an online survey of brand
awareness, customer satisfaction, and loyalty, as well as the impartial and fair evaluation of a panel
of brand experts. Here are fifteen agricultural and marine products whose brands won awards.
