Youth of The
Year
Each year in April, Boys & Girls Club branches nationwide
honor exceptional kids as “Youths of the Year.” Kids are
chosen for displaying good character and leadership at
the Club. This year, Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley
honored four outstanding young people.
Nathaniel Hatala
Nathaniel is 14 years old and has been a Club member since 2005. For the last year and a half,
Nathaniel has volunteered his time to lead games and activities and assist the staff in caring for
the Kingston Branch’s youngest members. Unit Director Tom Krusic says of Nathaniel, “He is an
amazing young person and will grow up to be a fine young adult with many leadership qualities.
Nathaniel is looked upon as a positive role model, an inspirational leader, and most of all, a giving
Club member.”
Jessica Childers
Jessica is a 14 year old long-time club member who has taken a real leadership role in the
ClubHouse Theatre program. She choreographs dances for the beginning and intermediate
casts, then spends more than 20 hours per month teaching the dances to the casts. During
productions, she also acts as stage manager for both the beginner and intermediate casts. Unit
Director Steve Savage says, “Her passion for helping is seen at the club each and every time she
steps foot on site. Children know her by name and look to her for a positive example.”
Holly Maag
17 year old Holly has attended the Club through our Clubhouse Theatre program for three years.
Her enthusiasm and willingness to make a difference promotes the success of others around her.
She not only makes a difference at the Club level, but also within her community by participating
in several other extra-curricular and volunteer activities. “Her down to earth, kind-hearted ways
keep everyone smiling when they are around Holly. Her genuine, fun loving character can always
turn frowns upside down,” says Unit Director Steve Savage.
Brett McDaniel
Brett is 12 years old and has been attending the Huntington Beach Branch for three and a half
years. As President of the Torch Club, a service and leadership group for teens and pre-teens,
he has been a wonderful mentor to younger kids and peer mentor to kids his own age. He also
helped organize a recycling program. Brett says, “I love to work with my friends and the staff to
help others. The staff is always there to help me do my best. They guide me through the tough
things, but at the same time allow me to succeed on my own.”
$6 million
$4 million
$2 million
Local families dream of
high quality, affordable
childcare and youth
programs. The Club is working together with our family of
supporters to make that dream come true by raising $6 million
to build a new Boys & Girls Club on the campus of our partner,
Golden West College. To date, the Club’s generous supporters have
given nearly $2 million to make this new site a reality. The Club is
slated to break ground in fall 2008 on Phase I of the project, a child
development center. $4 million more must be raised to complete Phase II, a two-story
school age youth center and a gymnasium. To make this possible, the Club is counting on the generosity of
the community, making a difference to generations of local families.
When completed, this new site will enable the Club to reach more than 1,500 additional youth each year.
These kids will get all the benefits of growing up at the Club, like academic support, a safe place to play
and have fun, a sense of belonging, character development and more! And, they will have the unique
experience of growing up on a college campus. It is the Club’s hope that this will inspire kids to dream of a
college education and know that it is a dream that they can achieve!
Thanks to the generosity of long-time supporters the Draper Family Fund, the Children &
Families Commission of Orange County, and Orange County’s United Way, immigrant families
in Huntington Beach are making great strides towards success. By attending the Twilight
Education Project three nights per week during the school year, whole families are getting
the language skills and academic support they need to succeed through tutoring for school
age youth, preschool instruction for tots, and ESL classes for parents.
The Cendejas family is just one example of the extraordinary success of this award-winning,
model family literacy program. Mother Alicia Cendejas and her three children Ricardo (age
14), Juan Carlos (age 11), and Briana (age 4) are eager to learn and have a record of perfect
attendance this year. Alicia and her two boys began attending the program when it first
started six years ago. When Alicia became pregnant with Briana, they stopped attending for
a while and noticed a huge difference: the boys struggled in school and lacked guidance
during their time away from the program. When Briana was old enough to join the program’s infant care, they family returned to the
program and once again saw the benefits of the program’s positive influence on the boys. Through Twilight’s tutoring component, Ricardo
and Juan Carlos get the help they need to do well in school and, because of Twilight’s preschool,
Briana is prepared to enroll in English-speaking Kindergarten rather than ESL Kindergarten.
Alicia says she wants to give her kids a good foundation and the Twilight Education Project
is the best way for her to do it. And, thanks to the adult ESL component of the program,
her English skills have improved so much that she can get more involved with her kids,
helping with their school work and understanding more when they speak English
with their friends.
Making
A difference
The Boys & Girls Club extends a special thanks to the community partners that
make success stories like this one possible, including the Draper Family Fund,
the Children & Families Commission of Orange County, Orange County’s
United Way, Huntington Beach City School District, Huntington Beach
Adult School, and Golden West College.
Ashleigh Hampton and Kasey Cooper, juniors at Edison High School, were asked
by their English teacher to try to make a difference in their community, and they
certainly have succeeded. Both young people are sports players, and they realized
that they could share their love of the game with disadvantaged younger kids and
get their whole teams involved in making a difference. Ashleigh and Kasey collected
an entire season’s worth of bottles used by Edison’s athletes and recycled them. Then,
they donated the money they earned from recycling to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley’s sports leagues. Thanks to these
thoughtful teens, the Club can give scholarships to kids in need to play in this summer’s basketball and soccer leagues. We hope you
will be inspired by this story and know that you can make a difference, too. By using the enclosed envelope to make a contribution, you,
too, can help give scholarships to disadvantaged youth, ensuring that all kids in our community have the opportunity to participate in
sports leagues, arts programs, and full days of fun at the Club all summer long.
Helps Build
dreAms
On March 7, Surf City Rotary Club held its first
annual fundraiser, the Surf City “Splash”, at
the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort
& Spa. The event drew a crowd of 250 guests
and raised $118,000 through ticket sales and
auction revenue. $40,000 of the proceeds
goes towards fulfilling the Surf City Rotary’s
pledge to donate $100,000 to the Boys &
Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley’s Building
Dreams campaign to build a new Boys & Girls
Club on the campus of Golden West College.
