paper, "Non-Harmony: A Vital Element in
Ear-Training," at the 1980 National Educational

Wood was appointed to the judges' panel for a
young performer's competition sponsored by
the Wellesley (Mass.) Choral Society.

Robert Morris has been named associate professor
of theory at the Eastman School.
1966
Michael Webster ('67GE) is first clarinetist of
the San Francisco Symphony for the 1980-81
season.

Raymond Egan is organist and choirmaster of
St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Richmond,
Va.... Paul Eickmann (GE, '71GE),
associate in academic affairs at Syracuse
University, was named acting vice president
for student affairs in June.
1968
Steve Gadd was featured in the August issue
of International Musician and Recording World,
published in London.... Anthony Pasquale
served as principal clarinetist of the Blomstedt
Institute for Conductors at Loma Linda
University in California in July. He is a
member of the music faculty at Union College
in Nebraska.
1970
Clive Amor is associate concertmaster of the
San Antonio (Tex.) Symphony.... Gerald
Hansen (GE) is chairman of the music department
at Schenectady (N.Y.) County Community
College. . . . Arthur Michaels is
managing editor of Music Educators Journal.
Shawnee Press has published his concert band

... Saxophonist and flutist Gerry Niewood
has signed a three-year contract with the
Radio City Music Hall Symphony.... Nancy
Herman Virkhaus (GE) and her husband,

mass at the summer music festival in
Salzburg, Germany.
1971
William Crimm staged the Chautauqua
Opera Company's production of Porgy and Bess
at the Eastman Theatre in August. He is
director of the William Crimm Institute of
Music in Rochester.
1972
Pianists Elizabeth Gordon Martyn and her
husband, Timothy, performed Poulenc's Double
Concerto with the Ridgewood (N.J.) Symphony
Orchestra.... Cecile Wright Saine
performed at the Downstairs Cabaret in

Zubin Mehta,* music director
of the New York Philharmonic
calls bassoonist Judith LeClai;
'79E "one of the finest talents I
have heard."
Next fall, when she finishes her
year as principal bassoon of the
San Diego Symphony, LeClair,
23, will assume the same position
with the New York Philharmonic,
one of the youngest musicians to
be appointed to a principal position
at that orchestra, and (with
the exception of Christine
Stavrache, briefly principal harpist
some twenty years ago) its first
woman principal. (It is believed
also that LeClair will be the only
woman ever to hold the principal
bassoon position in any of
America's major orchestras.)
She says, however, that she
auditioned purely as a musician,
without regard to the fact that she
would be the orchestra's sole
female principal. "I never really
thought about that," she says
matter-of-factly. "I just wanted the
job. "
Although LeClair has achieved
notable "firsts" in several ways, in
one other respect she is coming in
second: She is the second woman
in recent years to sign with the
New York Philharmonic a short
time after graduation from the
Eastman School. She was
preceded by Mindy Kaufman
'78E, a flutist who joined the orchestra
as piccolo player in 1979.

Rochester in October.... Sherry Zannoth
(GE) sang the role of the Countess in the
Glimmerglass Opera Theatre's production of
The Marriage ofFigaro in Cooperstown, N.Y.
1973
Kathy Dodge has written and recorded four
songs during the past year.
1974
John Zeigler is a member of the Midlands
Woodwind Quintet, the resident ensemble of
the Omaha Symphony Orchestra.
