research" that has provided
"new insights into the translation
of genetic information into proteins
and ultimately into cellular function");
and Dr. S. Marsh Tenney
'50MR, Nathan Smith Professor of
Physiology and former dean of
Dartmouth Medical School and
former Rochester faculty member
(cited for his "rigorous, quantitative
approach" and for his "acknowledged
world leadership in research
on comparative cardiorespiratory
physiology") .
OnJune 10, just a month before
his scheduled resignation as chairman
of the President's Council of
Economic Advisers, Martin S.
Feldstein received the honorary
doctor of laws degree at Graduate
School of Management Commencement
ceremonies. He was awarded
a citation that read, in part: "In the
complex and fast-changing world of
the late twentieth century, the
health of our economy depends
more and more on the soundness
and timeliness of the advice given to
the President of the United States.
The nation may consider itself fortunate
that the only source of
economic wisdom near the President,
the Chairman of his Council
of Economic Advisers, is Martin
Feldstein. "
Other Commencement honors
included the aw,ard of the sixth
Hutchison Medal for outstanding
achievement by alumni to Arthur
R. Miller' 55, professor at Harvard
Law School and host of the television
program Miller's Court.
"By all accounts," read the citation,
"Arthur Miller is one of the
nation's leading teachers and
scholars oflaw. His many books, his
service on the faculties of Columbia,
Minnesota, Michigan, and
Harvard, and his associations with
government study groups and councils
in Massachusetts and Washington
all give ample testimony to his
high place in the academic world.
"Not content within the confines
of the classroom, Arthur Miller has
found the means of making arcane
legal learning available to a large
audience through the medium of his
award-winning television program,
Miller's Court, and through a book
with the same title. If our rights and
duties as citizens are clearer to
many of us, it is Arthur Miller's
national teaching that we can
thank."
Continuing a tradition of twentythree
years, the $2,000 Edward
Peck Curtis Award for Excellence in
Undergraduate Teaching was presented
to a faculty member. This
year's recipient was Abram Loft,
chairman of the Eastman School
string department, whose citation
read, in part: "A splendid soloist,
he has devoted himself not merely
to teaching his own instrument but
to coaching string quartets and
chamber music groups, and has
won the devotion of his students for
his erudition and teaching skill, his
cheerful willingness to work early
and late in behalf of Polyhymnia
and her devotees."
Always very much a family affair,
Commencement this year was a little
more so than usual, with the simultaneous
graduation of three
sisters: Kathleen King, who
received one of four Ph.D. 's
granted in nursing;
Theresa King-Mattioli, who received
an M.S. in mechanical engineering;
and Ursula King, who received
a bachelor's degree in healthcare
policy. A fourth sister,
Maryann King, got there a year
early, with a 1983 degree in statistics
and math. Just to keep it in the
family, when their mother, Sara,
graduated on May 18 from Cayuga
County Community College,
Kathy King was the Commencement
speaker.
