premiere at Stephen F. Austin State University,
Tex. The work is based on ancient Greek texts
and is scored for mixed chorus with piano, oboe,
and percussion.

musical group Con Viva Musica performed
compositions by Leonard Moses, who lives in
Annapolis, Md. The music was commissioned
by the Maryland Park and Planning Commission
and funded by the Maryland Council of
Arts.

GE gave the world premiere of Concerto for
Violin and Orchestra, a composition by Keith
Gates of Lake Charles, La .... Doris Nicole
Gaver took a year offfrom the Williamstown
Elementary School system to study electronic
and computer-assisted music, contemporary
music, and improvisation .... Jean
Eichelberger Ivey GE, coodinator of the composition
department at the Peabody Conservatory
and founder and director of its electronic music
studio, was the subject of a profile in the
Baltimore Sun. "The modern composer has an
unusual wealth of resources to draw on," she
told the paper. "We not only know a lot about
the past, but we know a lot about the music of
cultures all over the world. A composer today
can and possibly should be eclectic."

Thelma Chock Diercks G E celebrated her 20th
year of collaboration with Carolyn Victorine
with piano recitals at Hollins College in
Virginia .... Ronald R. Sider '60GE, '67GE,
professor of music at Messiah College, directs
the Grantham (Pa.) Oratorio Society .. . .
"There will be no playing down to the youth
who attend the annual Young People's Concert
to be presented by the Duluth-Superior
Chamber Orchestra this month, according to
conductor Taavo Virkhaus [GE, '67GE]" and
the Ashland, Wis., Press. "This is the type of
music we play," says Virkhaus, "and the youth
will hear it as itis."

Pulitzer Prize-winner Dominick Argento GE
had his opera, Postcardfrom Morocco, presented in
Baltimore. "Putting it all together is the fun of
it," he said of composing. "By the time the
critics get a hold of it, all the fun is gone. Once it
leaves your hands, it's no longer yours." .. .
Robert Buzak GE, a string teacher in the
Tarrytown, N. Y., school district, conducted the
area's elementary school All County Orchestra
and Band .... Guy Frank GE was to retire as
chairman of the Creative Arts Division at
Shepherd College, Shepherdstown, W. Va ... .
Helen Bovbjerg Niedung '59GE was guest
soloist in the Naples-Marco (Fla.) Philharmonic
Orchestra's production of "An Evening of
Opera." The Ft. Myers News Press called the
event "a concert that will be remembered and
talked about for years to come .. .. remembered
above all for the wonderful artistry and sheer
love of music displayed by the unbeatable team
of soprano Helen Bovbjerg Niedung and conductor
Walter Hendl. Hendl was director from
1964 to 1973 of the Eastman School of Music,
the same school where Niedu"ng received her
bachelor's and master's degrees in music." . ..
Bernard Rubenstein, associate conductor of the
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, has also conducted
the Tulsa Philharmonic Orchestra ....
Richard Skerlong GE is principal violist in the
Seattle Symphony .... Marilyn Smith Sandness
was installed as president of the Great
Lakes Region of the National Association for
Music Therapy in Chicago. She is an associate
professor and coordinator of the music therapy
