In the media
Readers of national publications, as
well as of scientific and professional
journals, regularly come across
references to the scholarly activitiesand
professional judgments-of people
at the University. Following is a cross
section of some of those you might
have seen within recent months:
.New York Times: The term "sherpa"
-originally referring to the rugged
Tibetan guides who lead climbers up
Mount Everest-has taken on a new
meaning in the world of modern
economics, the Times noted, profiling
former UR Chancellor W. Allen
Wallis as an example. "Today's sherpas
are the seven key government aides
who lead their nations' chief executives
in their ascent to the world's economic
summit," the Times explained. Wallis
fills this role as U. S. Under Secretary
for Economic Affairs.
.Boston Globe: Reviewer Richard
Buell called the Eastman Philharmonia
"a well-trained, professional-sounding
group, trim and efficient in its ensemble
doings, blooming in overall sound"
in comments on the Boston premiere
last spring of Joseph Schwantner's New
Morningfor the World, narrated by
Willie Stargell. (Stargell, of course, is
the Pittsburgh Pirates' former star,
and Schwantner, also of course, is the
Eastman School's Pulitzer Prizewinning
composer.)
• Nursing Economics: When a registered
nurse quits, it costs a hospital
between $2,500 and $12,000 to replace
him or her. How hospitals can minimize
turnover and thus reduce costs is
the subject of a cover story by
Margaret D. Sovie in this nationally
circulated journal. Sovie is associate
dean for nursing practice at the School
of Nursing and associate director for
nursing at Strong Memorial Hospital.
.Fortune: An article on "greenmail"-corporate
moves to buy back
stock from unwanted investors-cited
the opinion of Michael C. Jensen, La
Clare Professor of Finance and
Business Administration at the
Graduate School of Management,
about the possibilities of ending this
practice. "I'm convinced that the
SEC's proposed rule restricting these
payments will only end up harming
shareholders and strengthening the
hand of entrenched managements," he
told the magazine. Jensen also was
quoted recently in articles on proxy
wars (Business Week), top executives'
pay (New York Times), corporate
takeover myths (AP), corporate
mergers (USA Today), and buying vs.
exploring for oil (New York Times).
.Town & Country: Strong Memorial
Hospital and eleven physicians on its
staff who are also members of the
medical school faculty are listed in the
magazine's biennial" directory of the
best medical specialists in the U. S. "
Also on the list are two faculty members
who are on the staff of the affiliated
Genesee Hospital. Selection was
based on the judgment of physicians,
who rated their peers' reputation for
research and for skill in patient care.
.Business Week: Although drug
companies spend enormous sums on
research and development, it takes
many years before profits from new
drugs are realized, according to
Business Week. "Simply bringing a drug
from the clinical, or human testing,
stage, to market now takes seven
years," the magazine noted, citing an
estimate by Ronald W. Hansen, associate
director of the University's Center
for Research in Government Policy
and Business. In another article,
Business Week quoted Herbert B.
Voelcker, professor of electrical engineering
and director of the Production
Automation Project, on a breakthrough
in computer-aided design .
.N ational Geographic: Two different
areas oflaser research at Rochester
were described in an article on
laser technology. One concerned the
use of lasers to screen women for cervical
cancer; the other had to do with
laser fusion at the Laboratory for Laser
Energetics.
.Wall Street Journal: In the
"N otable and Quotable" section,
Dean Emeritus William H. Meckling
of the Graduate School of Management
offered a radical solution to the
growth of government and the resulting
decline of capitalism: "My first
preference . . . is to get rid of representatives
in the legislative process by
abolishing Congress and the state legislatures
.... There is no reason why all
statutes, including budgets, couldn't
be submitted to a ... referendum."
Meckling's second choice "would be
something along the lines of the Swiss
political system, where any law passed
by the federal parliament can be
brought to a referendum" and the
right to tax is limited to the cantons. In
the speech from which these views
were drawn, Meckling singled out legislative
bodies-Congress in particular-as
major culprits in the expansion
of government ownership and regulation
of the economic pie.
.United Press International: An
anti-viral drug in capsule form significantly
shortens the length and severity
of recurrent genital herpes, UPI reported.
The drug study, published in
the Journal of the American Medical
Association, was conducted by Dr.
Richard C. Reichman, associate professor
of medicine, and colleagues.
