1977. Childrens Museum of Naples, Naples, FL. $25,000, 2009. To expand<br />

<strong>the</strong> museum and summer reading partner programs at <strong>the</strong> public <strong>libraries</strong><br />

in Collier County.<br />

1978. Disability Network, Flint, MI. $15,000, 2009. For Freedom Technology<br />

project, which will provide tech literacy programs to people who need<br />

training in basic computing and special assistive technology programs<br />

that help <strong>the</strong>m with <strong>the</strong>ir disabilities. There are currently 130 people<br />

(primarily youth ages 16-24) on <strong>the</strong> waiting list for Disability Network<br />

technology training. The goal is to increase workforce readiness and <strong>the</strong><br />

ability to live independently.<br />

1979. Eudora Welty Foundation, Jackson, MS. $18,000, 2009. To conduct<br />

symposia for students and <strong>the</strong> public and to develop a teaching resource<br />

media kit using rare film footage of Pulitzer Prize winner Eudora Welty<br />

reading her short stories. The program will bring three exceptional writers<br />

to Mississippi to discuss <strong>the</strong>ir own work (as well as Welty’s) with high<br />

school and college students from <strong>the</strong> three-county Jackson metropolitan<br />

area. Teachers will be provided a reading list and o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>information</strong> to<br />

prepare <strong>the</strong>se students for <strong>the</strong> symposia.<br />

1980. Foreign Born Information and Referral Network, Columbia, MD.<br />

$10,000, 2009. For Learning English After School Program (LEAP), which<br />

works with students (grades K-12) from 11 public schools in Howard<br />

County, Maryland. Volunteer tutors work with students to improve<br />

reading, conversation and, writing skills.<br />

1981. <strong>Governors</strong> Books from Birth Foundation, Nashville, TN. $50,000, 2009.<br />

For Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, making free books available to<br />

children in Tennessee under 5 years old, and Distressed County Grant<br />

Program, providing financial assistance to counties who lack base to<br />

initiate or maintain book program.<br />

1982. Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library Foundation, Indianapolis, IN.<br />

$25,000, 2009. For program promoting literacy. This program reaches<br />

55,000 Indianapolis children and parents and successfully instills a love<br />

of reading and stronger reading skills.<br />

1983. James V. Brown Library, Williamsport, PA. $10,000, 2009. For early<br />

literacy program that will provide free books to children born in<br />

Susquehanna Hospital. The program will provide one birthday book a year<br />

for children from birth to three years old. The program encourages<br />

parents to get a baby library card for <strong>the</strong>ir children.<br />

1984. Library Foundation of Hennepin County, Minneapolis, MN. $25,000,<br />

2009. For program to provide training in financial literacy, citizenship,<br />

workforce readiness, basic math, and English. A particular focus will be<br />

<strong>the</strong> Somali Family Literacy project to address <strong>the</strong> growing Somali<br />

population in <strong>the</strong> Twin Cities.<br />

1985. Martin Library Association, York, PA. $10,000, 2009. For Grade One At<br />

<strong>the</strong> Library (GOAL), a program to encourage first graders to come to <strong>the</strong><br />

library, get a library card, and use <strong>the</strong> library as a partner in reading,<br />

homework, and research.<br />

1986. Ola<strong>the</strong> Public Library, Ola<strong>the</strong>, KS. $10,000, 2009. For literacy program<br />

geared primarily to young readers, including a summer reading program<br />

for children, summer teen reading program, and I Read With Mayor Mike,<br />

which works with first-graders throughout <strong>the</strong> school year.<br />
