Page 4 Water Street Mile July 10 The 11th annual Water Street Mile starts at 9 a.m. on July 10. The race begins at the intersection of Water Street and Second Avenue, but registration is at Menomonie Street Dental near the race’s finish line. The Tortoise and Hare 5K isn’t your typical race, and that’s exactly how ITC member and race director Fred Hable wants it to be. Start with an evening race held mid-week. Make it a pointto-point course on the often ran, but seldom raced Putnam Trail. Then finish it off with some pizza. “I guess I just like pizza,” Fred said of the signature offering of Sammy’s pizza and Bohemian Ovens bread. And apparently others do, too, as participation continually grows, including a record-setting 139 entrants last year. But the races don’t just field carb-loving couch potatoes. The list of past champions reads like Upcoming Races Race day registration is from 7-8:30 a.m. and costs $19 for individuals, $60 for a four-person team and $15 for runners 70 or older or who are members of the L.E. Phillips Senior Center. July/august 2010 Page 5 Chris Wirtz had barely crossed the finish line at the 2009 NCAA track and field championships, when he made a bold resolution for the following year. “I knew I could win it,” he said. Wirtz, then a junior, had just earned All- American honors with his fourth-place finish in the steeplechase and already held the school record in the event. But his tireless work ethic and fierce determination were on a collision course with an opponent that was fueled by those very traits – a stress fracture. Diagnosed in July with a stress fracture in his foot, Wirtz had to do the one thing he hated doing most: nothing. Schwamberger said. “He’s such a great competitor.” Wirtz hopped in the last two meets of the season, helping the team earn a berth to the national championships. But already the pain in his foot had returned, so it was another lay-off and another gradual return to running. “Dan was great about it,” Wirtz said. “He’d just keep saying, ‘Focus on the main goal.’ “ Wirtz would only run one race indoors, where he defended his conference title in the 3,000-meter run in 8:34, a three-second PR. “That’s when I knew I was ready for outdoors,” Wirtz said. Heading into the national meet with the fastest seed time, Wirtz had plenty of confidence. But more importantly, he was fresh, said Coach Schwamberger. “Because Chris works so hard, he’d have a tendency to become flat by the end of the season,” he said. “I think his lack of racing this season really helped him.” With 500 meters to go, Wirtz broke away from his main competitor to win in a school and facility record 8:56. “I trusted my (athletic) trainer and Dan,” Wirtz said. “I knew they knew what they were talking about.”
