Mile July 10<br />
The 11th annual<br />
Water Street Mile starts<br />
at 9 a.m. on July 10.<br />
The <strong>race</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>s at the<br />
<strong>in</strong>tersection of Water<br />
Street and Second Avenue,<br />
but registration<br />
is at Menomonie Street<br />
Dental near the <strong>race</strong>’s<br />
f<strong>in</strong>ish l<strong>in</strong>e.<br />
The Tortoise and Hare 5K<br />
isn’t your typical <strong>race</strong>, and<br />
that’s exactly how ITC member<br />
and <strong>race</strong> director Fred Hable<br />
wants it to be.<br />
Start with an even<strong>in</strong>g <strong>race</strong><br />
held mid-week. Make it a po<strong>in</strong>tto-po<strong>in</strong>t<br />
course on the often ran,<br />
but seldom <strong>race</strong>d Putnam Trail.<br />
Then f<strong>in</strong>ish it off with some<br />
pizza.<br />
“I guess I just like pizza,”<br />
Fred said of the signature offer<strong>in</strong>g<br />
of Sammy’s pizza and<br />
Bohemian Ovens bread.<br />
And apparently others do,<br />
too, as participation cont<strong>in</strong>ually<br />
grows, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g a record-sett<strong>in</strong>g<br />
139 entrants last year.<br />
But the <strong>race</strong>s don’t just field<br />
carb-lov<strong>in</strong>g couch potatoes. The<br />

Center. Proceeds benefit<br />
the Senior Center.<br />

This year’s event starts at 7:30<br />
p.m. on July 29. Registration is<br />
at the YMCA. The <strong>race</strong> starts<br />
<strong>in</strong> Demmler Park and f<strong>in</strong>ishes<br />
<strong>in</strong> Owen Park dur<strong>in</strong>g the Eau<br />
Claire Municipal Band concert.<br />
“The concert creates a good<br />
atmosphere,” Fred said.<br />
