JULY/
AUG
2010
in hot RCU race
It was a day for the
record books at the
RCU Charity Classic
June 26 in Eau Claire’s
Phoenix Park.
Not only did a record
817 finishers cross
the line at the 15th
annual event, but two
former UW-Eau Claire
standouts returned to
their former stomping
grounds to break the
course records under hot and humid
conditions.
Jason Finch, 33, of River Falls bettered
his own mark in the 10K set in
2004 by 26 seconds, crossing the line
in 31 minutes, 29 seconds. Finch, a
1999 Blugold alum and All-American,
also claimed 10K titles in 1998
and 1999.
Mary Palmer, a 2009 graduate,
ran 38:06 for the women’s 10K title,
beating the second-place finisher
by more than 3 minutes, but barely
eclipsing Jen Theisen’s 2004 record
of 38:10.
In the 2 mile races, Wausau East
the 15th running
of the RCU
on June 26.
Left: Jason Finch
record in the 10K,
High School senior Cody Buckli
(10:40) and Mondovi High School
sophomore Britney Rud (14:18) were
respective champions.
The previous record for RCU race
finishers was 782 set in 2008.

Meet puts ‘track’ back into Track Club
Since I have been a track club member, I have
always found it interesting that a track club
would not have a track meet. After attending several
meetings early on, I found that the last track
meets were in the early 1990s.
A track club not having a track meet really inspired
me to resurrect one similar to the days of
old. Those meets were important because of our
club’s name. These meets also were designed to
promote youth running.
So for the last two years, I have been working
with many other club members to put the “track”
back into the track club. I first thought this was
going to be an easy task because many members
use the UW-Eau Claire track for interval workouts
with no problem.
This is a great, high-quality track that had
everything needed to produce a high-quality
meet. However, obtaining use of the track for an
event was harder than I could have imagined.
After several setbacks on obtaining the UW
track to use, we decided to push forward with
a different site. With help from Roger Skifstad
and Adam Smit, the pieces finally aligned in our
favor. We were granted access to the Chippewa
Falls High School track for an evening event on
Aug. 3.
Once we had the track and a date, Adam and
Time: 6 p.m.
Date: Tue., Aug. 3
Place: Chi-Hi track
Events: 400, 800,
medley relay.
ITC Mini-Meet
I had several discussions to fast track the event.
We decided to keep the event low-cost -- $2 for a
single event and $5 for multiple events, and no
prizes or shirts will be given out. We also wanted
to limit the number of events offered in our first
attempt at running the event.
This meet has a distance that anyone of any
age can compete in, and we encourage everyone
to participate. The distances will consist of a predicted
mile, 400-, 800- and 3200-meter run and a
medley relay (1200, 400, 800, 1600).
So mark your calendar for Aug. 3 and bring
the family out for an evening of camaraderie and
friendly competition. The event starts at 6 p.m.,
and registration starts at 5 p.m. I hope to see you
at the meet.
Good running, Dave Carothers.
Cost: $2/one event or
$5/multiple events.
$5 race discount
The ITC board recently approved
a motion to increase ITC
member discounts for ITC races
from $3 to $5.
The decision to increase the
discount was a reflection of the
trend toward higher entry fees
for races.

The Tortoise and Hare 5K
isn’t your typical race, and
that’s exactly how ITC member
and race director Fred Hable
wants it to be.
Start with an evening race
held mid-week. Make it a pointto-point
course on the often ran,
but seldom raced Putnam Trail.
Then finish it off with some
pizza.
“I guess I just like pizza,”
Fred said of the signature offering
of Sammy’s pizza and
Bohemian Ovens bread.
And apparently others do,
too, as participation continually
grows, including a record-setting
139 entrants last year.
But the races don’t just field
Chris Wirtz had barely
crossed the finish
line at the 2009 NCAA
track and field championships,
when he made
a bold resolution for
the following year.
“I knew I could win
it,” he said.
Wirtz, then a junior,
had just earned All-
American honors with
his fourth-place finish
in the steeplechase and
already held the school
record in the event.
But his tireless work
ethic and fierce determination
were on a
collision course with
an opponent that was
fueled by those very
traits – a stress fracture.
Diagnosed in July
with a stress fracture
in his foot, Wirtz had
to do the one thing
he hated doing most:
nothing.
For five weeks he did
nothing until the start of the
cross country season, where he
was limited in his training and
racing.
“We knew if we could just get
him healthy, the racing would
take care of itself,” Coach Dan
Blugold Country
Worth the wait
Patience key to Blugold runner’s national title
Senior Chris Wirtz weathered a stress fractures and minimal
racing to capture a NCAA steeplechase title in May.
Schwamberger said. “He’s such
a great competitor.”
Wirtz hopped in the last two
meets of the season, helping the
team earn a berth to the national
championships. But already the
pain in his foot had returned, so
it was another lay-off and an-
other gradual return to
running.
“Dan was great about
it,” Wirtz said. “He’d just
keep saying, ‘Focus on
the main goal.’ “
Wirtz would only
run one race indoors,
where he defended his
conference title in the
3,000-meter run in 8:34, a
three-second PR.
“That’s when I knew I
was ready for outdoors,”
Wirtz said.
Heading into the
national meet with the
fastest seed time, Wirtz
had plenty of confidence.
But more importantly,
he was fresh, said Coach
Schwamberger.
“Because Chris works
so hard, he’d have a tendency
to become flat by
the end of the season,”
he said. “I think his lack
of racing this season really
helped him.”
With 500 meters to go,
Wirtz broke away from his main
competitor to win in a school
and facility record 8:56.
“I trusted my (athletic) trainer
and Dan,” Wirtz said. “I knew
they knew what they were talking
about.”

This column to date has
focused on the high quality
of runners and the paucity of
women participants at ITC
races. Also, local runners made
up of relative small percentage
of top finishers.
When, one might
ask, will local runners
and women make
a significant impact
on the local running
scene?
We have previously
mentioned Paul Dale,
an Eau Claire resident
who was always prominent
in our races (he
finished eight seconds
ahead of Steve Hoag in
the first Sawdust City
Six Miler).
Also, we mentioned
Dave Kayser who
finished second in the
1975 Carson 10. Dave
was an Eau Claire resident.
Another area finisher who
was fast coming into prominence
was Gerhart Sasman.
Sasman was from Alma Center,
and he ran for UW-Stout.
Other area finishers who had
top ten finishes in earlier ITC
races were Ken Van Es (ninth
in the Frigid 8) and Dan Rindfleisch
(fifth in the Frigid 8). Jim
Vedder (TCTC member from
Elmwood) was a consistent high
finishers as well.
The Frigid 8 race in 1971 gave
an indication of what we may
expect in the future. A high
school division was established,
and the young runners ran with
the main contestants.
No, they didn’t win any
prizes, but all ran credible races.
The young runners were Paul
Swanson, Barry Weber, Evarist
Schneider, Steven Drury, Tim
LeGore, Harlan Weber and Pete
Warner. With the exception of
LeGore (an Eau Claire resident),
the other runners were from
Mondovi.
It was inevitable. The 6th annual
Carson Park 10-Mile race
brought out a classy, very competitive
woman. Jan
Arenz was a nationally
known runner and was
probably the outstanding
female marathoner
of her time in the Twin
Cities.
She ran the course
in 67:35 and thus established
herself as the
first competitive female
to run in the ITC races.
The year was 1974.
In 1975 Mary Wintrone
of Chetek was
the only woman to run
in the Carson 10. She
was the first local/area
finisher, and she would
become a familiar participant
in ITC races.
In fact, later in 1975,
Mary will be joined by Mary
Czarapata, Sharon Schelski,
Alex Boise, Sheila Slattery and
Nancy Ivarinen in the Sawdust
City 6 Miler.
Women entrants continued to
A year later Kim Merritt
ran the Sawdust City 6 Miler
in 36:04. Merritt, who ran for
the University of Wisconsin,
was the women’s winner of
the 1976 Boston Marathon.
As for the Sawdust City
race, it should be mentioned
at this time that the race was
once two races: a men’s race
and a women’s race. I don’t
know the exact year that it
was merged into one, but I
would guess that it was in
the late 1970s.
The purpose of the dual
race was to enable the women
to develop their running
skills in a minimally threatening
environment. Whatever
the reason, success of
women’s racing occurred
quickly.
One of the things that I’ve always liked about
the Indianhead Track Club is its tortoise and hare
logo. Not only do I like the design, but I like the
way it exemplifies two of the things that I enjoy
about running.
There’s the hare side of me that enjoys the challenge
of competition and pushing myself to run
as fast as I can. There’s also the tortoise side of
me that enjoys so many
of the more laid-back
aspects of running.
During the week, my
early-morning run is a
time to enjoy some of
the simple pleasures
such as fresh air and
quiet; a beautiful sunrise;
and the sights and
sounds of nature such
as the owl I’d often
hear hooting when I
ran past the wooded
park along Sherman Creek this past winter.
The tortoise side of me also enjoys how my
daily run provides me with a quiet time to
clear my head, say my prayers, and collect my
thoughts. And how my Saturday morning group
run from Owen Park provides me with a time to
share some laughs and swap some running tips
and stories with old and new friends.
So I guess it’s the tortoise side of me that especially
enjoyed some recent turtle sightings in
Carson Park.
The first encounter came on a beautiful sunny
day last fall. My friend Carol talked me into trying
kayaking for the first time, and we set out
from Braun’s Bay on my maiden voyage.
I’ve run through and around Carson Park
thousands of times, but this was the first time
Wade’s Wit
By Wade Zwiener
Runs bring ITC logo to life
that I’d seen it from the waters of Half Moon
Lake. It was a new perspective that really made
me appreciate the beauty of the park’s tall pine
trees and steep, rocky shorelines.
One of the highlights of my inaugural kayak
outing on Half Moon was looking through binoculars
at a turtle sunning itself on a log. It was
the sight of total enjoyment and relaxation.
My most recent encounter
with a “turtle” in Carson
Park came during our
Saturday morning group
run a few weeks ago. The
dozen or so of us who’d
started together had split
up into smaller groups
based on pace, and I happened
to be running at
the time with Mike Olson,
Mike Revello, Dave Carothers
and Randy Aumann.
Just as we were coming
down the hill on the exercise trail near the Dairy
Queen, we spotted a big, green critter sitting in
the narrow patch of grass between the trail and
the road. It was a giant snapping turtle.
We all stopped to check it out, and Mike—being
the outdoorsy guy that he is—decided to give
us a little demonstration on why they’re called
snappers. He found a branch in the woods along
the trail and waved it in front of the turtle’s nose.
The turtle didn’t like this one bit. It snapped at
the stick like a cobra. After seeing that eye-opening
display, I wouldn’t recommend getting your
fingers anywhere near a snapping turtle’s head.
Which made it all the more impressive what
Mike did next. Deciding that being next to a
fairly busy road wasn’t such a safe place for the
Dear LeQuene:
Ask LeQuene
I will be going on a tour through France this summer and plan to
continue my training. I need some tips on the best way to meet French
women runners.
Race Brown
Dear Race:
The best place to meet runners, male or female, is at the track, so
plan on finding a track and running intervals.
When you see the woman that you want to meet resting along
the side of the track, run up to her, and using your best, most
nasal accent, say “Croyez-vous au coup de foudre ou peut-tre je
devrais courir un autre tour de piste?”
English subtitle: “Do you believe in love at first sight or should I
run another lap for you?”
turtle, he picked up the
snapper by the tail and
carried it across the road to
Half Moon Lake, where he
Mike had done his good
deed for the day and impressed
his friends with
his bravery. I know I never
would have had the guts
to pick up that snapping
turtle.
We resumed our run, and
about a mile farther down
the trail, a rabbit darted in
