a 53:38 <strong>in</strong> the same <strong>race</strong>.<br />
A year later Kim Merritt<br />
ran the Sawdust City 6 Miler<br />
<strong>in</strong> 36:04. Merritt, who ran for<br />
the University of Wiscons<strong>in</strong>,<br />
was the women’s w<strong>in</strong>ner of<br />
the 1976 Boston Marathon.<br />
As for the Sawdust City<br />
<strong>race</strong>, it should be mentioned<br />
at this time that the <strong>race</strong> was<br />
once two <strong>race</strong>s: a men’s <strong>race</strong><br />
and a women’s <strong>race</strong>. I don’t<br />
know the exact year that it<br />
was merged <strong>in</strong>to one, but I<br />
would guess that it was <strong>in</strong><br />
the late 1970s.<br />
The purpose of the dual<br />
<strong>race</strong> was to enable the women<br />
to develop their runn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
skills <strong>in</strong> a m<strong>in</strong>imally threaten<strong>in</strong>g<br />
environment. Whatever<br />
the reason, success of<br />
women’s rac<strong>in</strong>g occurred<br />
quickly.<br />
