A year later Kim Merritt
ran the Sawdust City 6 Miler
in 36:04. Merritt, who ran for
the University of Wisconsin,
was the women’s winner of
the 1976 Boston Marathon.
As for the Sawdust City
race, it should be mentioned
at this time that the race was
once two races: a men’s race
and a women’s race. I don’t
know the exact year that it
was merged into one, but I
would guess that it was in
the late 1970s.
The purpose of the dual
race was to enable the women
to develop their running
skills in a minimally threatening
environment. Whatever
the reason, success of
women’s racing occurred
quickly.
