The S.W.A.T. Dispatch
~ Mr. Nickerson
S.W.A.T. faced some challenges
in the past semester. Travelling
students at lunchtime made
meeting challenging.
We prevailed however, and had
some successful events. Our
participation in Pink Shirt Day
earned a total of $313 for Red
Cross RespectEd programming.
As well, we collected “Change for
a Change” and raised almost $200
to help bring fresh water to a
community in Sierra Leone with
Free The Children.
As the year wraps up, we are
formulating plans for early
September. We look forward to
next year, and the promise that it
brings!
Well, that means the school year is wrapping up doesn’t it?
So here we have the last newsletter of this year, so you can catch
up on the last couple of busy months here at ACI.
We can almost see summer, hiding behind those last few classes,
final assignments, exams, report cards, and, for some of us,
graduation.
Old ACI will have its 50 th summer of empty halls this year, and
will be ready to welcome folks back in September, after their safe,
happy, restful summer.
JUNE NEWSLETTER
VOCAL JAZZ & BAND REPORT
~ CIARA STANOWSKI
The month of February has been very busy in vocal jazz and
band. The vocal and instrumental jazz groups are going to be
taking a trip to the Brandon Jazz Festival on March 17 th -18 th to
observe performances and clinics that will be taking place. In
vocal jazz we have just begun learning new songs to perform at
the yearend concert. We have taken on some very challenging
material that we think will be very enjoyable when it’s
completed. Band has been especially busy preparing for the
Optimist Festival in Winnipeg on February 22, 2012. The pieces
we performed were Salvation is Created and Battle Pavane. We
performed at the Convention Centre, were adjudicated by various
different musicians and were given tips for improvement. After
the Festival we went from a group dinner at Boston Pizza. The
band is now working on the pieces that will be performed at the
yearend concert on May 31 st in the Arborg Hall. The beginner
Band Festival is being held on May 14 th . We will also be
participating in a performance workshop with the Winnipeg Jazz
Orchestra on March 23 rd Students performing at the Optimist
Festival in Winnipeg on Wednesday
February 22
.
nd As the weather gets nicer and nicer the buzz of summer jobs, exams, graduation and vacation are filling the halls.
Where has the time gone? It feels like it was just Christmas and now we are embarking on the end of the year.
For parents of graduates I am sure it feels like you were just at the kindergarten graduation and now the real
graduation is upon us. Enjoy every day with your children as they are growing up so quickly and will be moving
out and onto new lives shortly.
Welcome and thank you to Mr. Jerry Ramnath for joining the ACI staff to teach Physics 12, Essential Math 10
& 11. It is a real treat to work with Mr. Ramnath. His first year at ACI was when I was in grade 10. He still
seems as spunky and full of fun as he did way back. Hope you enjoy your time at ACI.
We also welcome Ms. Shauna . Theriault as an Educational Assistant. She comes to ACI with lots of experience
and has worked with several students in the past at AEMS. Many students were excited to see her here and her
transition was made easier. We hope she enjoys her time here.
It is with heavy hearts that we need to announce that Ms. Katie Gullett will be leaving ACI and teaching at RCI.
Our loss will definitely be their gain. We wish Ms. Gullett a good year at RCI and some students may continue
under her instruction if they select to take courses at RCI. She will be missed.
This coming year the school day will be structured into a 5 period day instead of a 4 period day. Classes will be
60 minutes long instead of 80 minutes. To meet the many outcomes of Math and ELA curriculum most students in
grades 9 & 10 will take Math and ELA twice throughout the year. It is our goal that the students not be short
changed in these areas and that all skills are developed. If you have any questions please attend the parent
information night on Wednesday, June 6, 2012.
Course registration forms have been handed out and need to be returned by Friday, June 8, 2012. ACI and RCI
are continuing with our Joint Campus initiative to offer courses to students from each school. It is our plan to
continue increasing the opportunities for students to take courses at the partner school. The joint campus initiative
is working well. We have had a few glitches and growing pains but when we reflect on the first year of this
program we feel that it has been a good start. Check the registration forms carefully and make choices that best
reflect your learning and educational goals and plans.
As I reflect on the second semester I realize it has CHOIR been a REPORT busy and fast paced semester. Check the various reports
in this newsletter for the details. Basketball and ~ KIRSTIN badminton JONASSON seasons have come to an end and track and field is in
The success rate is astronomical, unlike other high schools we have no terms of ‘band geek’ or ‘singer dork,’
On which April of 11 that are in Choir, or any other musical portion, are considered ‘cool’. If you were to walk in the choir
room at Riverton, you’d see a room full of young people who are generally interested in music of all kinds. Choir
students from our division have set a good light upon them, after all of their performances have been raved for
weeks and people flock the performances. There are three songs that choir kids are currently reviewing and
singing, those of which are ‘Shosholoza’ an African folk song, ‘Hosanna NkosiPhezulu’ another African song,
and ‘Things that Never Die’ a beautiful piece from the words of author Charles Dickens. All three songs are
sophisticated and cultural.
We will be performing in the Evergreen Festival of the Arts in late April/early May.
th students and staff at ACI wore pink to recognize the need to stop bullying. On May 17 th the grade
10 ELA class presented to the entire school on Anti-homophobia day and once again encouraged students and
staff to wear pink and reinforce the need to stop bullying. It was very encouraging to see the large number of
students and staff members participate in these events. On Friday, May 25 th all high school students in the
division got together in Gimli to experience an Interschool Day. Everyone came back with a positive buzz in
spite of the cold, rainy weather. The students who participated reported that the day was excellent and even better
than they expected. Congratulations to the planning committee which included Ben Airey, Bailey Sigvaldason
and Monica Dueck from ACI. These students are part of the Evergreen School Division Student Council who
planned and carried out the Wellness Day. Congratulations.

There are only 3 weeks of classes left before exams. Everyone has work that needs to be done. On Friday, June
8 th students at ACI will take part in a Safe Teen workshop. This workshop was held here 6 years ago and we felt
that it was time to have students experience the message and information again. Students were very impressed
with the presentations last time and I expect the same positive response again. The final Band/Choir Concert
will take place on Thursday, May 31st at the Arborg Community Hall at 7:00 pm. Everyone is invited to
come and see the students perform. It has been an amazing three years of the music program and the students
continue to grow and wow us. The Graduation Ceremony will take place on Saturday, June 23 rd at 4:00 pm.
The community is invited to take part in the ceremony. The dinner and dance is for invited guests only.
On Thursday, June 14 th in the afternoon ACI will host the annual Academic and Sport Award presentations in
the afternoon. At this time we will also feature the Internship and Apprenticeship Sponsorship presentations
and are inviting parents to attend. A lot of work goes into planning this event. We will be inviting the businesses
who have taken on Interns and Apprenticeships to be part of the ceremony. Please mark your calendar June 14 th
at 1:00 pm.
It is very disturbing to see the recent vandalism that has taken place over the last few weeks. The parking lot
partitions have been driven into and broken. A Graduation Composite picture from 1989 has been forcefully
removed from the wall and taken. The photo is a class memory and it is so disappointing. These acts reflect
negatively on the students of ACI. If you have any information please let the office know so that the photo can be
retrieved. Tips can be anonymous. An art sculpture is also missing and needs to be returned so that it can be a
part of the art show. A few individuals are representing the majority of positive ACI students negatively.
Students and parents are reminded that exams will be upon us in no time. The exam schedule is posted below.
Please post it in a visible spot for all to remember. Remind your child/ren to prepare for exams, complete all
course work and finish the year strong and positively.
With sports awards day fast approaching
,it is a good time to reflect on the year
that has stretched out behind us. It
seems as if it was not that long ago that
we were getting our teams ready for
volleyball zones. We had all four teams
in zones and ended up in the finals or
semi-finals with most of them. As
volleyball was winding down we started
right up into curling and basketball. We
had curlers attending practice each
week and sent a team of boys and a team
of girls to zones. Basketball took us from
December to March. We had a JV and
varsity boys team. Both teams
represented us well at the zone level.
With spring came our track and field
season. Our athletes competed in a
couple of meets before zones. Every
athlete did very well, with a few
personal bests and top placements.
Our busy sports year could not be
done without the help of our dedicated
coaches and players. Please come to
our awards day held on June 14,
starting at 1:00, to show your
appreciation and celebrate in another
great year of sports at ACI.
Submitted by Ms. Ashby
With basketball and curling
out of the way we quickly
started our badminton
season. Our athletes filled a
JV and varsity roster for
divisionals. A healthy
representation from our
varsity doubles team made it
on to zones and all of the JV
team made it to the zone
level.

Runnin’, Jumpin’ and Throwin’
The Track & Field Report
Coach Gullett
19 ACI athletes have been working hard over the past 10 weeks, attending practices and track
meets. The adventure started with the runners before Spring Break, and the field athletes were
added to the mix when school resumed the beginning of April. This year’s track team consists of
(athletes in italics are those who have qualified for Provincials in Selkirk):
Jr. Boys (gr. 9&10) – Neil S., Dayne F., Martin Y., Keith W., Ben A., Michael S., Aaron K., Cal F.
Jr. Girls – Susan S., Krista S., Tayler R., Rae-Lynn J., Katherine O., Darcie S., Bailey S.
Sr. Boys (gr. 11&12) – Steven J., Ryan P.
Sr. Girls – Emma S.
The team attended their first track meet in Stonewall in early May. This was an abnormally
beautiful day for so early in the season, and the kids started off very well with several students placing
in the top five in their events. Jack and Darcie beat their respective provincial standard qualifying
distances in shot-put, while Cal beat the 100M standard. The jr. boys 4x100M relay standard time was
also beaten by Neil, Cal, Aaron, and Dayne. Needless to say, it was a very impressive beginning to the
season!
The students went on to participate in the grueling meet on the rubber track in Selkirk, which
featured 47 schools from across the province. It was a very long day of competition with some
events having nearly 100 athletes registered, but all ACI athletes came away with valuable experience
in their respective events.
Zones was held in rainy Stonewall on May 25 th and 29 th . Despite the less than ideal weather
conditions, several members of the team were successful in their attempts. Cal, Dayne, Neil, and
Aaron ran the medley relay finishing first ahead of the Warren and Stonewall powerhouses! Other
notable performances included:
Darcie - 1 st in shot-put
Cal – 1 st in 100M
Neil - 2 nd in javelin
Aaron - 3 rd in high jump
Ben – 3 rd in triple jump
Martin – 3 rd in 400M
The jr. boys placed third in overall points at zones – a great accomplishment!
Congratulations to all athletes on a great season, and best of luck to the eight students who are
moving on to represent ACI at Provincials in Selkirk June 7-9 th .A special thank you to Neil
Sigvaldason’s family for lending the use of their tent for the track meets, and the extra help from
community members at practices during the season (Heather Gudmundson, Terry Stanowski, Tom
Chwalliboga, and Stacey Martenson).

Food from the Land-G10 Geography with Miss Spring
Arborg is a community surrounded in agriculture, therefore this unit in geography
was easy for students to see the relevance of the content being covered. We made
many connections within the community during this unit. The following are pictures
from different events that took place in and out of the classroom during this unit…
Trying to go back in time and capture the history of
agriculture on a local and global level, we visited the
school at the Heritage Village and learned from local,
David Gislason’s, experiences in agriculture.
We visited Johnston’s Dairy Farm. We toured the old and new barn and saw the
changes in their business of dairy farming.
Adrienne Percy visited our classroom to talk about the Politics of Food. She talked
about the industrialization of food and what and why she has learned about “where
our food comes from.”
Tasting the Kambucha…
On June 5, we will be going on a field trip to the Fortwhyte center for a program to
learn about the wonderful world of GPS, GIS, and other technologies to help us
make the most of Manitoba’s great outdoors.

Job Profile Project
Grade 9 Mrs. Orbanski’s Career Development Class
Submitted by Caitlin Schott
What do you want to be when you grow up? This is the question that
the grade nine career development class investigated. Some careers the
students chose to do their projects on were farming, pharmacy, medical
doctor, mechanics, landscaping, helicopter pilot, fashion designer,
radio host, Conservation Officer and RCMP Officer.
The grade nines researched and compiled booklets about their jobs
beginning with an introduction page that reflects the student’s interest
in the job, such as why they want to thrive in this career. Next, the job
profile page and the training requirements page just is another part of
the research; the schools that offer it, which school has the best
programs, as well as the cost and length of training. The grade nines
also had a chance to put together 10 interview questions which they
asked professionals to answer. This turned out to be one the best parts
of the project. Some notable interviews came from Chrissy Troy, Dr.
Donnely, Local pharmacist Brian, Perry Hibbert, Helicopter Pilot
Derek Longley, Conservation Officer Ben Baranowski, and as well as
local farmers.
Students created posters and project boards, gather artifacts and
photographs and got together to display and share their work on the
morning of April 29 th . We began the morning with guest speaker
Constable John Klassen. He spoke to the class about the duties of an
RCMP Officer. He shared on the job stories and even demoed his taser.

The theme for this year’s gr. 11 ELA at ACI is heroism and facing adversity.
The students have read various forms of literature and extracted the themes from
several works (The Hunger Games, 1984, independent novels, short stories,
music/presentations, and poetry), and have had several opportunities to exercise
their writing skills and abilities. One of these projects was to create their own
superhero! Students were asked to brainstorm the characteristics of a
superhero, and then compare these traits to what they personally deemed to be
heroic traits.
Every Monday for five weeks the students were given the title to a story, and
had to write the epic saga, featuring their own created superhero in action of
course! Titles included, “The Great Escape…,” “It’s Not Easy Being a Superhero,”
and “My Greatest Weakness.” Once the stories were completed, students put their
editing skills to work and polished up their final drafts. They also took their
favourite story and, using Comic Life software on the school computers, made
their own comic books!
Not only did their superhero
creations come to life on
print, but students also
completed the final step of
the project – biographical
posters! These posters
(featured below) are
currently on display in the
classroom. They are all very
unique, representing multiple
interpretations of heroism.
Feel free to pop-in and check
out the work next time you’re
visiting the school
Next door, in Mr. Nickerson’s room, we spent a lot of
the month of May working on the MultiGenre Project.
Each student chose a topic that related to the
theme of heroism and facing adversity. Some people
focused on their own heroes, while others focused
on situations where people face adversity. Each
topic was researched, and that research was the
basis for a variety of writing tasks that we did. All
of these different writing pieces were collected to
tell the “story” of the research in a different way
than the boring old research essay we’re used to.
The pieces were collected, placed in an interesting
package, and then handed in.
The hand in basket was interesting on the due date,
filled with motorcycle helmets, comic books and cd
cases

Grade 9 Science – Edible Cells
Miss. Gullett
The grade 9 science class have been busy with many “hands-on” activities the past little
while. They have been studying biology, including plant and cell structures. To help
them understand on a deeper, more meaningful level, students worked both
independently and in pairs to create an edible cell! They had to create either a plant or
animal cell, and use food found in their houses to create their masterpiece! Definitions
and labels of organelles were also included on the projects. Some creative items used
were fruit roll-ups, red pepper jelly, jam, chocolate chips, a variety of gummy candies,
lemon cake, and jello!
The students really enjoyed this project. They all wrote individual reflections for their
portfolios, with one student stating, “This was the most fun I’ve ever had doing a science
project!”

May 17 – International Day Against Homophobia
This year, the theme for Grade 10 ELA students was Social Justice.
A theme like this leads to a lot of interesting discussions. One of
these discussions led to the decision in Mr. Nickerson’s English
class to present to the student body on May 17, the International
Day Against Homophobia.
The initial step in the presentation was research. We spent a lot
of time finding and discussing material. This was difficult, as
this topic, along with the associated topic of bullying has many
aspects.
We focused on information about the day, as well as trying to
inform people about terminology, issues and symbols associated
with the LGBTTQ community. Staff and students were asked to wear
pink, which has become a symbol of resistance to homophobic
bullying. We, as presenters, dressed in the colours of the rainbow,
which is a symbol of the LGBTTQ community.
As well, we wanted to encourage people to think about their
impact in our own community, here at ACI. One of the things that
came up in our discussion was a simple phrase, “Dude, that’s not
cool.” It is our hope that people use this phrase when they see
something that marginalizes, hurts or victimizes another person.
It’s not about lecturing, or guilt, but about mature, responsible
people holding each other accountable, and working together to
make our school community a safe and happy place to be.
The article and picture that appeared in
the Interlake Spectator, coupled with our
own personal reflections about the day
look great in our portfolios, and are a
nice reminder of our presentation, which
we are very proud of.

Hi, my name is Katheleen Mulroy and I am the Youth Addictions Counsellor with in the Evergreen School
Division. I work in the three Evergreen High Schools and I am in ACI on Tuesdays during the school year
and at the Gimli Community AFM office (642-5162) during the summer.
AFM provides school based services in over 60 schools across the province of Manitoba. As a part of this
service, Youth Addictions Counsellors like myself, provide prevention, education, assessment and
counselling services to youth and their families. Offering these services in the school environment makes it
easier for youth to access them and provides an opportunity for early intervention and prevention. This is
an exciting and highly successful initiative that I am proud to be a part of. Please do not hesitate to contact
me if you have any comments, concerns, questions or if you would just like to introduce yourself. Please
feel free to contact me at the school or leave me a message on my voicemail at 642-5162.
Are Alcohol/ Drugs Causing Problems for You?
People use alcohol or other drugs for many different reasons. When they are high, they feel relaxed,
confident and happy, and they don’t have to worry about problems. At least, that’s how life seems at the
time. But if you use alcohol or drugs you know sometimes things are different.
Asking yourself the following questions might give you some clues about how alcohol or other drugs may
be affecting you.
Have you ever had arguments with your parents/ guardians about drug or alcohol use?
Have you ever lied to friends or family to cover up your use?
Has your relationship with your friends or family changed because of your drug/alcohol use?
Have you ever felt badly because of something you said or did while under the influence?
Do you feel that people do not trust you anymore?
Have you stolen money, alcohol or other things from family or friends?
Do you have trouble concentrating or notice that your memory isn’t as good?
Are you involved in illegal activity?
Have your grades dropped?
Have you dropped activities which were once important to you?
France Trip
During spring break 15 grade 10-12 students from the French
program, along with Mrs. Fridfinnson and Mrs. Perry, went to
Europe. Despite a rough start, the trip was incredible. We went
to Paris first, where we went to the top of the iconic Eiffel Tower. We also visited
the Louvre, which is the most famous museum in the world. It holds
masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa and the Venus de Milo. We then took a six
hour ride to the French Riviera on the TGV, which is a high-speed train. The
Riviera was gorgeous. After the Riviera we headed off to Pisa, where we saw the
Leaning Tower of Pisa. After Pisa we went to Florence, then spent a day in
Rome, where we saw the Colosseum and the Trevi Fountain. We also visited
Vatican City, where we awed at the incredible painted rooms and the Sistene
Chapel. Since we missed the first day of our trip, we got to go on the extension,
which included Pompeii and the island of Capri. The Arborg group was joined by
the Gimli group, as well as a group from Boise, Idaho. It was definitely a trip that
we will never forget! The next French trip will be in three years (2014-2015), and
grade 10-12 French students will have the opportunity to go.
The Last Word: Study Tips
Preparing to study:
Gather the materials that you need.
• What resources are available to help you study for the test?
o Your course materials
o Study guide
o Practice quizzes/exams
• Once you have the materials, schedule your study time. Choose blocks of time
when you plan to study specific amounts of material.
Studying:
Any method of study requires:
• Repetition
o Repeat the information in your own words or draw images.
o Short, frequent study sessions provide ample time for repetition.
• Effort
o Effort is making a conscious effort to understand and remember the
information being studied.
o Make up questions and write out the answers. Make flashcards. Work with
a study group.
• Time
o There is no quick and easy way to learn.
o Do not wait until the last day to study!
Managing your time:
Define your goals and determine the effort required to achieve them.
Break your study time down into smaller parts.
Short, frequent study sessions result in greater recall of information than one
or two marathon study sessions.
Dealing with worry or anxiety:
If you worry so much about doing well on tests that it interferes with your studying:
Take a step-by-step approach. Begin to review well ahead of time.
If you learn the material well, you can recall it even when you are stressed.
Visualize success.
If you are nervous right before a test:
Get a good night’s sleep and eat a good meal before the test.
Do not try to study a large amount of material right before the test.
Arrive at the testing site on time but not too early.
Avoid people who are spreading anxiety about the test.
If you feel nervous or worried during a test:
Relax! Take long, deep breaths.
Do not think about fear. Focus on the present task.
Remember that you are doing your best. You feel anxious because you want
to do your best and this can actually provide you with energy.
