“Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover”

Dear Parents and Carers,
Deptford Green has been a busy place this summer! Along with packing
up the old building and putting the finishing touches to the new, there has also
been a visit of our guests from St Kizito in Uganda and we hosted a very successful
International Youth Conference during the Olympics. On the 23rd August there
were many yells of delight and a few tears as our Year 11 students got their results.
You may have seen that nationally results have come down this year,
as grade borders have gone up, so we were pleased that our results actually
improved. We had higher than ever numbers of students who achieved the top
grades. Two thirds of our students achieved 5+ A* - C, just under half achieved 5+
A*- Cs including English and Maths and nearly a third got 10+ A*-Cs. The progress
made by our students puts us comfortably in the top 10% of schools nationwide.
We are confident that our new Year 11 are going to perform even better
than this and their progress so far suggests they could be the best performing
year group the school has ever had. We are sure that they and all Deptford Green
students will be making the most of the wonderful opportunities afforded by the
new building and our excellent staff.
Our new sixth form (DGI) is open now, and is proving to be very popular.
DGI students are also taking on the important role of School Leaders in our new
House structure. Impressive banners for each House now hang proudly in the foyer
of the building, symbolising the aspirations of the House.
There are so many features of the new school we would like to share with you, so
do please come and visit us at one of our Open Events (details on the back page).
We look forward to seeing you then.
YEAR 11 BOAT
PARTY
Once the exams were over and the final assembly was held it
was time once again for the annual boat party to celebrate the
end of Year 11 and GCSE exams. This was a huge success thanks
to the hard work of Ms Samms, the pastoral leader. Students
(and staff!) looked great and a really good time was had by all
who attended. What a great send off, and a wonderful way to
say goodbye to those
who will be leaving
us. Of course this year
is the first year that
students will be able
to stay on at Deptford
Green by joining our
sixth form.

CELEBRATION OF
ACHIEVEMENT AT
GOLDSMITHS COLLEGE
Our fourth annual Celebration of Achievement was held at Goldsmiths College on Wednesday 11th
June. Each year Goldsmiths have kindly allowed us to use their Great Hall for free, and we have had inspirational
speakers from many fields. This year, speakers were our Chair of Governors Roswita Chesher
and we were honoured to have the Goldsmiths College Warden, Professor Pat Loughrie, who is very
keen to develop more connections with Deptford Green. By complete coincidence he used our school
motto in his speech! Great minds think alike!
A medal was awarded to one student from each year group in each subject for either achievement (i.e.
the progress they had made that year) or the best attainment. We haven’t space to name all 125 medal
winners here, but they should feel extremely proud of being chosen by their teachers.
Ms Cummings and Mr Moore then awarded the very exceptional students who had made outstanding
contribution for leadership, community and to their learning area. The prize winners for these were:
Dennis Ridaj
Teo Albert
Nastexo Abdi
Oscar Cartwright
Sheila Sam
Karolina Zukauskaite
Jena Dunmore
Shaun Thomas
Ayleigh Williams-Spooner
Jack Sheppard
Monique McPherson
Hok Wong
The final prizes, awarded by
Mr Campling, were for team
contributions. Nominations
for Team of the Year were:
Year 7 School Council, Year 8 Independent Learners and the Year 7 Football Team.
However the prestigious trophy went to all of the students in this year’s fantastic Guys and Dolls Summer
Musical.
Congratulations to all prize
winners, but also to all students
who know in their
hearts that they have done
their very best this year.
We are so proud of our
students and their commitment
to getting the most
out of their education. Not
everyone can be a prize winner,
but this time next year
it could be you!
If anyone didn’t recieve
their medal, please collect
it from Ms McCraith in the
main reception in Septem-
The Guys and Dolls team won Team of the Year
ber.

DGI INDUCTION WEEK
It is such an exciting time for Deptford Green School as we prepare to launch
our new sixth form, Deptford Green International. At the time of going to print
over 90 students had applied for a place at DGI, and the full enrolment process
started on exam results day.
We have embraced the talents of all of our Year 11 students to develop a strong
and vibrant sixth form with our local and global communities at its heart.
Students worked hard to secure good and excellent grades in all their exams,
which is the key to being accepted for a place.
Sixth form students will play a major role in the life of the school working with and alongside staff and
pupils within each Learning Area as we are launching our very own DGI Student Leaders who will have
enjoyable and stimulating roles and responsibilities in school which will further help to develop their CV.
Potential A–level students took part in an induction when they could sample A- level classes meet their
new teachers and join in discussions about their chosen subjects. They then visited the Natural History
Museum and the Science Museum in South Kensington to add to their real life experiences of science
in action.
There was also a week long induction for the IB Diploma students, our pioneers for the International
Baccalaureate Diploma which is at the heart of our International Sixth Form. Among other things they:
• performed a dissection of rats in IB Biology with Mr Powell
• expressed the meaning of a poem through plasticine -modelling in IB English literature with Mr
Thornton.
• discussed whether scarification piercings and tattooing of the body is decoration or mutilation in
Visual Arts with Ms Adare
At the end of the week we asked the students to design a poster that encapsulates the IB ethos with
international mindedness and the IB learner profile at its core. Pupils presented their ideas and it was
heartening to hear their commitment to world issues and global citizenship. Pupils were very enthusiastic
about having chosen the IB Diploma course and found the Induction week very helpful. For both of
the programmes we had great feedback.
“All the induction days were good because they helped us to be more aware of all that the IB is about!”
Rita Njoku
“It was incredibly informative and we learnt about all our subjects” Abiola Kasim
IB GOLDSMITHS LIBRARY
MEMBERSHIP
Our IB Diploma students will be using Goldsmiths university library for study and borrowing books. They
will be issued with their library cards in September.
During the IB Induction week they were taken on a
tour of the library and introduced to all the sections
of the library which will support them with their IB
Diploma course. They are the first group of sixth
form students in the area to be able to borrow books
from the Library. This is part of Goldsmith’s widening
participation outreach work which encourages
young people in the area to aim high and aspire to
go to university. We would like to thank colleagues at
Goldsmiths for extending our existing close partnership
further to include library links. It is fantastic that
DGI students can not only see Goldsmiths College
from the new school building but simply walk across
Fordham Park to use a university library.

IB TRIP TO PARIS
Prospective students and teachers of the International Baccalaureate
went on a short trip to Paris for a whistle-stop tour of
some of the city’s famous landmarks. We travelled by Eurostar
and stayed at a hostel in the bohemian quarter of Montmartre
with the magnificent cathedral of Sacre Coeur towering over
us. We spent the afternoon exploring Paris on foot, culminating
in a tour of the Louvre to feast our eyes on Ancient Greek
statues, Renaissance paintings and of course the enigmatic
Mona Lisa. In the evening we walked along the Champs Elysee
to the Eiffel Tower which erupted in a sparkly light display on
our arrival! We returned to London exhausted but inspired by
the beauty and majesty of the French capital.
The two day trip to Paris helped to harness a love of travel, and
to wonder at the creative beauty of another European capital.
INTERNATIONAL
PLACEMENTS FOR
STUDENTS
We will be offering opportunities for international work placements as part of
the CAS programme for both IB Diploma and A-level students at our sister school
St Kizito in Kampala Uganda. In July/August 2013 students could help out at a
primary school, HIV/AIDS centre or an orphanage. They will be developing their
leadership skills not only in Uganda but also in organising a range of fund raising
events during the year. We will also be sending the DGI students studying Spanish for the first time to
Spain for a week to immerse them in the culture and language.
DUKE OF EDINBURGH
AT DGI
Many DGI students will be able to take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Awards
programme. They will have a chance to volunteer service to individuals and
community, develop technical and practical skills as well as physical skills in areas
such as sport and fitness. Their social and personal growth will be enhanced by
working as a team to plan and take part in expeditions and excursions. This is
an exciting opportunity for sixth form students to develop their leadership skills
too.
CREATIVITY ACTION SERVICE
Our CAS motto is “Enrich the lives of others and learn about yourself’. With this is mind the compulsory
CAS section of the IB Diploma will involve our students in events, activities or trips that utilises their
Creativity (C), uses physical exertion or Action (A) and provides a Service (S). Hence, some of the projects
our IB Diploma students will be involved in are:
1) Timebank – setting up a Timebank where students from across the school offer voluntary services
2) Teach Sport – IB students will provide coaching skills on summer family festivals across the Borough
3) Reading Champions – Seniors will support pupils with their reading in class.
4) Renovating landscapes
5) Organising various community conferences on topical themes.

COMPLEMENTING LEARNING
FOR GIFTED AND TALENTED
It’s been another exciting and engaging term for the Gifted
and Talented students at Deptford Green.
There have been many activities for them to participate in,
to complement learning in the classroom. Years 7 and 8 experienced
the world and literature of Shakespeare on his
commemorative world day. They also had the opportunity to
go on an end of term trip to see ‘Bugs, 3D’ at the BFI IMax,
followed by the Natural History Museum’s highly acclaimed
‘Animal Inside Out’ exhibition. Year 9 G&T students loved
learning how to do First Aid. They also spent an amazing day
with Sky Sports and three Team GB athletes, including Tom
Davies (Judo gold medallist) and Fran Williamson (a Paralympic
swimmer), working not only on sport but also behaviour
and achievement. Year 10 got to visit the controversial and
challenging Tate Modern retrospective of Damien Hirst where
they could walk with real butterflies and see the most expensive
piece of contemporary art in the world - the diamond skull - close up. The Gifted and Talented team
are looking forward to a very exciting year ahead in the new school with a more high-profile role for
many G&T students and more events for parents to get involved in. Watch this space!
DESIGNS OF THE YEAR
EXHIBITION
On the 25th of June, Year 10 Design Technology Graphics pupils went on a trip to the Design Museum
to view the Designs of the Year exhibition. Everybody enjoyed looking at the exhibits and were able to
identify which ones impressed them the most.
“The exhibit that stood out for me was the Boeing 787 Dreamliner plane because it is made out of carbon
fibre materials instead of metals,”Kieron Manning-Johnson 10S.
“I liked the paintings because it showed me the Die-Cutting process used.” Shane Abrahams 10C.
“I found that the London 2012 Olympic Torch stood out the most to me,because of the shape and the
800 holes which it has to represent the 800 people who will carry it,” Sinem Salih 10C.
“I liked the electric car because it represents the future of technology also it’s a way to stop global warming,”
Jordon Laing 10D.
Most importantly, the trip took the subject of Design out of the classroom and into the real world,
putting the role of Design and Designers into context for our students.

DG GETS ARTS MARK AWARD
We are really pleased at Deptford Green to have achieved the Arts Mark.
It is a very prestigious award from Arts Council England that recognises
the high quality arts provision that we have here in school, including work
in Textiles, Art, Drama, Music, Dance and Design. I am thrilled that the
hard work and dedication of the teachers in our Arts subjects has been
recognised. They are a very hard working group of people with an absolute
focus on providing our young people with top quality experiences and
engaging them in learning about our diverse culture. At the heart of all
our work are also the positive relationships between our teachers and
students.
Our students did an amazing job on the day we were inspected for the
award, giving some really excellent interviews to our visitor from Arts
Council England. They spoke eloquently about their lessons and were
passionate about their learning.
The award means that quality arts provision will be enshrined in the school’s curriculum and that our
students will continue to receive the highest level of arts education and training.
The end of the school year has seen a lot of arts activities too with our production of Guys and Dolls,
an excellent Art Exhibition with work from both students and teachers and an open-mic music event.
We can’t wait to see the quality of arts provision soar in the new school with all our new facilities.
JOINING THE GUYS
AND DOLLS
Our summer musical this year was Guys and Dolls which was performed for
primary schools in matinee shows, then to sell-out audiences in the evenings.
Many staff and students had the catchy songs in the head for days afterwards,
and it was very hard to believe that such professional performances
could be put on by students aged just 11-16. The local newspaper the South
London Press was impressed too and
featured us!
Miss Hurley, our new Drama teacher
began work that week and tells her
view of what it was like from behind
scenes: “Starting at Deptford Green during ‘Show week’ was
an invigorating experience. The school was buzzing with a
contagious energy and the synergy between staff and pupils
was unlike any I had witnessed before, as they stood together
to create a performance that was both dazzling and endearing.
The transformative effect of the school play is something
that should never been underestimated. The difference in the
student’s confidence over the week was undeniable as was the
feeling of a school coming together as a community. Thank you
to the wonderful and
talented students, the
phenomenal Drama
and Music departments,
and the amazing technical
support. I am so looking
forward to working on the
next production.”

OLYMPIC THEMES AND FIELD
WORK IN GEOGRAPHY
During the summer term both Year 8 and Year 9 classes have been learning about the London Olympics.
We have investigated the history of the Olympics, why London won the bid, the advantages and
disadvantages of it and how London intends
to make it sustainable. Students have shown
a great interest and were clearly looking forward
to the real thing.
During the summer term Year 10 Geographers
have been on two field work trips.
The first was to Whitstable, Kent where we
investigated coastal management strategies.
The second was to the source and mid-section
of the River Darent, Kent. The students
became familiar with a variety of specialised
fieldwork techniques and really enjoyed
both experiences. This enabled them to
complete their controlled assessments in
Geography as well as prepare them for their
exams.
SCIENCE
CLUB
LATEST
It has been an exciting time to be a member of the science club, as these children have been finding out.
“We have been doing lots of practical work, I come every week and it is really fun and interesting. We
got to go to the Natural History Museum and Science Museum and at school we get to do stuff which we
cannot do during lesson times. I am glad I joined,” Oscar Cartwright 7De.
“Science club is awesome, everyone should come along. We have done loads of different things, so far
we have dissected a sheep’s eye, a whole rat and this week we got to cut up a sheep’s brain. It was so
cool!” Joe Dommala 7U.
“I like science club because it is fun and
educational, I have learnt about different
organs and touched a sheep’s eye.
I enjoyed the week we did different explosions
the best, we burnt a jelly baby
and it screamed and made a purple
flame,” Keevon Patrick 7U.
“I have been coming to science club
since the start and enjoy it more each
week, it’s very practical and good fun. I
laughed so much when we used the Van
de Graaff generator which made all my
hair stand on end,” Youcef Benarmdena
7U.

LA COUTRE FRANCAISE:
FRENCH FASHION SHOW
French teachers were away on the French home stay with
Year 10 at the time of going to print, but before that they
were able to tell us about a few of their fun lessons. For
instance a French fashion show was organised with Year 9
students to make the learning of ‘the clothes’ topic more
interactive and to enable them to practice the target language
for real. Students worked in small groups and prepared
the description of their chosen outfit. On the day
they all became top models on the catwalk and also had
to describe their partner’s outfit to the audience while being
judged by their classmates (look, walk and description
of clothes). The winning student was Alvin Tuitt who was
amazing on stage; he was one of a kind during the performance
closely followed by Kalim Osikoya. Bravo les garçons!
Everone all learnt a lot from the presentations and would
like to give special thanks to the Drama department for the
fabulous clothes, to Cherish Or and Amber Deroche, our
Year 10 photographers of the event, and to Mr Brunoir for the music and his assistance in organising
the event.
A group of Year 9 students also had the chance to visit the Institut Français in South Kensington in preparation
for their GCSE course next year. Pupils were introduced to all that the Institut has to offer; they
were given a tour of the fascinating multimedia library, followed by a presentation and quiz about the
history of French Cinema. After lunch and some delicious French pastries, we enjoyed a private screening
of the film Les Enfants de Timpelbach in the amazing new cinema. Students had a great day, and
were invited to visit the Institut again in the future.
TRANSITION
ACTIVITIES
A number of Year 7 Transition pupils went on
an exciting trip to Macaroni Wood in Gloucestershire
this term. Activities included cooking
a barbecue (and washing up!), a nightwalk and
mountain biking. Pupils also built their own
shelters, using techniques learnt, bizarrely, in
their English lessons. Everyone had a great time!
SPELLING BEE
On Friday 6th July, students in Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 took part in the second annual Spelling Bee. Students
and teachers were extremely impressed with the amount of hard work the contestants had put into
learning the words.
The competition, which ends with two finalists, had some tremendous feedback from the students
themselves. Kelly Aho in Year 10 was the overall winner getting herself an Amazon Kindle.
Kelly said “The “Spelling Bee’ really helps to get the words in your brain, and even the ones you don’t
think you know, you do. The final round really puts you under pressure though!”

SPORTS DAY
Sports Day 2012
proved to be one of
the most successful
to date with all year
groups turning up
in force providing
a superb carnival
atmosphere in the
impressive Crystal
Palace national
sports arena.
All pupils provided great support and representation of their
year group in a number of different track and field events over
the duration. Many school records were broken with pupils
performing well above expectation setting some really high
standards for years to come.
As well as individuals performing well on the day year groups
were also competing for two other annual awards,
‘Overall Year Group
Winner’ which the
Year 8’s won for lower
school and Year 10’s
for upper school.
The second award was
the ‘Best Supported
Year Group’ which this
year was possibly the
most difficult call as all
years wore their own
colours proudly and
really got behind their
competitors. At the
end of the day Year 7’s edged it making their first sports day at Deptford
Green School one to remember.
Well done to all that were involved! Next year we will be changing this so
that students compete in their houses, not year groups, and it will be very
interesting to see the results!
£1 MILLION ON TECHNOLOGY
FOR YOUR EDUCATION
Technology in schools will no longer be micro- managed by Whitehall. Michael Gove, Education secretary
has decided to withdraw the current programme of study and give teachers the opportunity to refresh
the curriculum, realising that as computers have become so widely used, many students may be able to
understand basic programming by the age of 16, and simple word processing is no longer appropriate.
ICT teachers will therefore be able to extend and enhance the work in other subjects. In the new school
building all subjects will have its own particular resourcing, including the latest Apple Mac technology for
Music and iPad tablets for PE. For more info on the ICT curriculum see our website.
Our MLE is powered by Fronter and have access via a Wi-Fi router supported by Babcock 4S who also
maintain the day-to-day technical provision within the school.

COMMUNITY
This coming school year is not only exciting because of the move to the new building but because of the
fantastic new initiatives to get our students to be more community-minded that DG is setting in motion,
led by Jackie Bygrave who is the Leadership Team member in charge of community links . Often our pupils
are only too aware of their rights and not aware enough of their responsibilities and so community
projects are a way to redress this. Some Year 10’s helped in Cinnamon Court Housing which care for the
elderly in Deptford, and sat with them, keeping them company for an hour a week. This was a very successful
initiative co-ordinated by
Miss Reid. We want to continue
and develop this kind of community
mindedness.
We are currently in the process of
compiling opportunities for our
young people to get involved from
September with many initiatives
in our community.
• DG is working alongside the
Rushey Green Timebank and Lewisham
Spice, a charity run by Localities Co-ordinator,
Joan Roach who works in conjunction
with Lewisham Council.
•We are also involved in Story Lab ‘Summer
Reading Champions’ where young people volunteer in libraries across the borough, encouraging children
to read and discuss the books they choose throughout the Summer. Great for CV’s!
• We are working with TeachSport, who engage pupil volunteers to assist sports coaches in “Park Active”,
which will be delivered in 20 Lewisham Borough Parks. This is a sports/fun activity project aimed
at families.
• We are also working with the political wing of New Cross
Youth Forum, looking at youth provision and resources for
young people in the New Cross Area.
DG will focus on charitable giving as well as charitable action
and a number of charities will be selected and supported by
pupils who will aim to raise awareness and funds, through
their involvement,
with some healthy
competition thrown
in to see which group
can raise the most
for their designated
charity! Watch this
space !
We also need parents to get involved. Anyone interested in helping
can contact Ms Bygrave or Miss Walker, the Parent Liaison
Officer who will also be asking for volunteers from the Parents’
Forum.
PARENTS’ FORUM
We had another very successful
forum in June with a good turnout.
Thank you so much to all of you who
attended. Richard Gadd, the chair
of the forum, opened the meeting
and also welcomed Musa Jama
to the meeting who is the Somali
Forum co-ordinator in school. Musa
is working with Deptford Green
Somalian parents and pupils to
promote positive relationships and
community. He is a Somali Project
and Youth worker with the London
Borough of Lewisham.
Mr Campling had given his apologies
as he was unable to attend on this
occasion but Miss Bygrave, one of our Leaders of Teaching, was at the meeting to address the agenda
and answer any questions parents had.
Miss Bygrave informed parents of up to date progress on the new school building and addressed other
issues including its use for community groups outside of core school hours, musical instrument lending
and bike riding. One particularly exciting issue Miss Bygrave brought up was the development of pupils
being given opportunity to give back to the school and the wider community through volunteering. In
the coming school year, you will be hearing more from Miss Bygrave - and your child/children - on this
subject. As Miss Bygrave said, sometimes our
young people know a lot about their rights but
not so much about their responsibilities.
The meeting closed with the feedback forms
reflecting the meeting had been a success. We
in the Autumn term. The next forum will be
school building!
DONATING
PCs TO “HEAL
THE WORLD” SIERRA LEONE
As staff and students prepare to move to the new building, Deptford Green School kindly will donate
computers from the former school site to schools in Port Loko and Masanga in Sierra Leone, West Africa.
Year 10 students, Khari Bedward and Ola Otun have been at the school since Year 7 and say that they
have made good use of the facilities for their PE BTEC course. Ola says that she is “looking forward to
using the computers in the new school during her music lessons” and Khari is grateful that students in
Sierra Leone will have “opportunities to use IT facilities during their lessons”.
Deptford Green School is donating the computers to a local children’s charity, Heal The World For Children,
who will be branching out internationally for the first time and shipping a 20ft container of school
and hospital supplies to Sierra Leone December 2012.

GLOBAL SCHOOL
PARTNERSHIP WITH
ST KIZITO SCHOOL, UGANDA
Mayor’s Reception: On June 14th at Deptford Green School was invited by the Daneford Trust to celebrate
its international education links with St Kizito School and meet other young people from the borough
who are also involved in volunteer work courses. Jen Mason and Shannon O’Neil, former Deptford
Green students, are heading for a month’s placement at Reach Out HIV/AIDs Centre and an orphanage
arranged by St Kizito School. We hope to develop short time volunteer work placements for DGI students
as part of the International Baccalaureate programme.
Reaccreditation for International School Award: In July we submitted our application for reaccreditation
for the full International School Award and will be hearing about this shortly. Students and staff gave
evidence on the impact that our global links had.
Tristan Gadd reflects at the end of Year 11: “In a world of economic and political dependence on one another
(countries), surely it is about time our education caught up with that. We all believe in a brighter
future and many would say that knowing about and understanding about others we can accomplish the
future we all desire. So by establishing this we can encourage our students to create links around the
world to enable students, teachers and our community to do so.”
Gregg Woodier, Science teacher, talks of the lessons to be learned in resourcefulness. “The partnership
with St Kitizo allows two disparate groups of students to find commonality in the enjoyment of science
by asking questions regardless of resources in school. Here we wonder at the resourcefulness of the St
Kizito community. They made helicopters from discarded mobile phones and other junk. ”
OLYMPIC TRIPS DURING
GLOBAL YOUTH EXCHANGE
In August our Ugandan exchange students came to the UK, staying
partly in the homes of the Y11 students who had visited them last year.
The students did a 5 day residential
on the coast doing out of bound activities,
raft building, took part in a
Shakespeare day and went to see
Richard III.
During the exchange, which coincided
with the Olympics, staff ran an “International Olympic Youth Conference”
here at the school, which all of our students were welcome
to attend. For three
days in August students
were able to join workshops
in poetry, art,
music, debating, and
sports and were even
given tickets to the Olympics, which Deptford Green had
been given by the Get Set Olympic Organisation!
Deptford Green was awarded a total of 142 tickets, and
many other trips to the olympics and paralympics took
place over the summer. We would like to thank the staff
and students who were involved in these programmes during
their summer holiday, particularly Wendy Bisiker who
organised the two week programme for the Uganda students,
as well as running the Olympic Conference.
