• Seminal early recordings! A heady concoction of West Coast soul, Latin
percussion, and jam-style tunes feature groovy organ and Santana’s
distinctive, high-pitched stratospheric lead guitar.
• On The Road To Woodstock features Santana standards as well as rare
tracks. These are some of the earliest recordings, before Santana hit it big
with a show-stopping performance at Woodstock and a subsequent classic
major-label debut album.
• Some cuts are blues-influenced, while others are lengthy jam-style tunes
with plenty of improvisation. But overall the music is already the latintinged
rock, featuring congas and timbales, that would later propel Santana
to international stardom.
• Dr. John is celebrated around the world as the living personification of
the rich musical heritage exclusive to New Orleans. On this double album
collection, he cooks up a unique blend that combines his creole roots with
blues, jazz, zydeco, boogie-woogie, and rock & roll.
• Originally a guitar player, Dr. John’s colorful career began in the 1950s
when he wrote and played on some of the greatest records to come out of the
crescent city, including recordings by Professor Longhair, Art neville,
Joe Tex, and Frankie Ford. A notorious gun incident limited his career as a
guitarist, forcing him to first take up the bass, and later concentrate on piano.
• After Hurricane Katrina bashed New Orleans in 2005, Dr. John initiated
generous relief fundraising concerts, recordings, and angry public words
of protest. In 2008 he released City That Care Forgot, which earned a
grammy Award for Best Contemporary Blues Album.
