• Mah Damba is a jeli muso; she belongs to the caste of the griots, the
professional musicians of the Mande world who are also genealogists,
chroniclers, and custodians of the epic tradition. She has been living in
France for many years, and regularly performs for European audiences.
• Mah carries on the family tradition, and for this recording she has gathered
three of her children: guimba Kouyaté on guitar, Sira Tounkara and
Woridio Tounkara on background vocals. All three have been immersed
in this musical universe since they were infants, and are regularly hired to
perform alongside the great figures of the Mande music scene.
• Wang Li grew up in Shandong, china. After his university studies, he
turned down the career his parents had intended for him and went to Paris
on his own. This is where he found his calling in music, becoming a jaw
harp virtuoso as well as an inspired composer.
• One of the oldest musical instruments in the world, the jaw harp is to be found
in many cultures. Its ancient roots bear witness to its magical essence. The
chinese harp, called kouxian (formerly huang) has survived amongst most
chinese minorities since the 14 th century. It is commonly used to express love.
He is also a master of the gourd flute, another ancient chinese instrument.
• The compositions on this fascinating album are the outcome of a dream
he had involving his companion, Sang, and the aquatic world. “Dreaming
provides infinite space, it is like plunging into the abyss.”
