Five (Personnel: Paul Desmond, Joe Morello, Eugene Wright) [1967] 2-CD set. Two CD live archive release.
On December 26, 1967, the classic Dave Brubeck Quartet (Paul Desmond on alto sax, Joe Morello on drums, and
Eugene Wright on bass) gave its final concert as a group. On this occasion, they appeared in Pittsburgh, and while
Columbia didn’t do a recording (a studio session had taken place on the 18th, but didn’t yield much that was interesting),
the concert was recorded and has been made available by the Brubeck Archives. In that live recording, The
Last Time Out - December 26, 1967, the four musicians made the best out of this last opportunity to play together,
in a final musical gesture that shows they were still at the top of their game. It is bound to attract the attention of
Brubeck fans and Jazz fans, given the fact that it marked the end of a celebrated quartet that had spanned some 18
years and given the 1960s one of its signature themes, “Take Five.” [Item Code: 72880 2-CD: $20.00]
Program. Jonathan & Darlene Edward’s 1957 debut album awarded them a 48 star review in Downbeat Magazine.
Their second recording, ‘Jonathan & Darlene In Paris’ won them the 1960 Grammy for best comedy album. Though
this award category somewhat bewildered them it never the less continued a 25 year recording ‘career’ which culminated
in this final album originally released in 1982. [Item Code: 72665 CD: $17.00]
An empathetic power of five is at work in the collaborative project known as Opus 5, working in the long shadow
of the great vintage quintets, ala Blakey and pre-electric Miles Davis. On the front line, tenor saxophonist Seamus
Blake and rising star trumpeter Alex Sipiagin - a Russian in NYC - are bolstered by pianist David Kikoski, drummer
Donald Edwards and another bold Russian, bassist Boris Kozlov. In the song set are compositions by band members,
George Cables’ ‘Think of Me’, ‘Braziliana’ by Toninho Horta, and the reborn Russian folk tune ‘Sokol’ honoring the
Russian roots within the band. [Item Code: 67160 CD: $19.00]
Wayne’s World (Personnel: David Binney, Eivind Opsvik, Nasheet Waits) [2011] John Escreet’s Criss Cross debut
is one of the singular recordings in the Criss Cross catalog. Out of Doncaster, England, and a New Yorker since 2006,
the 26-year-old pianist-composer deploys the talents of New York first-callers David Binney, who incorporates live
electronics into the flow as well as his alto sax, Eivind Opsvik on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums. Synthesizing
a broad template of sources into his own sonic vision, Escreet presents a stimulating, kinetic, heady program that
solidifies his reputation as a musical ground breaker rooted in the verities of groove and high craft. [Item Code:
Peter Beets, John Webber, Kenny Washington) [2010] Joe Cohn’s second Criss Cross outing is a swinging
affair. Joined by Dutch master pianist Peter Beets, and New York A-Listers, bassist John Webber and drummer Kenny
Washington, the young guitar veteran (who is the son of the iconic tenor saxophonist-composer Al Cohn) addresses
a strong program of first-rate, less traveled jazz and songbook standards, uncorking a string of inspired solos that
blend polish and vigor with a style that traverses a broad timeline of vocabulary on his instrument - he reaffirms his
position as a major voice on today’s playing field. [Item Code: 67162 CD: $19.00]
