album ‘Kenton Presents: Bill Holman’ (Capitol H6500), also in its entirety, as well as two tracks from the LP ‘Bill
Holman’s Great Big Band’ (Capitol ST-1464). This is an excellent testimony to the genius of Bill Holman as both an
arranger and a tenor saxophonist. Includes inside booklet. [Item Code: 67269 CD: $15.00]
Two splendid collaborations by the vocal trio of Dave Lambert, Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross with Count Basie or
members of his band. ‘Sing a Song of Basie’ (ABC/Paramount ABC223) is presented here in its original Mono version,
and not the ‘electronically rechanneled for Stereo’ one of some reissues which had worst sound quality. It showcases
the vocal trio singing all of the horn parts from the Basie band via multi-track recording, backed only by a rhythm
section of Basie-ites (with Nat Pierce filling in for the Count). On the ‘Stereo album Sing Along with Basie’ (Roulette
SR52018), the vocalists are accompanied by the whole Basie orchestra with the Count himself at the piano. As a
bonus, added is a version of ‘The Spirit-Feel’ from the same period (with Lambert-Hendricks & Ross accompanied again by Nat Pierce), as well as
the only two songs from a 1959 Basie concert where the vocal trio was invited to join the orchestra. Includes 20-page booklet with the complete
song lyrics. [Item Code: 72750 CD: $15.00]
the mythically rare H.M.V.HK series, ‘Made for Export only’. [Item Code: 28304 CD: $12.00]
Berigan, Jack Purvis, Skinnay Ennis, Dick Macie, Saxie Dowell, John Scott Trotter, Gus Mayhew, Bomo Sulser, Olly
Humphries, Arthur Fields, Paul Weston, Dick McDonough, Bob Mayhew) [1926-1931] Hal Kemp gained fame in
the 1930s for leading one of the most popular sweet dance bands, often featuring vocals by Skinnay Ennis, with a
major hit in ‘Got a Date With an Angel.’ During 1926-1931, Kemp’s young band occasionally played jazz and most
of its hottest recordings are on this CD. There are no famous soloists on the first 14 numbers, but the ensembles are
spirited and the brief solos fit the period music well. Cornetist Jack Purvis has a few good spots on the later records
and trumpeter Bunny Berigan is present on three tracks, taking his first recorded solo on ‘Washin’ the Blues from My Soul’ and being in memorable
form on ‘Them There Eyes.’ Fans of late-’20s hot dance jazz will certainly enjoy this release. [Item Code: 31660 CD: $12.00]
