Featuring the super rare ‘’Weary Blues’ album where Hughes’ incisive poetry was set to music by Leonard Feather’s All-Star Sextet and Charles Mingus and the Horace Parlan Quintet from two late 1950’s sessions. An early conceptual piece, ‘The Weary Blues’ highlighted New York life in Harlem at the end of the ‘50s painting a vivid story in words and also some fine jazz playing. The set also features Hughes’ spoken word versions of some of the tracks along with other sociallycharged pieces including the influential ‘I Have Known Rivers,’ which has been interpreted by jazz and soul exponents on many occasions since, as well as Hughes’ recollections of bars and boulevards and the emotive study of ‘’dark’’ America on the poignant ‘I Too.’ Finally, the collection closes with two Hughes interpretations by Bob Dorough. This is one of those but with souped up engineering to show off the new dimensional reality of stereo. It was chosen for release because of this. This is one of the favorite Francis Bay recordings. The sound is the medium being expressed. All tunes are Perez Prado classics, and a few are fairly jazzed up versions. Very fun to listen to. [Item Code: 72666 CD: $15.00] 1004 OSCAR MOORE PRESENTING OSCAR MOORE I Can’t Get Started With You • There’s A Small Hotel • Angel Eyes • To A Wild Rose • It’s A Pity To Say Goodnight • Tangerine • Sweet Lorraine • If You Were Mine • Taborra (Personnel: Leroy Vinegar) [1957] This rare Oscar Moore recording was one of the few he made in stereo. Recorded for Omega in 1957, it combines Oscar with Leroy Vinegar on bass. With digital enhancement, everything can now be heard. This is some fine Oscar Moore playing, which no fan of jazz guitar will want to miss. He was 26. [Item Code: 72677 CD: $17.00] 649 SONNY ROLLINS AND THE BIG BRASS, TRIO & QUINTET Grand Street • Far Out East • Who Cares? • Love Is A Simple Thing • What’s My Name? • If You Were The Only Girl In The World • Manhattan • Body And Soul • Sonnymoon For Two • Like Someone In Love • Theme From Symphony No. 6 ‘Pathetique’ (Collective Personnel: Henry Grimes, Specs Wright, Jimmy Cleveland, Gil Coggins, Wendell Marshall, Kenny Dennis, more) [1957-1958] Sonny Rollins’ debut album with a big band was nothing if not impressive. Producer Leonard Feather joined forces with arranger Ernie Wilkins to give Rollins a set of four orchestral showcases for his horn. The stellar brass section delivers a quality performance, but it is Rollins’ blowing and his enormous verve, virility and inventiveness that carry the load. The rhythm section on the big band date includes Dick Katz on piano, and drummer Roy Haynes, but the bassist on both sessions - trio and Big Brass - was the great Henry Grimes. Originally released by Metrojazz, the album shows Rollins to considerable advantage in both settings, and then, on the last track, he stars unaccompanied, full of fluency and freshness, on the tune indelibly associated with him - ‘Body and Soul’. The last session in this set was also a Feather production, recorded for Period <strong>Records</strong> in 1957. This time the setting is a quintet, with Jimmy Cleveland on trombone.
