Our quaint Main Street offers shops with a long history of serving the people of Western North Carolina. Jamison Jewelers is the oldest operating business on Main Street opening for business in 1905. With 105 years of service to the people of Franklin, today they are one of Franklin’s premiere jewelry stores. Mike Stewart bought the shop in 1984. They work with the finest designers in the world to create the most unique and valued jewelry. The diamond center offers wonderful creations for every occasion. Macon Furniture Mart has served the folks in Franklin for over 5 decades furnishing homes of families just like yours. Today Macon Furniture Mart and Buck’s Furniture continues the tradition of quality furniture at affordable prices. The store opened its doors in 1954. 2006 saw the retirement of owner Branch “Buck” Buchanan. And finally anchoring the 50 year plus tradition is People’s On the Square. People’s was founded in 1957 and still offers quality clothing at reasonable prices today. Mr. J.C. Jacobs has seen many changes since opening his doors. His desire was never to turn a customer away. Today People’s continues to offers men & ladies clothing, work apparel, shoes & boots. The operational management of the business today rests with J.C.’s daughters. They seek to uphold the standards their dad set for the business all those years ago. The Burrell Building, which was the original home of the Scottish Tartans Museum has recently been renovated into a state of the art Town Hall housing Franklin’s Town Officials. Macon County Historical Museum Located on Main Street in downtown Franklin, this museum is housed in the J.R. Pendergrass building which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building is an excellent and little altered example of early twentieth century retail store design. The building is complemented by original fixtures from the old store and a fascinating variety of artifacts and photographs illustrating Macon County’s past. Admission is free. Visitors are always welcome and conducted group tours can be arranged on request. Open year round. 36 West Main Street • 828-524-9758 www.maconnchistorical.org Ruby City Gem Museum This museum located in downtown Franklin has specimens, artifacts, ivory carvings, rare gems, and more. You can see hundreds of spheres handmade from different types of stone by the founder of the store. “The World’s Largest Sapphire” weighing 385 pounds as well as one of the largest gem quality rubies found in the area (162 carats) are on display. Be sure to see an authentic shrunken head, a section of local arrowheads and the black-light section is a must see. Free to the public and cameras are welcome. Open April 1 - December 26. 130 East Main Street • 828-524-3967 www.rubycity.com/museum.html Explore Our History The Franklin Gem & Mineral Museum Located in Franklin’s historic “Old Jail” on Phillips Street across from the Macon County Courthouse, this museum has thousands of specimens on display including a local ruby weighing 2 ¼ pounds! There are six rooms dedicated to the cataloging and preservation of gem and mineral specimens from around the world as well as North Carolina and of course Macon County - home to the famous Cowee Valley where rubies and sapphires have been found for over 100 years! Admission is Free. The museum not only displays Scottish Tartans, but covers various aspects of the Scottish experience—culture, history, dress, migration and military. Visitors are invited to view their family tartan, connect with their clan, and learn about the history of Highland Dress. The museum is complete with gift shop. Admission $1 adults, 10 and under free.
