YOUR LETTERS
Councillors seem confused
The reasoning of Cr Barnes
for voting a ‘‘temporary yes’’ to
$1 Million velodrome financial
support is not logical.
If you are unsure about the
merits of a project, you should
not vote to support it until you
are sure. Votes are not ‘temporary’.
You are making decisions
on public record that are there
forever.
The four conditions should
be met before the project comes
to you for consideration. You
and Council staff are not there
to assist the promoters of a
project to find ways for it to
happen. If you are unsure, you
Council’s maths questionable
What part of elementary
mathematics does the Waipa
District Council not understand?
Firstly they talk of a grant
of $3.5 Million for the
velodrome, which ratepayers
could not afford; now it’s down
to $1 Million and, wow, this is
not going to cost ratepayers a
thing. It is all covered by an
extra ratepayer and because of
this new ratepayer (i.e. the
velodrome) 25 new houses will
be built that also will help
Council to cover the $1 Million
grant.
Unfortunately, over the 20
year loan period this grant
will cost ratepayers $1.665
Million if the houses are not
built (which is highly likely
considering the number of
houses for sale in the district
at the moment), then the loss
of rateable income could be in
the vicinity of $40,000-$53,000
which present ratepayers will
have to pick up.
And if the houses are built,
don’t forget the impact they
will have on the sewerage in
Cambridge or the water in Te
Awamutu.
The cold, hard facts are that
Waipa cannot afford even $1
Million. The supposed returns
fall far short of what it will
cost.
Exposing water to air solves chlorine issues
Re. J. Perrett’s letter ‘Concern
over water’ in the Courier.
Where a water supply system
is provided by a local
authority it must be provided
in accordance with New Zealand
and in some cases World
Health Standards.
Despite J. Perrett’s reference
to drawing our water from
Pirongia’s fresh water streams,
natural water is never absolute-
should be telling them to go
back to the drawing board and
figure it out themselves.
Cr Simmons has guessed the
size of the project and may have
been misinformed and he has
not checked that out. Cr Gower
ought to know the difference
between assurances and facts.
He has been happy to wage a bet
of ratepayers’ money on
assurances that cannot be
proven and are set up to remain
mere promises that are, and
may remain, empty.
As usual, Cr Wilson is the
only Te Awamutu Ward councillor
who was prepared to
ly pure.
Added to which is the kilometres
and kilometres of
pipelines necessary to bring the
water to our garden gates.
As water is one of the greatest
solvents and will dissolve
many substances in solid,
liquid or gaseous form, it
follows therefore that some sort
of treatment must be given
before the water is considered
consider the true understandings
and wants of the ratepayers
and his obligation to use
ratepayers’ money wisely. He is
the Mr Spock of the WDC — he
considers logic.
Council staff cannot properly
forecast anything — any
prediction is based on ‘ifs and
buts’. The Mayor should not be
trying to convince other
Mayors and other councils to
put money into projects which
are outside their ratepayers’
districts.
Could someone please
explain to me why it is that
when a property developer
fit for human consumption.
One of these treatments is
the application of chlorine.
Chlorine is an effective germicide
and used in the chlorination
of municipal water
supplies.
Unfortunately, it has a
strong chemical odour that
some people find objectionable.
However, the smell soon
dissipates in fresh air, so my
wants to create 25 new houses,
that person is considered evil
and is charged through the nose
by the WDC for all the trouble
caused, whereby when all they
have done is tried to make
homes for people.
In this case a velodrome
merely promises 25 new homes
and the red carpet is rolled out
for the fat cats to drive their
Bentleys down.
Councillors, your community
is laughing at you, the
sports people are laughing, big
business people are laughing.
JAMES PARLANE
Abridged
suggestion to the Perretts
would be not to drink directly
from the tap but to fill an open
top jug from the tap, then pop it
in the fridge for a little while —
perhaps even fill the jug before
going to bed at night then they
will have water ready for
drinking and filling their son’s
water bottle in the morning.
It works for us.
