Museum marks paper’s 100 years in print

Museum’s exhibition
‘100 Years in Print’ was
opened on Friday.
The exhibition
focusses on the centenary
of Te Awamutu
Courier which was
marked in April.
Among those at
Friday night’s opening
were appreciative present
and past Courier
staff members, including
John Warburton,
grandson of AG
Warburton — founder of
the Waipa Post, forerunner
to the Courier.

Print’— honouring the
Courier with this exhibition
in the year in
which we celebrate the
centenary of the newspaper
and printing business
started by AG
Warburton in 1911.
We had a highly successful
centenary function
and centennial publication
last month. We
have received many
humbling messages of
congratulations and
goodwill, both for the
occasion of the centenary
and for the staff’s
efforts in honouring
this.
This work has gone
on, in particular for editorial
staff members
Cathy Asplin and Dean
Taylor, who have served
as the link between the
Courier and Stephanie
Lambert, senior curator
at Te Awamutu
Museum, as she went
about gathering some
the material and memorabilia
needed to mount
the exhibition.
The Courier has
enjoyed a strong
relationship with the
museum for many years,
due to both the efforts of
museum staff and to
Courier staff members
like the late Ted
Hunwick, who had a
strong interest in history
and Dean Taylor,
who has augmented a
strong interest in history
with hands on work
on the Museum Trust
Board.

deposited in the
museum and the collection
is complete up until
2004.
The early issues are
very fragile after all
these years and Museum
staff are in the process of
developing a digitised
index which is being
posted on the Museum
website as it is
completed.
Archivist Cat Jehly is
overseeing this further
strong link between the
Courier and museum.
The centenary publication
reminded us just
how many readers
regard the town’s history
highly for its significance
and interest and
a regular ‘Blast from the
Past’ column is now
