This is the “action beach” where young and old come to enjoy the Atlantic Ocean, socialize under shady palm trees or nap in the sun. You can rent everything you need, from loungers and rafts, to sailboats and wave runners. For early evening entertainment, head over to the nightly celebration on Pointe Resort is the perfect starting point for everything under the sun. Key West’s famed Mallory Square. The whole family will enjoy jugglers, palm readers, contortionists and street performers, plus the main event, a breathtaking sunset. DAY THREE Play on the water. If you dare, try the hottest new water sport— kite boarding. But start with lessons to learn how to ride this small board while holding onto a parachute-like kite. Soon you’ll be speedsailing, riding waves and flying through the air for 10-feet or more. While you’re in a sporting mood, head back to the resort for a pickup game of beach volleyball, badminton or shuffleboard. Or try a friendly game of pool in The Beatle’s Hut (a.k.a. The Pool House). The Heritage House Museum and Robert Frost Cottage also offer antiques and gardens where visitors can enjoy recordings of Robert Frost’s poetry. DAY FIVE Enjoy the wildlife. Start your day with breakfast at Blue Heaven, 729 Thomas St., one of the most casual restaurants anywhere. Try “Breakfast with the Roosters” coral reef in America and keeps the climate warm all year round. “Water is king here,” says Ted Bolstad, resort manager. “All HVC members thoroughly enjoy the diverse water activities.” Reserving a week at Hyatt Windward Pointe Resort also gives you access to Hyatt Key for banana, pecan or strawberry pancakes with pure maple syrup and discover a Key West tradition as live roosters and chicks play underfoot. Then head to Key West’s Historic Seaport for a kayak or Jet Ski rental. Or explore the island’s famed coral reefs and protected habitats as part of a snorkeling, eco-tour or birding adventure. DAY SIX Make memories. Take the family on day trip to Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park. This Civil War-era fortress is the perfect setting for history, snorkeling, camping, bird watching and more. Arrive by seaplane to see dolphins, sharks, spotted rays and tarpon, or even shipwrecks and coral reefs from above. On land, you can splash around in the moat surrounding the fort. Even if you didn’t catch anything, you can still enjoy superb seafood at one of Old Town Key West’s classic eateries, Café Marquesa in the Marquesa Hotel, 600 Fleming Street. The 50-seat restaurant, serving fine seafood and cuisine, has a theatre-kitchen set behind a trompe l’oeil wall of a kitchen scene. There are so many activities to do in Key West that a week is barely enough time to fit it all in. As 15-year veteran guests of Hyatt resorts on the island, they jumped at the opportunity to become owners at Hyatt Hacienda del Mar even before it opened, knowing that the flexibility offered by Hyatt Vacation Club and Hyatt’s hallmark service would perfectly accommodate their annual Christmastime family reunion. With four sons and daughters-in-law, plus lots of grandchildren, the Bashes’ extended family can take up quite a bit of space. They knew HVC would be a great way for the family to be together without having to book a whole wing of hotel rooms for the entire Bash Bunch, says Fran Bash. The Bashes purchased three weeks at Hacienda del Mar, but because of the flexibility of HVC’s points system, they have developed a unique way to allocate their vacation time. “We double up on our accommodations for Christmas week by trading our New Year’s week, and then get a week in the spring sometime, usually April,” says Fran Bash. While the Christmas week at Hacienda del Mar has become an etched-in-stone family tradition, the ability to trade points for stays has at other select Hyatt properties also has paid off for the Bashes. One year, they were able to trade their fixed week in the spring into The Hotel Exchange Program for a vacation for their sons. “The boys went out to California,” Fran Bash says. “They used our points to stay at the Hyatt Regency Palm Springs.” The idea of always having a set place for their family reunion was the key reason the Bashes chose to buy into HVC’s Hacienda del Mar. And their 15 years of memorable experiences at Hyatt resorts in Puerto Rico made their decision even easier. “We bought our unit from looking at a picture, and we love it,” Fran Bash says. “It’s our home away from home.” TOGETHER AGAIN: The Bash family Christmastime reunion at Hyatt Hacienda del Mar has become a tradition.
