Discretionary Funds come from the Community Foundation’s unrestricted endowment and are distributed twice annually via a competitive grantseeking process. The unrestricted endowment allows us to respond to the changing needs of the community by directing funds to where they are needed most. Donor-Advised Funds are created by individuals and organizations who are interested in establishing a charitable legacy and who want to be able to make recommendations that change over time regarding the charitable beneficiaries. Today, supporting a local school or non-profit organization might be your top charitable priority. Later in life, providing support for Alzheimer’s research or literacy initiatives might be of greater interest to you. A donor-advised fund provides you with flexibility–as your life changes, so can your charitable impact. Children learn through active play at the Children's Museum of the Ohio Valley. Donor-Designated Funds are established by individuals or organizations who wish to support a specific charitable entity (or multiple entities) that are significant to them. Thus, these gifts come to the Community Foundation specifically earmarked for certain charitable interests and the donor’s original charitable intent is served in perpetuity. Scholarship Funds are created for reasons as varied and interesting as the donors and students themselves. A scholarship fund can be directed to students from a specific school (elementary, secondary or post-secondary), students who will attend a specific post-secondary school, students from specific counties, students who are interested in a specific career...the possibilities are endless. President Bush signed the Pension Protection Act of 2006 into law in the late summer of 2006. This Act includes a number of new, more stringent regulations regarding the administration of scholarship funds. The Community Foundation is your resource for information on the proper creation and administration of scholarship funds.
