President’s Message
Greetings Alumni and Friends of Gogebic Community College
As the calendar year is coming to a close, our academic year at GCC is in full swing.
Our enrollment is up this year, and we have set a new record with the cumulative
number of credits taken by students. In our current economy, that is not surprising as
people see the value in continuing their education or following a new career path
that requires additional education. It’s a testament to GCC that we provide solid and
affordable education.
In a recent study conducted by the National Center for Education
Statistics data was collected from nearly 6,700 institutions on students (enrollment
& graduation rates), tuition charges, program
completions, faculty, staff, and finances. GCC was
compared to 26 similar community colleges
throughout the Midwest. The report showed GCC was
better than average in numerous areas compared to
this peer group, including rates of tuition, graduation
and retention. We are proud of this benchmark, and
share the credit with our faculty and staff for their
dedication and commitment to our students.
Included in this newsletter are those who have
recently retired from GCC, and those who have joined
us. As the names and faces changes, the one thing that
remains constant is the focus on the reason we are all here, the students.
There are many ways the students benefit from their experiences at GCC.
In order to continue to provide them with the latest technology, financial assistance,
expanded programs and services, we again are prompted to ask our alumni and
friends for gifts to the Annual Campaign drive We seek your support, at whatever level
you feel appropriate. In numerous respects, our level of participation among alumni
and friends is as significant as the number of dollars raised.
We hope you enjoy the updates on your classmates and your college. The
campus doors are always open for a visit from our alumni and friends.
Sincerely,
James A. Lorenson
Zivic Donates Painting to GCC
Ironwood native Bill Zivic donated one
of his original paintings to GCC. His
wife, Carol, attended GCC and the college
and the Ironwood area still hold a
special place in both of their hearts.
Currently residing in Arizona, the Zivics
have fond memories of their time spent
in Ironwood.
Before indulging in his passion
for art full-time, Bill served in the U.S.
Military in Korea and Germany. He worked
for a time in the Geneva Mine, then
moved with his family to Arizona. He was
inspired by Arizona’s vast beauty and history,
and began capturing the West in
bronze sculpture and on canvas. After
working for the Tucson Police Department
as an officer and a sketch artist, he and
Carol opened an art studio in Tucson and
it was there that Bill had the opportunity
to focus on his artwork. His subject matters
include the landscape of the
American West, its history and lore.
Memorial Nursing Scholarship
established at GCC
An endowed scholarship has been
established at Gogebic Community College
in memory of Garfield R. “Skip” Drake, III.
According to Skip’s family, he always had a
love of nursing that started when he worked
with the Disabled Vets Program. “He would be
glad to know that now he is helping others who want to pursue a
career in the nursing field,” said his mother, Cleo Mary Drake.
Skip attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from
Former student pays a visit
GCC) who attended GCC for the 1998-1999 academic year,
visited Ironwood this past summer and stopped at GCC to see
campus and visit friends. Ishisone transferred from GCC to the
University of California-Berkeley to complete her bachelor’s
degree before returning home to Japan. She was in the U.S. this
past year working on her PhD as the 2009 -2010 Fox International
Fellow at Yale and will complete her PhD at the University of
Tokyo through the Graduate School of Frontier Science. She had
previously completed her Master’s at the University of Tokyo as
well and has travelled the world extensively doing research.
While a student at GCC, Michiko lived with Jeanean and
Bruce Greenberg and son, Liam.
7.
Luther L. Wright High School in 1967. He then attended Gogebic
Community College.
A dedicated veteran, Skip was a life member and past
commander of Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and served in
the Post 5 Honor Guard, a life member of Ironwood Veterans of
Foreign Wars Post 1823, and life member and past commander
of Northland Chapter No. 66, Disabled American Veterans.
The endowed scholarship will be awarded each year to
a full-time or part-time student in the nursing program or the
“We wanted to establish this scholarship at Gogebic so
that Skip’s memory could live on,”said Cleo Mary Drake. “Now he
can help those that are interested in helping others.”

GCC Alum Receives International Award
GCC Alumnus David Lindquist, class of 1977, and his employer,
University of Minnesota, received the 2010 Synergy Award for
Program of the Year from The International Collegiate Licensing
Association (ICLA). This honor is awarded annually to an exceptional
“team”on campus or from a conference. The nominees must demonstrate
an extraordinary commitment to collegiate licensing.
Dave is employed as the trademark licensing director at the
University of Minnesota (UM). Prior to working for UM, he gained
invaluable experience as a buyer for one of Minnesota’s top retailer,
athletics department concessionaire and team store operative. His
extensive experience and knowledge propelled him to the director
position, and the UM brand has flourished as a result ever since.
With the opening of Minnesota’s new on-campus football
home, TCF Bank Stadium, came an abundance of opportunities for
Lindquist and the Golden Gopher staff to increase royalties for the
program. The university saw a 16 percent increase in that department,
and a pair of initiatives spearheaded by Lindquist was crucial
in making it happen. According to Dave, “I strongly believe that my
GCC education prepared me for success in my profession and GCC
played a major role in my ability to succeed.”
Dave resides in Monticello, Minnesota with his wife of
twenty-five years, Julie. Their daughter Melissa is a senior at
Concordia College in Moorhead, MN and their daughter Kristina is
a senior at Monticello High School.
GCC Annual Campaign
Gifts for scholarships, endowments,
and bequests are critical to maintaining
the programs, services and facilities
that GCC offers. There is also an
immediate need to sustain the student
programs, faculty development, and
campus improvements.
There is where contributions
to the Annual Campaign play a critical
role. Your Annual Campaign
contribution is put to work today to
support and develop opportunities
that are not funded from our general
operating budget or tuition –
opportunities that are more important
than ever as state
support declines.
