Our enrollment is up this year, and we have set a new record with the cumulative number of credits taken by students. In our current economy, that is not surprising as people see the value in continuing their education or following a new career path that requires additional education. It’s a testament to GCC that we provide solid and affordable education. In a recent study conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics data was collected from nearly 6,700 institutions on students (enrollment & graduation rates), tuition charges, program completions, faculty, staff, and finances. GCC was compared to 26 similar community colleges throughout the Midwest. The report showed GCC was better than average in numerous areas compared to this peer group, including rates of tuition, graduation and retention. We are proud of this benchmark, and share the credit with our faculty and staff for their dedication and commitment to our students. Included in this newsletter are those who have recently retired from GCC, and those who have joined us. As the names and faces changes, the one thing that remains constant is the focus on the reason we are all here, the students. There are many ways the students benefit from their experiences at GCC. In order to continue to provide them with the latest technology, financial assistance, expanded programs and services, we again are prompted to ask our alumni and friends for gifts to the Annual Campaign drive We seek your support, at whatever level you feel appropriate. In numerous respects, our level of participation among alumni and friends is as significant as the number of dollars raised. We hope you enjoy the updates on your classmates and your college. CAMPUSnews Zivic Donates Painting to GCC Ironwood native Bill Zivic donated one of his original paintings to GCC. His wife, Carol, attended GCC and the college and the Ironwood area still hold a special place in both of their hearts. Currently residing in Arizona, the Zivics have fond memories of their time spent in Ironwood. Before indulging in his passion for art full-time, Bill served in the U.S. Military in Korea and Germany. He worked for a time in the Geneva Mine, then moved with his family to Arizona. He was inspired by Arizona’s vast beauty and history, and began capturing the West in bronze sculpture and on canvas. After working for the Tucson Police Department as an officer and a sketch artist, he and Carol opened an art studio in Tucson and it was there that Bill had the opportunity to focus on his artwork. His subject matters include the landscape of the American West, its history and lore. New Faces at GCC Kelly Marczak Director of Institutional Development Ms. Marczak joined GCC as the Director of Institutional Development and Foundation Executive Director in April, 2010. Ms. Marczak received her Associate of Arts degree from GCC, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University. Her professional experience includes marketing, public relations, and foundation development. Karen Balyeat, R.N., BSN, MSN Allied Health Instructor Mrs. Balyeat joined GCC in August, 2010 as an Allied Health Instructor in the Nursing Program. She is licensed as a Registered Nurse in Michigan, has a Bachelor of Science degree from UW- Green Bay, Master of Science Degree in Nursing, specializing in nursing education, from Indiana Wesleyan University. Ms. Balyeat has twenty-six years of professional work experience in the nursing field. The painting he created for GCC, “Mountain Man”, includes his signature trait of hiding images in the background of the painting. There are nine images hidden in this painting, including the ‘GCC’ initials. 3. Artist Bill Zivic’s “Mountain Man” is now on display above the fireplace in the David G. Lindquist Student Center on campus. His work is housed in the Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, Roy Rogers Museum, White House Archives, and now in the David G. Lindquist Student Center on campus at Gogebic Community College. Kady Stone Business Instructor Mrs. Kady Stone is a Business Instructor at GCC. She earned her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Michigan. She resides in Bessemer, Michigan with her family. Dennis Svoke Computer Assisted Drafting Dennis Svoke holds a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education (Northland College, Ashland, WI.) and an Associate of Applied Science in Computer Aided Design Technology (Gogebic Community College) Mr. Svoke has 22 years of industry experience as a CAD Drafter and General Engineering Coordinator, and eight years of Adjunct instruction in the CAD program at Gogebic Community College. Apryl Mateas English Instructor Ms. Apryl Mateas holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Master of Arts Degree in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Her teaching experience includes English Composition I and II, Creative Writing and Literature at Waubonsee Community College in Illinois and College of DuPage in Illinois. continues on page 4
