Memorial Nursing Scholarship<br />
established at <strong>GCC</strong><br />
An endowed scholarship has been<br />
established at <strong>Gogebic</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />
in memory of Garfield R. “Skip” Drake, III.<br />
According to Skip’s family, he always had a<br />
love of nursing that started when he worked<br />
with the Disabled Vets Program. “He would be<br />
glad to know that now he is helping others who want to pursue a<br />
career in the nursing field,” said his mother, Cleo Mary Drake.<br />
Skip attended Ironwood schools, and graduated from<br />
Former student pays a visit<br />
Michiko Ishisone, (pictured with Jeanne Graham, Interim Dean<br />
of Students and Director of Admissions and Public Information at<br />
<strong>GCC</strong>) who attended <strong>GCC</strong> for the 1998-1999 academic year,<br />
visited Ironwood this past summer and stopped at <strong>GCC</strong> to see<br />
campus and visit friends. Ishisone transferred from <strong>GCC</strong> to the<br />
University of California-Berkeley to complete her bachelor’s<br />
degree before returning home to Japan. She was in the U.S. this<br />
past year working on her PhD as the 2009 -2010 Fox International<br />
Fellow at Yale and will complete her PhD at the University of<br />
Tokyo through the Graduate School of Frontier Science. She had<br />
previously completed her Master’s at the University of Tokyo as<br />
well and has travelled the world extensively doing research.<br />
While a student at <strong>GCC</strong>, Michiko lived with Jeanean and<br />
Bruce Greenberg and son, Liam.<br />

Luther L. Wright High School in 1967. He then attended <strong>Gogebic</strong><br />
<strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong>.<br />
A dedicated veteran, Skip was a life member and past<br />
commander of Ironwood American Legion Post 5, and served in<br />
the Post 5 Honor Guard, a life member of Ironwood Veterans of<br />
Foreign Wars Post 1823, and life member and past commander<br />
of Northland Chapter No. 66, Disabled American Veterans.<br />
The endowed scholarship will be awarded each year to<br />
a full-time or part-time student in the nursing program or the<br />
Nurse Aid Training Program.<br />
“We wanted to establish this scholarship at <strong>Gogebic</strong> so<br />
that Skip’s memory could live on,”said Cleo Mary Drake. “Now he<br />
can help those that are interested in helping others.”
