Dear ACEC Members,
I am delighted to report that the past 12 months
have been very good for both the consulting
engineering industry in Canada and for our
national association.
From an industry perspective, our member firms
report having been very busy – and many busier
than they have ever been. The 2006 ACEC
Benchmarking survey results reflect a design
industry that has established positive momentum
and shows significant signs of economic health.
Moreover, the new federal government has
made investments in infrastructure a national
priority and has provided significant funding for
infrastructure renewal. This will further strengthen
the business climate and will be favorable to
member firms in the short and medium term.
Of particular importance to our member firms,
the National Guide to Sustainable Municipal
Infrastructure (InfraGuide) has published a
recommended InfraGuide “Best Practice”
for Selecting a Professional Consultant that

is in complete harmony with the principles
of Qualifications-Based Selection QBS. Also,
Canada remains among the four largest exporters
of engineering services in the world.
From an association perspective, the past year has
been marked with a series of new and innovative
initiatives that are adding value to the ongoing
work of the association. With the publication of
the InfraGuide “Best Practice”, the association
launched a series of projects and activities to
promote the InfraGuide “Best Practice” both
within and outside the industry. The association
also continues to expand its government relations
work to ensure that our industry is present and
visible to key national decision-makers and
opinion-leaders. What has been particularly
impressive is how well our Member Organizations
and the national association are working together
and speaking with one voice to promote and
defend our industry. Moreover, the financial
performance of the association has been excellent
and ACEC has generated an operating surplus by
focusing efforts on priorities and generating some
new revenues.
In closing, I would like to express my sincere
appreciations to the many people who have
made the past year so enjoyable and successful
– my colleagues on the Board, the leaders in our
Member Organizations and, especially, the very
capable and dedicated staff at the ACEC office.

our efforts in pursuing the ACEC mission.
