Public Speaking Over the last week, Years 4 – 12 competed in the heats of the AB Paterson competition. Congratulations to all the students for their efforts and hard work in preparing their speeches and representing the school. A special mention to Lily Beechey, Italia Malik and Jasmine Rasmussen who have made it through to the final competition next week. Caitlin Douse Head of SY English Chiara iCentre ‘more than just a library’ ‘more than just a library -‐ a learning centre of information, instruction, immersion, inquiry and innovation’ Scholastic Book Fair Commences November 5 Coming to Chiara in November is our Scholastic Book Fair. Books will be on sale from 8.30am to 4pm from Monday November 5 to Thursday November 8. Any parents who are able to assist before or after school with sales would be most welcome. Library Link Our new app that links you to your library on your iphone, ipod, android, ipad or laptop –. The Library Link mobile application is now available for all our students and staff to view and renew your library resources on the go. Library Link gives our students and staff the ability to: • Search for available resources • Check alert messages for overdues or holds • View library information such as location and opening hours Page 4
• Scan ISBNs or barcodes to automatically retrieve resources from the system • View the library's latest resources • View and place a renewal for loaned items. Students can be assisted to set up Library Link by any member of the Chiara iCentre team. Cybersafety Wondering how you can best support your child with technology. The College has sent up a webpage with links to websites with comprehensive information for students and parents on managing the online world. Issues such as cyber bullying, staying smart online, finding out about the latest popular online activities, protecting your personal information, managing your student’s use of computers and ways you can stay up-‐to-‐date with the latest developments in technology. Year 7 Reader’s Cup Team The team members are: Etelini Roberts; Hanna Baker; Siaan Charles and Caitlin Hutcheson and they are now busy reading and preparing to represent Assisi Catholic College at the Catholic Schools Readers Cup final at St Brigid’s, Nerang on November 13. The team will be competing against teams from St Francis Xavier, St Kevin’s St Augustine’s and St Brigid’s. What Happening In Chiara This Term? Early Years and Junior Years students have commenced their regular weekly borrowing sessions enjoying some wonderful storytelling sessions from both the class teachers and the teacher-‐ librarians. Students in Year 5 will be undertaking research tasks related to their work on light and vision. Year 5 students will be working in the new Assisi LIFE virtual learning environment. Students in Year 3 are researching plants and animals using both print and online resources and later this term Year 1 students will be introduce to Olly, our online database for finding books in Chiara. Students in Year 2, 4 and 6 are learning how to use Oliver to search for books, make reservations and check their own borrowing information. Middle and Senior Years students are currently having sessions with the teacher-‐librarians on how to locate information, both in the library and through the wide range of online databases that the College subscribes to, for their assignments. Classes are also working with the teacher-‐librarians on how to write bibliographies; use in-‐text referencing and issues of copyright in the online world. iHelp Desk Technical assistance for students is available each day during Big Break in the Chiara iCentre. Problems with passwords; email; portal and Moodle access and general technical issues can be addressed one-‐on-‐one with a technician during this time. Page 5
