P – 12 Head -‐ Early and Junior Year’s Message
Dear Parents,
In the true spirit of Assisi, the weeks are only getting busier. While there are only six weeks left in
the school year, there’s plenty happening, so please keep ensuring you check all the sources of
information available.
Drive Carefully in the Car Park
Another timely reminder to please drive carefully in the College Car Park. From time to time,
accidents do happen, but obviously the best approach you can take is to drive slowly and be fully
aware of what is going on around you. With a car park that services 1300 kids, it is absolutely
essential that all students, and parents are kept as safe as possible.
Catalyst – Heron Island
As you would be aware, a group of very committed staff and students headed off to Heron Island
for our inaugural Project Catalyst experience. Going on the feedback from both students and staff
alike, this is set to become a very important tradition for students here at Assisi. Thank you to Mrs
Braithwaite, Miss Peebles and Mr Ellis for providing and experience that the students have
described as ‘life changing’ and ‘perfect’. In the same way that a catalyst in science causes or
assist a reaction, Project Catalyst seems to have very clearly done the same by fuelling a passion
for learning in the students who attended.
Going Digital 1:1 Information Session
Please make sure you take the time to attend our information session tonight from 6:00pm –
7:00pm for the 1:1 digital device program for Years 4-‐12. This will go a long way to answering
many of the questions you may have about the program.
International Staff Day
This Friday we celebrate International Staff Day at Assisi. It’s a great chance for us as a College to
acknowledge all Assisi staff for the wonderful job they do. We have never celebrated Teachers
Day, essentially because, as a staff we work as a team, and it is as a team that we provide the best
outcome for the students. Please take the time to thank a staff member on Friday for the work
that they do every day for our children.
P & F Race Day
I’m sure that anyone who attended the P &F Race Day on Saturday would agree that
it was an absolutely brilliant day. While it may not have been overly successful
financially for some of us, our sincere thanks to Tanya Malik and Di Ward for their
organisation of the day. Thanks also to Anne Arnold for her assistance with some great prizes on
the day.
Congratulations
Well done to our Years 4 -‐ 7 students who recently competed in the AB Paterson Public Speaking
Competition. Our student representation at this competition was the highest it has ever been.
Well done to all involved but especially to Lily Beechey, Italia Malik and Jasmine Rasmussen on
making it through to the next round of the competition. Very importantly, thank you to the
committed group of teachers who have worked so hard with these students in preparing them.
Thanks to Mr Mason, Mrs Portelli, Miss Spyer, Mrs Thorburn, Mrs Sleeth, Mrs Nelson and Miss
Rankine. Your efforts are hugely appreciated.
Congratulations also to four of our gymnasts who have been selected to attend the Women’s
Artistic Gymnastics National Club Championship in Geelong in November. Tayah Semple-‐Lewis will
be competing in the Level 4 Division, Natasha Jelacic and Kate Napier in Level 5 and Rachael
Armstrong in Level 8. Congratulations to all four young ladies and our best wishes go with you for
the championship.
Year 11 Leadership Speeches will soon be under way. This is an opportunity for any student in
Year 11 wanting to nominate for a Year 12 leadership position to explain their thoughts and
aspirations on school leadership as the upcoming senior leaders. What is most pleasing is that 25
Year 11 students have nominated to be considered for leadership. Congratulations and best
wishes to all students involved.
Next Week
Next Tuesday night we have the P & F AGM. If you only attend one P and F meeting all year,
please make it this one. We look forward to seeing as many people as possible.
As you would have seen in last week’s newsletter, next Wednesday night at 7:00pm our annual
Night of Excellence will take place in Perugia from 7:00pm. This is a great recognition for those
students in our community in Years 7 -‐ 12 who have excelled in many different areas. Again, we
look forward to a great crowd on the night.
leading the celebration and thanks also to Mr Cashman and Mr Littlejohn for helping the kids to
What Happening In Chiara This Term?
Early Years and Junior Years students have commenced their regular weekly borrowing sessions
enjoying some wonderful storytelling sessions from both the class teachers and the teacher-‐
librarians. Students in Year 5 will be undertaking research tasks related to their work on light and
vision. Year 5 students will be working in the new Assisi LIFE virtual learning environment.
Students in Year 3 are researching plants and animals using both print and online resources and
later this term Year 1 students will be introduce to Olly, our online database for finding books in
Chiara. Students in Year 2, 4 and 6 are learning how to use Oliver to search for books, make
reservations and check their own borrowing information.
Middle and Senior Years students are currently having sessions with the teacher-‐librarians on how
to locate information, both in the library and through the wide range of online databases that the
College subscribes to, for their assignments. Classes are also working with the teacher-‐librarians
on how to write bibliographies; use in-‐text referencing and issues of copyright in the online world.
iHelp Desk
Technical assistance for students is available each day during Big Break in the Chiara iCentre.
Problems with passwords; email; portal and Moodle access and general technical issues can be
From the Counsellors
The third newsletter article for this term by parenting expert Michael Grose titled “Give your
parenting a spring clean” is just fantastic. There are 10 excellent tips that you can check yourself
against, and maybe make some adjustments if you are falling into some of the unhealthy
parenting traps. This can be a simple audit around what’s happening in your family, be it doing
things for your children that they should be doing for themselves, racing in to school when your
child forgets their lunch, solving your child’s problem for them etc. etc. Don’t be a rescuer, be an
enabler! Allowing your child to make mistakes and deal with consequences is what develops
resilience. One of the best books I know and highly recommend is “7 Habits for Highly Effective
Families” by Stephen Covey. Parenting should be intentional, and not just a product of what you
unconsciously liked and didn’t like in your own life experience. The world is a very different place
to when we were parented, and we have to be much more alert and intentional around the
choices we make for our children. Hopefully this article will help to stimulate your thinking around
your own child-‐rearing practice.
Please continue connecting with either Susan or myself if there are any additional issues that may
be impacting on your child’s ability to learn at Assisi. Our best methods of contact are either by
phone or email (Susan ext 286; sbrown@assisis.qld.edu.au, Anne ext 285;
alambert@assisi.qld.edu.au).
Additionally, Michael Grose’s Parenting Ideas website offers a wealth of information. Please access
this using our annual subscription. Go to www.parentingideas.com.au. Use the School Members
login as Assisi, password is expert.
Norco Caps
Although this wonderful fundraiser is drawing to a close in 3 months time please continue to
collect the Norco caps with the 10 cent logo printed on the caps. The College has become the
proud owner of several shade tents over the years put to good use by our students at various
activities and carnivals. For our latest cap donations we received a cheque for $363.00. Please
continue to ask your friends, extended family, restaurant and coffee shop employees to collect the
caps. There is a Norco collection box located in Student Reception for depositing of the
caps. Thank you everyone for your fantastic support with this easy fundraiser.
News from OSHCare
Hello Everyone,
We have had another busy week with Robyn, Kerrie and Tim attending workshops and Robyn
attending an information session by Centacare to advise us of the changes within Centacare that
will be taking place as of November, so ‘watch this space!’
Page 11

Active After School Communities Program
Wow, our Circus presenter, Cathy, certainly has the kids very involved and all the children
have been happy to participate in her program on Wednesday afternoons from 4.15 -‐
5.15pm. 10-‐pin bowling with Jasmine is also well received by the children with
participation by most of them. These sessions are held at no extra cost to parents and if
your child attends on either of those days we would be grateful if they can stay until the
end of the AASC session -‐ 5.15pm -‐ as it is rather difficult for the provider to present a
program when a number of children drop out in the middle of a team game.
Christmas Closure
To ensure that everyone is aware of our Christmas closure time, we are again giving
advance warning of our closing time over the Christmas period. We close at 6.30pm on
Friday 21 December and re-‐open at 7am on Monday 7 January, 2013.
Toy Catalogues
Orders for our Christmas fund-‐raiser will be placed tomorrow, 26 October and sadly, we have only
2 orders. However, I am prepared to send a further order on 9 November which would be received
by 26 November, so if you are interested, please come and see Robyn or Kerrie. We have 3
different toy catalogues available for parents and you don’t have to be an OSHCare parent to take
advantage of this offer, so please feel free to come and take some. There are some great
Christmas ideas at reasonable prices.
Before School Care
Thank you so much to the parents who have responded to my request for children to be booked
into Before School Care, rather than just turn up. As I informed parents last week, I have been
quite happy to allow children to arrive at OSHC in the mornings without a booking having been
made. Due to the increasing numbers of children both with a booking or just turning up however, I
need to discourage this practice as again, on Monday morning we had 39 children with a booking
but ended up with a total of 60 children!!! As it was stated last week, this could certainly cause a
problem with our ratios had Robyn been unavailable to join the staff 'on the floor'. I would
therefore ask that if you do not have a permanent booking for BSC, please phone OSHCare prior to
sending your child/ren.
Parents needing care for children according to their rostered work days are welcome to phone
when their rosters are available and make their bookings then.
Absences
Please be aware that OSHCare needs to be informed if a child is going to be absent. I understand
that some parents think that school automatically informs OSHC of a child's absence but that is
not the practice, the onus is on parents to inform OSHCare as well as informing school. Phone
5580 5648. Thanks.
Christmas Vacation Care
I know this seems a long way off, but we need to do our planning so that the program can be
available for parents by 12 November. We will be inviting input from parents and children over
the next couple of weeks as to the type of activities we will be offering and the cost involved. We
are very conscious of the fact that Christmas can be an expensive time for families and although
Page 12

we want to be able to offer a variety of incursions and excursions, we are very conscious of the
cost involved in many of them – bus transport in particular!
As always we wish you all a safe and happy week.
God bless,
Give your parenting a spring clean
With spring in the air there is no better time for a little parenting spring clean to make sure you are on track
to raise happy, confident and resilient kids.
Every parent I know wants be the best parent they can be. Yet
despite the best intentions it’s easy develop poor parenting habits
that don’t do our kids any favours.
With spring in the air there is no better time for a little parenting
spring clean to make sure you are on track to raise happy,
confident and resilient kids.
Here is a checklist of 10 parenting ideas designed to help you
put some psychological muscle on your kids:
1. Encourage effort and improvement more than results:
Descriptive praise is better than generalities. Better still, as kids
get older focus your comments more on effort, improvement and
contribution than on results. And don’t make your kids reliant on
what you think about them as their source of self-esteem.
2. Get kids to help without being paid: A little payment for jobs is
okay, but don’t go overboard. Teach kids what’s in it for ‘we’ not
‘me’. By the way, the use of rosters is a great way to get kids to
help.
3. Balance free time with organised time: For learning reasons
(kids learn a lot when play and activities are self-directed) and mental
health reasons make sure kids have plenty of MOOCH time.
4. NO deals with kids: If you bribe kids to behave well you teach
them that they get what they negotiate. That’s hard work in family
life. Better to give them a treat after they’ve behaved well as a
show of appreciation rather than make their good behaviour
contingent on a reward, also known as bribery.
5. Train your kids to speak for themselves: Give your kids the
words they need to speak for themselves in all situations including
when they are not with you.
6. When kids can, they do (make lunches, get themselves up, etc):
Sometimes we do things for kids that make us feel like a mum or a
dad. Your job is to make yourself redundant as a parent so teach
your kids to do/make/speak for themselves and work your way out
of a job. NB: You will never become redundant as a mum or a dad.
7. Don’t give them things just because they ask: Character is built
through impulse control. Resist giving them what they want even if
you have the capacity to do so. Waiting, saving and goal-setting are
admirable skills that are developed through scarcity.
8. Give kids a chance to sort out their fights and squabbles: The
default mechanism for most sibling conflict is compromise. We’ve
just got to give kids a chance to work things out themselves. There
are legitimate times to get involved but we need to know what we
are doing and why.
9. Use consequences to develop responsibility: Don’t rescue kids
when they leave that school lunch at home, when they are late for
school or they are less than pleasant to another child. Allow
consequences to teach your kids the important lessons of life. You
mess up sometimes but you can make up and/or move on – and
you can learn from the experience.
10. Put the camera down – be in the moment: Make sure your
mind is where your body is and be fully present when you are with
your kids. Take more mental pictures than photos and build their
family memories.
This checklist is designed to stimulate some thinking and
conversation about your current child-rearing practice. It’s not
intended as a template for good parenting. It may even stimulate
you to do less of some things and more of others. Incremental
change is how we become better at most endeavours, including
raising children.
