The Norwegian Fjords in Mid Summer
A journey to the Land of the Midnight Sun
13th to 25th July 2012
A Norwegian coastal voyage offers the traveller scenery on
an epic scale, together with a wonderful feeling of peace and
tranquility. It is difficult to imagine a more relaxing setting
than coastal Norway. The immense size of the fjords and the
timeless quality of scenes that have changed little in the past
centuries create a unique atmosphere that can be particularly
enjoyed from the comfort of the MS Caledonian Sky.
Our journey begins in the
Arctic Circle at Tromso and
from here we cruise south to
experience the wildlife in Andenes and
spend time exploring the narrow and
deep sided Trollfjorden. We continue
to the Lofoten Islands, with their
many small fishing villages amongst
a backdrop of mountainous scenery
that often experiences snowfall even in
the summer. Our journey then takes us
across the Arctic Circle and along the
fjord indented coastline. Words cannot
describe the awe-inspiring scenery
as we take in views of mountains,
glaciers, waterfalls, valleys and truly
dramatic fjords. Amongst them,
Naerofjorden has been included on
UNESCO’s World Heritage List.
A highlight for many will be the
journey on the Flâm Railway, one of
the most beautiful railway lines in
the world. The train journey provides
us with views of some of Norway’s
wildest and most magnificent scenery
with rivers cutting through deep
ravines, cascading waterfalls, snowcapped
mountains and mountain
farms clinging to sheer slopes.
Such a journey can of course only be
undertaken by a special vessel with
the self-sufficient qualities of the MS
Caledonian Sky. With our Zodiacs
we shall be able to take advantage
of wildlife sightings and weather
conditions and explore areas that the
bigger ships cannot reach.
Although this cruise is not classified
as expeditionary, on some days it
will be necessary to use the Zodiac
landing craft to access remote ports
and land ashore.
The Itinerary
Day 1 - London or Manchester to
Tromso. Fly by scheduled flight via
Oslo. On arrival transfer to the MS
Caledonian Sky and sail this evening.
Day 2 - Andenes & Trollfjorden. Arrive
this morning at the town of Andenes
where we will use our vessel to search
for whales. There is an excellent chance
for us to see sperm whales and also
minke whales and orcas. This afternoon
we are at sea enjoying the coastal
scenery before arriving into Trollfjorden
this evening. We hope to enjoy a
barbeque on deck as we sail through
the beautiful, narrow and steep sided
Trollfjorden enjoying the birdlife,
waterfalls and dramatic scenery.

Day 3 - Lofoton Islands. This
morning we arrive in the Lofoten
Archipelago, an enchanting area
of picturesque villages with jagged
granite mountain peaks forming a
dramatic backdrop. We will disembark
in the small fishing village of Aa where
we will visit the local museum before
continuing to the nearby village
of Reine. Our next stop will be the
village of Sund where we will visit the
blacksmith famous for their forged
cormorants. We continue to the Viking
centre at Borg where we enjoy a local
lunch before continuing to Kabelva
to visit the Lofoton museum and Kare
Espolin Johnson gallery, a nationally
recognised artist who took his
inspiration from his life and the nature

of the area. Our day ends in Svolvaer
where the ship will have sailed to
meet us.
Day 4 - Torghatten & Bronnoysund.
Morning cruising. During lunch we
will sail through Bronnoysund before
Mt Torghatten comes into view, one
of the most famous landmarks on the
Norwegian coast. A fairly strenuous
optional walk will take you to the
‘hole’ in the mountain which has been
eroded by the sea.
Day 5 - Trondheim. We arrive into
Trondheim this morning and have
a full day to explore. We will visit
Munkholmen (Monk’s Island) situated
in Trondheim harbour, with a fort which
