Eagles Achieve National Ranking<br />

It was a banner year for the 2008 club as they posted<br />

a program-best 32-11 record. And others around<br />

the country took notice. D3baseball.com ranked<br />

the Eagles as high as #14 in their national poll at<br />

one point during the season. Ozarks began receiving<br />

votes in early March and eventually cracked the<br />

top-25 March 10. At that point, the Eagles were off<br />

to a program-best 16-2 start. Ozarks stayed ranked<br />

for the majority of the season and finished #28 in the<br />

poll. It was the first time in school history the baseball<br />

program had been ranked.<br />

Finnell Earns Academic All-America Honor<br />

Designated hitter Robby Finnell was named to the<br />

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America First Team.<br />

Finnell, a senior in 2008, also received All-District<br />

First Team honors, making him eligible for the national<br />

team. He is the first Ozarks’ athlete to receive<br />

national First Team Academic All-America honors. He<br />

was named to the Academic All-District All-America<br />

team in 2006, 2007 and 2008. He finished his<br />

career with a 3.55 grade point average as a political<br />

science major. It was the third major honor Finnell<br />

received during his final year. He was named to the<br />

D3baseball.com All-America Second Team and ABCA/<br />

Rawlings All-West Region Second Team. In 2008, the<br />

6-foot-1, 210-pound Tulsa, Okla., product hit .374 with<br />

13 homers, 12 doubles, 56 RBI while owning a .784<br />

slugging percentage. He finished the 2008 season<br />

with 109 total bases and a .486 on-base percentage.<br />

The right-handed slugger ranked 19th in NCAA<br />

III in home runs and 27th in slugging percentage.<br />

He ranked in the top ten in the American Southwest<br />

Conference in six offensive categories. He is the<br />

career leader at Ozarks in home runs (31), RBI (159),<br />

games played (162), runs (131), hits (189), doubles<br />

(31), triples (8), total bases (329), walks (73) and hit<br />

by pitch (42). He owns a .348 career batting average,<br />

tenth-best at Ozarks and a .606 career slugging<br />

percentage, fourth-best at Ozarks.<br />

Briggs Named All-American<br />

Shortstop Cory Briggs capped an impressive sophomore<br />

campaign by being named to the American<br />

Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA III<br />

All-America Second Team. Briggs becomes the first<br />

Ozarks’ player to ever earn All-America honors from<br />

the ABCA. He received All-West Region First Team<br />

from the organization prior to his All-America selection.<br />

The 6-foot, 200-pound Greencastle, Pa., product<br />

was among the top hitters in NCAA III, finishing in the<br />

top-30 in five major categories, including hits (79 -<br />

11th), batting (.467 - 15th), total bases (124 - 19th),<br />

doubles (19 - 24th) and runs (56 - 30th). He won the<br />

regular season American Southwest Conference batting<br />

title and ranked in the top ten in the ASC in eight<br />

offensive categories. He was second in hits, third in<br />

doubles and on-base percentage (.513), fifth in runs,<br />

sixth in RBI (54) and total bases, and seventh in slugging<br />

percentage (.734). His average, hit, total bases<br />

and doubles totals are new single-season school<br />

records. He was especially strong in Ozarks 18 conference<br />

games, averaging nearly two hits (1.9) and two<br />

RBI (1.6) per game. He was voted to the ASC All-East<br />

Division First Team.<br />

RHP Curt Dixon<br />

Curt Dixon Signs With Sioux City Explorers<br />

Right-handed pitcher Curt Dixon signed a professional<br />

contract with the Sioux City (IA) Explorers<br />

following his senior season. Dixon was later traded<br />

to the Southern Illinois Miners of the Frontier League<br />

and then signed with the McKinney Blue Thunder<br />

of the Continental League and finished his first pro<br />

season there in grand fashion. The hard-throwing<br />

Dixon finished with a 1.16 ERA in 23.1 innings of<br />

work. Dixon was named the Louisville Slugger National<br />

Player of the Week by Collegiate Baseball after<br />

tying a conference record with 14 K’s in a game. The<br />

6-foot-5, 215-pound McAlester, Okla., product didn’t<br />

stop there as he finished with a 2.92 ERA and a<br />

school-record 9-1 record. He was named to the ABCA<br />

All-Region Team and All-Conference Team in 2008.<br />

Junior center fielder <strong>Bruce</strong> <strong>Cameron</strong> and senior<br />

designated hitter Robby Finnell were named to the<br />

Both were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-West<br />

Region Second Team, and each were selected to the<br />

ASC All-East Division First Team. <strong>Cameron</strong>, a 6-foot,<br />

175-pound native of Houston, Texas, hit .410 with 14<br />

homers and 49 RBI. He ranked 11th in NCAA III in<br />

homers and 10th in slugging percentage (.857). His<br />

batting average, slugging percentage, home run, onbase<br />

percentage (.500), total bases (115) and RBI<br />

totals were among the top ten in the ASC. He also<br />

saw time on the mound, finishing with a 5-1 record in<br />

48.1 innings of work. Finnell, a 6-foot-1, 210-pound<br />

native of Tulsa, Okla., hit .374 with 13 homers and<br />

Four players were named to the American Baseball<br />

Conference East Division All-Conference honors<br />

in 2008. Shortstop Cory Briggs earned All-West First<br />

Team honors while outfielder <strong>Bruce</strong> <strong>Cameron</strong> and<br />

designated hitter Robby Finnell made the All-West<br />

Second Team. Pitcher Curt Dixon was voted to the All-<br />

West Third Team. Briggs, catcher Scott Dietz, Finnell<br />

and <strong>Cameron</strong> all received ASC All-East Division First<br />

Team. First baseman Robert Mummey, third baseman<br />

Brad Broussard, pitcher <strong>John</strong> <strong>Scheuring</strong> and<br />

<strong>Cameron</strong> (utility player) made All-East Division Second<br />

Team. Right fielder <strong>David</strong> <strong>Smith</strong>, Dixon, pitcher<br />

<strong>Todd</strong> Koch and <strong>Cameron</strong> (pitcher) made the All-East<br />

Honorable Mention Team.<br />

<strong>David</strong> <strong>Smith</strong> Wins Gold Glove<br />

Junior right fielder <strong>David</strong> <strong>Smith</strong> earned an American<br />

Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-West Region<br />

gold glove award. The 5-foot-8, 160-pound Rowlett,<br />

Texas, product finished the season with a perfect<br />

1.000 fielding percentage from his outfield position.<br />

<strong>Smith</strong> started in 41 games and had 93 putouts and<br />

2 assists during the 2008 season. He becomes the<br />

first Ozarks’ player to ever receive the award.
