Roads and Bridges (State Sector)<br />
14.1 Roads are an essential<br />
ingredient <strong>of</strong> infrastructure <strong>of</strong><br />
economy. In the absence <strong>of</strong> any<br />
other suitable and viable modes <strong>of</strong><br />
transportation like railways and<br />
waterways, roads play a vital role in<br />
boosting the economy <strong>of</strong> the hilly<br />
state like Himachal Pradesh. Starting<br />
almost from a scratch the state<br />
<strong>Government</strong> has constructed 34,000<br />
Kms. <strong>of</strong> motorable roads inclusive <strong>of</strong><br />
jeepable and track till December,<br />
<strong>2011</strong>. <strong>Government</strong> has been assigning a<br />
very high priority to road sector. For<br />
the year <strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong>, there is an outlay <strong>of</strong><br />
` 657.02 crore. The target fixed for<br />
<strong>2011</strong>-<strong>12</strong> and achievements made upto<br />
December, <strong>2011</strong> are given as under:-<br />

National Highways (Central Sector)<br />
14.3 The process <strong>of</strong><br />
improvement <strong>of</strong> National Highways in<br />
the state having total length <strong>of</strong> 1,458<br />
Km, which include urban links and byepasses,<br />
continued during the year also.<br />
Upto the end <strong>of</strong> December, <strong>2011</strong>,<br />
expenditure <strong>of</strong> `100.40 crore has been<br />
incurred.<br />
Railways<br />
14.4 There are only two<br />
narrow gauge railway lines connecting<br />
Shimla with Kalka (96 Km.) and<br />
Jogindernagar with Pathankot (113<br />
Km.) and one 33 Km. broad gauge<br />
railway line from Nangal Dam to<br />
Charuru (District Una).
