the control line. If selection signals were
transmitted down the coax, the same box
could include the dc power injection/interruption
tasks as well as shorting to earth
ground the receiver antenna ports when
transmitting. One should be able to create
such a box of a smaller volume than two
RCS-10 control boxes.
LED indicators identifying the selected
switch position can speed acceptance
testing and troubleshooting in the fi eld.
Use bright LEDs to enhance visibility on
sunny days. Additionally, include a pair of
test points for quick fi eld checks of voltage
delivered to the box.
An operator selection box with a circle
of illuminated push-buttons would permit
quick comparison of short and long-path (or
any other two non-adjacent choices). Two
such circles of buttons would allow control

of antennas for both receivers; this should
include a “slave” button to allow both receivers
to use the same antenna selection.

Notch fi lter
Chassis-mount F connectors often loosen
up when tightening a cable. Opening the
box to tighten the connector nut and lock
washer takes time and breaks any weatherproof
seals. Board-mounted F connectors
don’t suffer from this shortcoming.

worked well for our DXpedition. In a typical
contest station the notch needs to be
adjusted to track the transmitter around the
band, and George’s fi lter design certainly
permits such adjustments. We haven’t
tried doing this in real time, however.
Notes
1 In contrast, other band-pass fi lter designs such
as those by W3NQN have very low stop-band
impedances. When paralleled, the low stopband
impedance of one band’s fi lter short
circuits the desired frequencies for the input
of the other band — and vice versa.
2 Shorting one output of the band-pass fi lter
splitter might also increase somewhat
the attenuation of the other output(s),
an undesirable result in this application.
This observation is speculative, as the
condition was not tested when measuring
the performance of the fi lter splitter.
