For use at home or in the office: 

GEV’s motion detectors offer maximum security at minimum 

expense. When connected to lighting elements, detectors 

can show the way at dusk or remove the cover of darkness 

for intruders. 

Virtually nothing can escape GEV’s motion detectors as they 

operate using „passive infrared technology“. This means 

that they react automatically to any moving heat source 

within their field of detection. The monitored area and ON 

switching times can be set individually for each device. This 

increases security while also helping to save energy.

1. ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT PROTECTION CLASSES 

Electrical consumers such as lights, heating appliances, domestic devices with electric motor drives, power tools, medical 

electrical devices are divided into 4 protection classes. 

PROTECTION CLASS 0 DEVICES 

These devices only have basic insulation and have no protective earth connection. This type of device is not authorised in 

Germany. 

PROTECTION CLASS I DEVICES 

These devices have basic insulation and a protective earth connection, symbol . 

PROTECTION CLASS II DEVICES 

These devices have double or reinforced insulation in addition to basic insulation and used to be identified as having "protective 

insulation". With the entry into force of VDE 0100 part 410 of January 1997, the "Protective insulation" description was 

replaced by "Protection through use of Class II electrical equipment or equivalent insulation". However, as the old description 

is shorter, it is still used in technical circles. Protection Class II's double or reinforced insulation also ensures protection in 

case of indirect contact if the basic insulation becomes damaged. Devices in this class must not contain a protective earth 

connection, symbol . 

PROTECTION CLASS III DEVICES 

These are devices are designed to be connected to SELV ( separated/safety extra low voltage) power sources, i.e. to a nominal 

voltage of up to AC 50 V or DC 120 V, symbol . Protection Class III devices should not be equipped with ground conductor 

connection points. 

2. PROTECTION TYPES - PROTECTION AGAINST CONTACT AND THE INSTRUSION OF SOLID OBJECTS AND 

WATER (IP CODE) 

The protection of electrical equipment against contact and the intrusion of solid objects and water is ensured by the protection 

type and indicated by an alphanumerical identification sytem or IP code. Since VDE 0470 part 1 of November 1992 (identical 

to EN 60 529) came into force, the IP code consists of the letters IP (International Protection Rating) and two code digits. 

For example: IP 23 

Meaning: • The first code digit specifies protection against the intrusion of solid objects 

• The second code digit specifies protection against the intrusion of water with adverse effects 

PROTECTION FROM CONTACT AND THE INTRUSION OF SOLID OBJECTS 

The first code digit specifies the protection against access to dangerous parts and against intrusion of solid objects: 

First code digit Explanation 

0 No protection. No prevention of intrusion of solid objects. 

1 Intrusion of solid objects above 50 mm in diameter is prevented. 

This also means protection against contact with the back of the hand. 

2 Intrusion of solid objects above 12.5 mm in diameter is prevented. 

This also means protection against contact with the fingers. 

3 Intrusion of solid objects above 2.5 mm in diameter is prevented. 

This also means protection against contact with tools. 

4 Intrusion of solid objects above 1 mm in diameter is prevented. 

This also means protection against contact with tools, wires, etc. 

5 The penetration of dust is not completely prevented but it can only penetrate into non-dangerous areas.

6 The penetration of dust is completely prevented. Complete protection against contact. 

PROTECTION AGAINST WATER 

The second code digit specifies protection against damaging intrusion of water:

0 No protection against water. 

1 Protection against vertically falling drops. 

2 Protection against diagonally (15° to the vertical) falling drops. 

3 Protection against sprayed water (water sprayed at up to 60° to the vertical). 

4 Protection against water splashed from all directions 

5 Protection against water jets (from a hose sprayed in all directions). 

6 Protection against power water jets. 

7 Protection against temporary immersion in water (the elecrical equipment is immersed in water under 

standard conditions of pressure and time). 

8 Protection against permanent immersion (the electrical equipment is permanently immersed in water under 

a stipulated pressure).

SWITCHING AND INSTALLATION DEVICES AND LIGHTS 

Switching devices are listed with many different protection types so that it is always possible to find the suitable type of 

protection. 

The preferred protection types for installation devices are IP 00, IP 30, IP 31, IP 54 and IP 68. 

The preferred protection types for lights are IP 23, IP 44, IP 55 and IP 65 

In the past, instead of IP protection codes according to VDE 0470 part 1: 1992-11, drop and grid symbols were used to 

indicate the protection type for installation equipment and devices for domestic use or similar nature. The table below shows 

examples of terminology which is not uniform in all professional circles.
