4.5.8 Fli ght in rain<br />

Revision<br />

When flying the "Duo Discus" with a wet surface or<br />

in rain, the size of the water drops adhering to<br />

the wing causes a deterioration of its flight<br />

performance which cannot be expressed in numerical<br />

values due to the difficulties involved with such<br />

measurements. Often the air mass containing the<br />

moisture is also descending so that compared<br />

with a wet sailplane in calm air the sink<br />

rates encountered are higher.<br />

Flight tests in rain, conducted by the manufacturer,<br />

did not reveal any significant differences in the<br />

stalling behaviour or stalling speeds.<br />

It cannot be excluded, however, that excessive<br />

alterations of the airfoil (as caused by snow,<br />

ice or heavy rain) result in higher minimum<br />

speeds.<br />
